DETAILED
DESCRIPTION:
The cottage has two separate living areas:
1) the "old" (1949) part of the house is a private master suite,
containing a living room with fireplace for nippy nights, bedroom
and private
bath. Bedroom has one very comfortable queen bed
(Tempurpedic mattress).

The "new" (1976) part has a large room containing a living
area with sofa and chairs, TV, digital piano, and wood-burning stove,

plus a fully equipped kitchen area with granite countertops
and a dining area with table that extends to seat up to 8.

From the dining table you have a nice view across the garden to the
historic Josiah Coffin house:

Upstairs in the new part of the house are two bedrooms, one with
a queen size bed and the other with two twin beds, plus a bath:
Our Cottage has a washer/dryer, fully equipped kitchen, cable TV,
DVD player, wireless cable internet, plus a digital piano. There
is lots of original artwork on the
walls
by well-known artists from Nantucket and off-island. We
have many books good for summer "escape" reading, or for learning
about
Nantucket. There is a good collection of puzzles and games.
Adjacent to the cottage is a small bunkhouse, known as
the
"Dividend", which has two twin beds, plus a bath with
shower.
This is quite spartan--but OK for putting up a hardy guest or two for a
couple of nights; please let us know if you want to use the Dividend.
Attached to the Dividend is an outside shower, great for
getting the salt off after swimming.
Cottage
grounds:
Our Cottage is located
way back from Cliff
Road, on land adjacent to the 1724 "Josiah Coffin House"
illustrated above. The cottage is completely invisible from
the
street, and far from any traffic noise. There is
room at
the end of the driveway for parking up to two cars. The
completely fenced-in yard provides privacy and safety for small
children or pets. A pleasant lawn and garden area lies between the
"old" part of the cottage and the Josiah
Coffin House to the north.

On the south side
there is a brick patio (not shown), plus a more extensive lawn with
picnic table, charcoal grill, etc. Behind is a gate opening up
into our private wooded area, home to many songbirds.

It is a two-minute walk to Something Natural which makes the
Island's best sandwiches; a 20-minute
walk or an easy bike ride to Main Street; and a 7-10 minute walk to the
head of Steps
Beach on Nantucket Sound.

We are literally a stone's throw from a stop for the
NRTA bus (a shuttle bus that goes all over the island), so a
car--although recommended-- is not
absolutely necessary . Rental bikes are easy to come by (or bring your
own.)
Note: The adjacent 1724 Josiah Coffin House (see above) is owned by
relatives, and is also
rented out during the summertime. For large groups it is often possible
to rent both houses. If you would like to learn more about
the Josiah Coffin House, click here.
History of the Cottage:
The "old" part of the house was purchased in 1949
by the owner
of the Josiah Coffin House with the plan to move it to the shore as a
beach house. However the shorefront land purchase fell
through,
so instead it was placed behind the Josiah Coffin House and two
bedrooms added to make it into a guest house. In 1976 the
property passed to the present owners who removed one of the bedrooms
to replace it with a larger addition, which became the
"new"
part
of the house as described above. The bedroom that was removed
was
about to be taken to the dump but as a last minute afterthought we
moved it instead to the corner of the property where it became
the core of the present "Dividend" bunkhouse.
