Changing the Rear Differential Oil (2002 RX300)
Contributed by Dave Sawyer, August 2006 [Many Thanks Dave!]
It is always important to have the right tools. Dave has assembled all the important items. Don't forget to use the proper jacking techniques and floor stands before getting under the vehicle.

A few notes concerning the tools:
" Mobil 1 75w90 Synthetic Gear Oil - conforms to latest guidance from Lexus
" Breaker bar was needed to remove both plugs (may not be necessary)
" Fluid pump is necessary to refill the differential
" 10mm Hex Bit Socket is essential to complete the job. This socket type
bit may require some hunting around to find, but it is worth purchasing.
The Rear End is easy to access and the plugs are easily identified.

The drain and fill plugs are easily located. The fill plug is on the driver's side of the differential. You might want to remove the lower plug first to allow the differential to drain while you remove the upper plug.
The real challenge is in removing the fill plug.

Use a 10" extension with the 10mm hex bit to remove the plug. The axle closest to the fill plug may need to be positioned for easier access - if not, the flange covers the plug. This can be done by jacking the vehicle and slowly rotating the wheel.

Once the plugs are removed allow the differential to drain completely. This may take several minutes. Clean and install the drain plug - tighten to 49 N-m, 500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf .
Use the fluid pump to refill the differential. The unit will be full once fluid starts overflowing from the fill plug - should be approximately .9 L (1.0 quart). Clean and install the fill plug.
