[In this issue I am listing some Internet ftp, gopher, and wide
world web sites. They are in no particular order. Not all sites
have specific info relevant to this newsletter but will probably
interest readers, most have at least some connection to the
Russian aerospace field. In some cases I have summarized the
materials available but in most cases I reproduce an edited list
of selections available on the sites themselves.]

Robotic Planetary Exploration

The McDonnell Douglas Aerospace - Huntington Beach Robotic
Planetary Exploration program strives to develop new and enhance
existing technologies for application toward the robotic
exploration of other worlds. Since the fall of 1992, MDA has been
involved primarily in the cooperative development of a Mars rover,
the Marsokhod, with the Russian Space Agency.

Over the last two years, great strides have been made towards
designing a robotic rover capable of operating remotely on Mars
for upto two years. In addition, during the past year, MDA has
begun a cooperative development program, named Pele, with several
university and NASA partners to modify the original Russian
Marsokhod vehicle for use as a robotic explorer on the Moon's
surface.

There are several options from which to chose:

[Mir 2-Line orbital elements are easily available from this
server.]

The file master.dir in this directory is a complete listing of the
space-related programs, data, and documentation available for
download from the Celestial BBS, 205/*409-9280*, which operates at
300/1200/2400/4800/9600 bps, 24 hours/day. Due to the extensive
nature of these files, it is impossible for me to maintain two
sources, with the exception of the weekly postings of two-line
element sets (tle.*) and these key programs:

  * spacetrk.zip (LaTeX documentation and FORTRAN source code for
the NORAD orbital models needed for using the two-line element
sets), * sat-db13.zip (a complete database of all payloads
launched into orbit), * sgp4-pl2.zip (a library of Turbo Pascal
units to implement SGP4/SDP4), * trakstr2.zip (an implementation
of sgp4-pl2 to output satellite ECI position, subpoint, look
angles, and right ascension/declination), * passupdt.zip (a
package for quickly and easily updating two-line element sets),
and * unzip (a Sun executable for unzipping these programs).

More information on the first five files is available in the file
master.dir.

There is no access charge for using the Celestial BBS and the file
master.dir should serve to give you a pretty good idea of the
value of the material available there.

The Space Report ("JSR") is issued about once a week. It
describes all space launches, including both piloted missions and
automated satellites. Back issues are available by FTP from sao-

years 1990 through 1994 and International Aerospace Abstracts

***** Wanted/Questions/Corrections *****
- Anyone interested in attending an informal meeting of
Soviet/Russian space researchers at the launch of the shuttle Mir
docking mission in June 1995 please contact Dennis Newkirk at the
address below. My preference is to keep this to an informal
meeting for a few hours the morning after the night launch at a
nearby hotel, preferably one with a good restaurant. A date will
not be set, this only applies to the actual launch day regardless
of any delays. Several of you have already contacted me. I will
send out details of the meeting a month before the launch.
Contact the Guide (see below)

***** Contributions *****

The objective of the Guide is to put professional and amateur
Russian aerospace researchers and writers in touch with each other
and the wide array of atypical information sources available about
past and present events. As researchers uncover sources they can
make the source known to the rest of the community and are
credited with providing the info. If you find a good book, or an
article about Russian aerospace outside the main stream US space
press (Space News, Aviation Week, Final Frontier, Air & Space,
etc.) write up a brief description of the item and send it to the
Guide. If you are looking for specific information send in your
questions to be listed to other researchers. Please include
contact information, if specified the contact info will be
withheld.
Please send news releases, abstracts of articles, new or
noteworthy old book reviews, interviews, conference reports, news
and other information related to the study of USSR and Russian
aerospace and related cold war, military and political events you
wish to be listed to:
