2. Genealogical Dictionary
of Rhode Island p.143 - Nicholas Brown b. ___, d. 1694; m/1: ___; m/2:
Frances Parker, widow of George Parker. Frances d. after 1669.
I. Nicholas Brown, 1684 - he, of New Jersey, testified that he was the
deceased Bartholomew West's nearest relation; in a suit when Catherine
Brown, sister of Christopher Almy, also testified. Perhaps Catherine was
his wife.
3. A History of Monmouth
and Ocean Counties, New Jersey by Edwin Salter 1890, p.xiii - BROWN - Nicholas
brown of Rhode Island was among the original purchasers of land in Monmouth
1667; Abraham Brown and Nicholas were among the first settlers, and took
the oath of allegiance in Middletown 1668. He d. 1694 and left
will. His children were Nicholas, Abraham, Jane and William.
The first two are supposed to be the ones named among first settlers of
Monmouth. Nicholas Brown m. Katherine Almy Wst, widow of Bartholomew
West, about 1673 or '4. It seems possible that he was twice
married, as one Nicholas Brown, an extensive land owner, m. Mary, dau.
of John Chambers; she was b. about 1675......
4. New Jersey Colonial
Documents - East Jersey Deeds, etc., Liber No. 3, Reversed Side: - 1675.
___ Browne, widow of Bartholomew West of Shrewsbury, 180a. Her sons Stephen
and William and dau. Adry West each 60a. Nicholas Browne of Shrewsbury
an wife, 210a.
5. New England Colonial
Families - Vol. 1 by Carl Boyer 3rd 1981 (nothing that hasn't been covered
above)
Note: William Almy b. 1601, d. 1676 Portsmouth,
RI had - among his children - a Catharine Almy who m. Bartholomew West.
Another of William Almy's children was Christopher Almy who m. Elizabeth
Cornell. Nicholas Brown above stated he was Bartholomew West's
nearest relation in 1684. It would appear that if he WAS Bartholomew West's
nearest relation in 1684, Bartholomew was still living at the time and
this would rule out Catherine Almy as having married Nicholas Brown.
