Maryland Artist
In Education Proposal
The
purpose for this residency is to introduce the students to weaving
using several different weaving techniques and many different
materials. The students will all construct their own loom,
learn the basics of warping and weaving, and learn how sketches and
cartoons can assist a weaver in the design of an
artwork.
The project will span 20 days. The artist will
supervise the project. Students will be expected to weave two
pieces during the course of the residency. This residency
works well with children from 4th grade to High School. The
programs are designed to take place under a normal class structure
taking anywhere from one hour to 90 minutes.
Residency
Description: Under the artists Supervision, students will
build and decorate their own small tapestry looms. They will
learn how to use these looms by practicing several basic weaving
techniques such as; warping, basic weave, sumac weave, shag weave,
and spiral sumac. Each student will end the residency with one
alternative tapestry, one rag rug sampler, and one rag rug
tapestry. The weaver will assist the regular art teacher by
supplying some alternative material (although student participation
is encouraged), demonstrations, sample work, sketches, and one on
one instruction. On the final day of the residency, the students
will have a review dealing with issues of design and
craftsmanship. This type of forum will encourage critical thinking
and emphasize experiences through problem solving.
