We started out with a nice brick mailbox.
|
This is the original mailbox.
|

Then the USPS decided to improve it on 12/2/2003
|
I came home from work one day
and found this. There was a note in the mailbox from our mail
carrier. He said he'd accidentally hit the box and I should call
his supervisor. They sent me an insurance claim form.
Seemed simple enough. I tried to get a quote to get it
fixed. On 1/7/2004. A mason agreed to repair it for
$150. Seemed reasonable.
|

Not satisfied with the superficial damage, they finished the job on
1/7/2004
|
I got home that very night and
found this. This time, the mail carrier had put the mail at our
front door (since he'd obliterated the mailbox) and said he'd hit the
mailbox and I should call his supervisor. The supervisor had also
left a message on our home phone saying that the mail truck had slid on
the ice and hit our mailbox. There was indeed a small patch of
ice near the mailbox. The supervisor admitted that there may have
been a certain amount of carelessness involved.
|

Ah, now that's better.
|
I cleared away the rubble and
made it almost as good as new. The mason who agreed to fix the
mailbox disappeared.
|

Here's the mailbox just before the unveiling.
|
Lynn made some phone calls and
was put in touch with a guy who does this kind of work. He agreed
to build us a new box for $750. The price seemed about what I
expected so we signed him up.
|

There it is. Better than the original. End of saga?
|
We're keeping our fingers
crossed that this mailbox doesn't suffer the same fate as its
predecessor.
