DETAILED
DESCRIPTION:
The cottage has two separate living areas:
1) the "old" (1949) part of the house is a private master suite,
containing a living
room with fireplace for nippy nights, bedroom and private
bath. Bedroom has one double, one twin bed (to be changed to one queen bed for summer 2009).

The "new" (1976) part has a large room containing a living
area with sofa and chairs, TV, digital piano, and wood-burning stove,

plus a kitchen area and a dining table that seats up to 8:

From the dining table you have a nice view across the garden to the
historic Josiah Coffin house:

Upstairs in the new part of the house are two bedrooms, one with
a queen size bed and the other with two twin beds, plus a bath:
Our Cottage has a washer/dryer, fully equipped kitchen, cable TV, DVD and VCR player, digital piano,
plus
wireless internet. There is lots of original artwork on the
walls
by well-known artists from Nantucket and off-island. We
have many books good for summer "escape" reading, or for learning
about
Nantucket. There is a good collection of puzzles and games.
Outside the cottage we have a separate bunkhouse, known as the
"Dividend", which has two twin beds, plus a bath with
shower.
This is a somewhat spartan, but great for kids.
Attached to the Dividend is an outside shower, great for
getting the salt off after swimming.
Cottage
grounds:
Our Cottage is located
way back from Cliff
Road, on land adjacent to the 1724 "Josiah Coffin House"
illustrated above. Our cottage is completely invisible from
the
street, and far from any traffic noise. There is
room at
the end of the driveway for parking up to two cars. The
completely fenced-in yard provides privacy and safety for small
children. A pleasant garden lies between the Cottage and the Josiah
Coffin House to the north (see photo above), and on the south side
there is a brick patio
with charcoal grill and picnic table. Across the lawn a path leads to a
wooded area behind, home to many songbirds. It is a 15-minute
walk or an easy bike ride to Main Street, and a 5-minute walk to Steps
Beach on Nantucket Sound. We are a stone's throw from a stop for the
NRTA bus (a shuttle bus that goes all over the island), so a car is not
absolutely necessary.
Note: The 1724 Josiah Coffin House is owned by relatives, and is also
rented out during the summertime. If you would like to learn more about
this possibility, click here.
History of the Cottage:
The "old" part of the house was purchased in 1949 by the owner
of the Josiah Coffin House with the plan to move it to the shore as a
beach house. However the shorefront land purchase fell
through,
so instead it was placed behind the Josiah Coffin House and two
bedrooms added to make it into a guest house. In 1976 the
property passed to the present owners who removed one of the bedrooms
to replace it with a larger addition, which became the "new"
part
of the house as described above. The bedroom that was removed
was
about to be taken to the dump but as a last minute afterthought it was moved
instead to the corner of the property and became the core of the present bunkhouse, known as
the "Dividend."
