Welcome to Slot-GP
This
software is developed for the Scalextric Sport Digital system. This program could not have been possible
without the great help
of several friends on the SlotForum, with a special thanks to RichG for deciphering the binary data that the SCX console
sends out.
This
program does not need you to set anything up on your SCX console except to set
the car IDs the way you want to race them.
You
should leave the console on GPR mode, but there is no need to set laps, start
or stop on the console itself. This is
all handled
by the Slot-GP program.
This
software is freeware for your personal use. You may re-distribute this package so long as
you include the entire package including its
Copyright. You may
not re-distribute this for commercial purposes. Please do not decompile or otherwise reverse
engineer this software.
If
you would like access to the code for this, please contact me at
www.SlotForum.com – nickname Rubenio.
In
order to use this software, you will need a cable to connect your Sport Digital
Console to an available serial port on your PC.
If you
don't have such a cable, check out this link for how to obtain one (Many
Thanks to RichG for his great support!). This link below will take
you to a lot of useful info to get you started if you're new to SCX
digital.

The installer
package for Slot-GP has been moved and can now be found at the page below.

Once
you have your system connected, you will see the Race Setup window similar to
below (except that the first time, you will have no
data for drivers' & cars' names).
This window allows to pick how many drivers are
in the race and what cars they will be driving.
It should
be self explanatory once you have the drivers in the system. In order to do this, I will walk you through
the process of adding/editing drivers,
cars & track layouts, which is all you will need to get racing!
First,
click on the 'Edit Drivers' button.

That
will bring up this window which will allow you to manage your drivers. Simply type a name in the box next to Driver
Name and
click the add button. That will
populate the list of available drivers at the top. If you want to delete a driver (just in
case?), you can
select a name in the available drivers window and click the delete
button. That's all there is to it!

Editing
the cars names is just as simple and the window looks exactly alike. Notice that when you select a car, it turns
blue showing
you which car you could delete.

By
now, you can probably guess what the 'Edit Layouts' window will look like, but
in this case there is a little more info we need in order
to get started. You can add/delete layouts as
simply as you can drivers & cars, but you will need to add the track lenghts for each track
(it calculates the average since you can lane change in
Digital!!). Also you need to supply a
breakout time. This is a minimum lap
time
required to get around the circuit and faster times will be ignored
by the system. This is useful in case
you misplace the car for example
right across the start finish line...
Oh,
be careful with the delete option here!!
Records are saved in a file associated with each layout so if you erase
the layout you will lose
the records for it as well...

OK,
so now you have your drivers, cars and layouts in the system... Hopefully that didn't take you more than 5
minutes... (then again if
you have hundreds of cars, well that could take a while... I'll see if a car import function can be done
for a later release -
assuming there's
interest ;-)
So
now we're back to the Race Setup window.
Select the number of drivers you want by
checking the 'enable' box over each driver you
want to include in your race. Make
sure you chose their names and cars in the popop boxes
for each 'driver number'. Set the number
of
laps your race will be and the number of minutes of Free Practice (FP) that
you would like. If you like this setup
and want it to be your default
when you start up the program, just click on the 'Save Race Profile' under
the File Menu. In the example below,
there will be 3 racers in the
event (my 2 kids and I). Now, clicking
on the FP, Qualify or Race buttons will take you to the race screen, but before
you do this, read on
because you have a couple of choices here...

There
are two race displays that I have developed for this program You can select which view you prefer
and the system will remember
it for next time. Do this under the Options menu by selecting the view you
want with the mouse.
The
first display is a 'Quali-Screen' (shown below) which
is driver based and shows you info on how you are performing lap by lap. If you
have driven this car on this track layout before, the system will show you
your personal best time as well as the record lap time and who
set it. You can use this view for
Free Practice, Qualifying or even Race Mode.
This
is the Quali-Screen view for a qualifying session of
5 laps. The FP & Race views look the
same so I won't paste them here.

The
2nd race display is illustrated below.
This will place the drivers in running order depending on the race mode
you are in. For the FP
and Qualifying modes, the drivers are listed by their best lap times. The window knows how many drivers you are
having in your race and
adjusts its size accordingly so you don't waste your time finding
the info you want. Once the session is
over, you will be taken to a results
display where you will have a choice to return to race setup or to
the next session.. ( in the order FP, Qualifying, Race
obviously ;-). At the
bottom left of the display, you can also see a small throttles
object which will show you in real time what your doing with the throttle. This
is useful to check that your controller/car is responding... I am thinking of collecting this throttle
data to show the driver their theoretical best
lap... I also think it would be cool
to use this data to have the computer learn to drive a car itself (but that's
another project!!)
Here
is a sample display with 4 drivers, notice that Dagmar chose to be driver #5
(with SCX car number 5 on track).

Once
your session is finished, you will get to the Results display, as shown
below. Depending on the session type you
will see who
practiced best, the qualification order or the race results. From here you can also chose to race again -
which takes you to the Race
Setup display.

Well,
that's it!! I hope you like this
program, if you do, please drop me a line at the SlotForum!
