Nest Boxes

3-9-09

This morning RWBC members Don, Bill, Roger and Harold re-installed the Purple Martin boxes at Greenway Farm. Once again, as they did last year, a pair of Purple Martins arrived as boxes were being installed; they circled several times, then lit on a box. Anyone that wants a close up look at Purple Martins should check them out, they will stay perched as you walk within 10 steps of the boxes. Later this week we will re-install the Tree Swallow boxes below the dam.

1-23-09

Don, Harold, Bill, and Roger installed 12 Bluebird and 3 Woodduck boxes at Standifer Gap Marsh. Church members will monitor the Bluebird boxes. Bluebird boxes are Don's latest design with better rain protection and easier side opening for clean-out. Most boxes are mounted on light poles along side the road that loops around the church. One Woodduck box is located at the pond on the left of the site entrance, one along the edge of the main marsh, and one near the gate on the gravel road.

2006 - 2008

Don, Harold, and Roger have built and installed 67 Bluebird boxes along the Riverwalk, the new Renaissance Park, and at Greenway Farm. Boxes were built by Don in his home work-shop. Cedar lumber left-over from fence construction, and steel posts were scrounged by Harold, stored in a shed at the Greenway Farm, and used as required. Most boxes are mounted on steel posts and some on existing structures, trees, poles, etc. Locations for the boxes were chosen so as not to hamper park mowers or maintenance personnel.

A Woodduck box was also built and placed at Amnicola Marsh, and Martin "Condos" were built and placed at Greenway Farm near the old barn.
