WIFE - Manerva Elinor HamiltonRetyped from an Obituary appearing in Honey Grove Signal, August 1895
IN MEMORIUM
At Ladonia, Texas on Thursday August 22nd, 1895, at 1 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Minerva Elinor SCOTT wife of W.S. Scott of Honey Grove, passed into the great beyond; aged 71 years and eight months.
The deceasd was born in Giles County, Tennessee and when three years of age, with her parents moved to Jackson County, Alabama, where she grew into womanhood and was married to W.S. Scott in 1841, moving that year to Mississippi, where they lived until 1854, when they came to Texas, settling near Waxahachie, Ellis County where they made their home until 1866, when they moved to Fannin County where they continued to reside until her death. She was faithful wife and honored mother for 54 years, and of the 12 children born to their union. 11 survive to mourn her loss: Mrs. E.C. Hudson of Lamasco; J.T. Scott, of Llano, J.R. Scott, W.C. Scott and G.W. Scott of Honey Grove; Judge D.H. Scott of Paris; G.E. Scott and Mrs. Una I Sloan of Bonham; C.H. Scott and Mrs. Mary A Dodson of Ladonia and Mrs. Ella A Yeager of Honey Grove neighborhood, she was the grandmother of fifty-four children and the great grandmother of seven others. Her health had usually been very good until a short time ago when feeling ill she went to Ladonia to be near her daughter at whose home she breathed her last. The body was brought home to Honey Gove on Friday and laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mother Scott was a christian in every acceptation of the word, and at the time of her death was a member of the M.E. Church of Honey Grove, she professed religion in Mississippi 52 years ago, and her life and examples have always been in accordance with the teachings of Christ. There was no ostentation in her religion, once a child of her Redeemer there was no retracing, and death to her was a culminating glory. A few days before her death she remarked to a son, "I am perfectly ready to go; I have lived long enough and shall welcome the time of my going." Glorius resignation! and her hours of illness were eased by her confidence in Him who doeth all things well, that "So softly death succeded life in her. She did dream of heaven, and she was there."
The heartfelt sympathy of a multitude of friends of the family, who have known Mother Scott for nigh onto a half century, are extended to them in this their time of berevement. The wife and loving mother "Still loves, - not dead, but gone before."
CHILD 1 - Elizabeth Carolina SCOTT
Marriage in Ellis County, TX. Marriage Vol. B page 35
CHILD 3 - James Robert SCOTT
James Robert SCOTT and Martha Hattie NASH PETERSON marriage recorded in Fannin County Marriage Record Book D, page 529. Marriage solominizd same day her divorce from L. L. Peterson was finalized - 31 Aug. 1889. Almira Callie McGee date of marriage came from Scott Munn, 501 East California St., Ridgecrest, CA 93555.
*The date 28 Aug 1880, was recorded in the Family Bible of Edwin and Elsie Williams SCOT (It was their belief that it was the date of his parents marriage - not so this is probably the date of the second marriage - wife's name unknown - this wife was the mother Viola, Ewell and Earnest half brothers and sister.)
***It should be noted here that when I (Cleo Morrison) joined this family in 1949 several of thes children from the second and third marriage were still living. To my knowledge none of these people ever mentioned that their was another marriage or that two other children existed. What happened to this wife and two sons? There is a marriage of a J.R. Scott to Almira Callie McGee is he ours - there does not seem to be another J.R. Scott in the Lamar/Fannin area in 1869.
CHILD 4 - David Howell SCOTT, Judge
David being a judge, he was thoughtful enough to leave good records of his family, he was a nice will located in the Lamar County Court House. In this will it lists the widow of his brother James Robert Scott and niece Annie Ruth MORRISON.
*Atached the original copy of obituary and a transcribed copy.
** In D.H. SCOTTS obituary it said that he had fathered eight children of which three survive him. I had been unable to find any record of these other five children, because none of them had been born during a census year or lived long enough to be put on a census record. There were no birth records either. But being a good lawyer and judge he made sure they weren't forgotten. On the back side of his large tomstone was recorded the birth and death of five little boys, each living a very short little life. Henry only six months and seventeen days, David six months and three days, Arthur eight months and fourteen days. Little Willie living the longest two years, two months and eight days, and Edwin living two years, two months and one day.
***Some information was taken from Evergreen Cemetery Book 1865-1971: By Elizabeth Boothe Partners; with B.J. Baldwin in an abstract business. Practiced law in conjuction. Former district Judge SCOTT and Baldwin owned the Paris Railway System in 1900. SCOTT was President of local gas company, also V-P of Farmers Bank. See 1885 City Directory.

Lemuel Dickson Skidmore was born January 31, 1827, in Morgan Co., Alabama to Abraham and Celia (Thompson) Skidmore and died February 15, 1891 in Lamar Co., Texas. He was married to (1) Mary Baker Smiley, march 8, 1849 in Lamar Co., Texas by A. J. Baird, J.P., as recorded in Lamar County Marriage Records, Book 1, Page 52. He married (2) Mrs. Emmaline Click, July 14, 1881 in Lamar Co., Texas as recorded in Lamar Co. Marriage Records, Vol. 8 - Record 320.
On the 1850 Lamar Co., Texas Census we find in Home #96; Skidmore, Lemuel, 24, Ala., Farmer; Mary, 24, Ky. On the 1860 Lamar Co., Texas Census we find: #470-474; farmer; /350; Lem D. Skidmore, 33, Mary, 28; Thomas, 9; Nancy, 6; Isaac, 3; and Samuel, 7/12.
At the outbreak of the Civil War he first enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Texas Militia, under Brig. General Shelton, commanding. The records shows: Lem D. Skidmore, 2nd Lt., age not stated, appears on a Muster Roll and Election Returns from the Texas State Archives for the Texas Militia, Company for Lamar County, Texas, Beat No. 2, 9th Brigade of the State of Texas; officers elected on 5 Aug 1861, in Lamar County; company enrolled by T. L. Click; J. J. Martin elected Captain commanding.
Most of the able bodied men of the Texas Militia resigned in order to join regular Confederate Army units. As Texans, the chivalry (and no foot marching) of the Cavalry Corps was especially attractive. Lemuel was no exception as he later enlisted on 9 Mar 1862 at Paris, TX for 12 months as Private, Co. G, Whitfield's Legion (also known as 27th Texas Cavalry), under Capt. Ed O. Williams.
There is a story about Lem and his cousin, Matthew Skidmore, told my Sam Skidmore of Reno, Texas. 'Matthew was a private in Co. G, 27th Texas Cavalary, often called Hoods Cavalry, and not connected in any way with General Sam Bel Hood. There is a family story about Uncle Matt's capture by the 'Yankees', this story was first told my cousin Lemuel of the Biardstwon Skidmores, south of Paris. He was also of the same cavalry. He talked with an unusually long southern drawl and said when the Federals made an early morning surprise attack, Mathew had to get every old blanket and everything and the Yankees captured him. As for Lem he jumped on his horse and made a run for it with a Yankee chasing and hammering him on the head with his pistol yelling 'halt." Every time he would yell 'halt' Lem would say 'just up yonder' and finally got away. Matt told of being paraded in Washington, D.C. as Hoods ragged cavalry, and that was quite humiliating. Ragged they were indeed.
Returning to his home after the war, Lemuel's father Abram, had died. Lem received a special mention in his father's will, giving him the property he was improving at the time of Abe death. Lem and Mary have a son born at the beginning of the war and two daughters born after the war, as we see on the 1870 Lamar Co., Texas Census: 185-185; farmer; 400/500; Lemuel D., 44; Mary, 37; Thos A., 19; Nancy A., 15; Isaac H., 12; Samuel N. (M), 10; Lemeul S., 8; Eliza J., 4, Sarah M., 1. Emeline Click, the widow of Richard Click and neighbor of the Skidmores, would later marry Lemuel Skidmore. She is listed as a Head of Household on the 1870 Lamar Co., Texas Census: 124-124; H K; 480/200; Click, Emeline, 34 Tenn.; Susan, 17; Mary E., 14; Bill M., 10; John, 5; Emma, 5; Andrew, 1. All the children were born in Texas.
Lemuel's family appears on page 48 in the 1880 Lamar Co., Texas Census, enumberated on the 13th day of July 1880. 405-405; Skidmore, Lem, 55; Mary B., 48; Lem S., 18; Eliza J., 14, Sallie M., 11. Lemuel's father was born in Kentucy, and his mother in Tennessee. (Other records show his mother born in South Carolina.) Mary's father and mother were born in Kentucky.
While Lamar Co., Texas Marriage Records show L.D. Skidmore married Emmaline Click on 14 July 1881. Emmaline Click was born 6 September 1832, according to her grave marker. She is shown as 27 on the 1860 census and 34 in the 1870 census. She died 4 October 1901.
Katy Skidmore Allred visited the Friendship Cemetery in May 1994 and observed the layout of the Skidmore graves located on fourth row directly in front of gate and listed as follows from south to north. Although there is no grave marker, it appear certain that Lemeul and Mary were buried in Friendship Cemetery in the southern part of Lamar Co. (Biardstown area). There are two graves marked for L.S. (Jack) Skidmore and his wife V. Ann Yancey Skidmore. L. S. (Jack) is the son of Lemuel and Mary. The next three unmarked graves spaces (about 16') are believed to be Lemuel and Mary and their young daughter Sarah Mahala born 18 mary 1868. (On Nov. 12, 1995, with the assistance of detection sticks, it was determined that three bodies were buried in this space - two full size adult graves, and one grave some 5' in length were located beside Eliza J. Rudy; next to her is a grave marker for Nancy J. Rudy (daughter of A.H. and E.J. Rudy), born 2 January 1892 and died 29 April 1892. Then there is a cedar tree and the grave of Lemuel's second wife, Emaline (Click) Skidmore; there is a tall monument for Emmaline with 6 September 1832 - 4 October 1901. Next to Emmaline is her daughter, Lucy Emma Click 1865-1891. (Note: James Earl King, lifelong resident of Biardstown, states to his knowledge there are no existing records for Friendship Cemetery.)
Children of Lemuel Skidmore and Mary Smiley are:

He is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, Lamar Co., Texas.

She is buried in Woodward Cemetery, Minter community, Lamar Co., Texas. Eliza was the widow of Hiram Kennedy.

This is told in the book about the Hiram Kennedy family by Cassie Watson Cook. Also in "Backward Glances" by A. W. Neville, published in The Paris News on December 26, 1934.
At the Lamar County Court during the August term A.D. 1906, E. A. Subject: Re: WrightsSteve,
Sorry I hadn't answered until today. Just got back last night from a research trip in Arkansas on the Wrights. Meet a lady by the name of Patricia Dill.
I started researching the Wright family about 4 years ago and know what you mean by stumbling blocks. My ggreatgrandfather was David Wright. I was almost convinced it just crawled out from under a rock to give me a headache. But lately things are changing to some extent.
I believe I have found David's Mother Rachel Smith, Father Richard Wright, and siblings David (My gggrandfather) b: 1818, Lucinda b.1823 (descendant to Patricia Dill whom I met Monday in Waldron, Scott Co., Ark.) John b: 1827, Charles (believe he is yours) b: 1828, Robert b: 1832, Jane (Martha Jane) b: 1834, Jacob (Haven't found anything on him) b: 1840, Nancy b: 1844, and Abraham b: 1846. I have an 1850 census listing Charlie in the household of John, with Rachel and all the siblings except David who married Sarah in Illinois in 1847, and Lucinda who had married Josephus Beeson and was possibly in Missouri at this time.
I have a copy of the 1860 and 1870 Census for Polk County for Charles and also: Note: Found Circuit Clerk's Office Polk Co., Arkansas Courthouse

Application 9083}On the 1860 census for Freedom Township, County Polk, State Arkansas
Charles Wright, wife Martha J. (she was a Yandell who married a Vaughn and has a son named William who is listed on this census) with their 8 year old daughter, plus others, whose name is Mary S (?); on the 1870 Mary is 18 listed as Mary L. Also in the 1860 census there is a William Vaughn, that is Martha's child by first marriage. Also some Yandell children. I believe this are Martha's nephews as she was a Yandell and had a brother named William. Forgot to tell you that on the 1900 census for a great-great aunt who had moved from Arkansas, to Texas, to Oklahoma I found a Quit-claim deed for her husband listing him as guardian for the minor children of George T. Yandell, which is listed as one of the children living in Charles and Martha's household in 1870, and two other siblings who were probably already married are old enough to be out of the household. There were 3 boys and a girl. The girl was married.
I guess by not I have you thoroughly confused. At this moment I have 105 pages on the Wrights. Mostly on David and family but I am adding what I have found on Lucinda, and some of the others including Charles. I would be glad to send you a copy of what I have so far if you are interested. I was going to go to Fannin County yesterday when we were coming home but it was getting late. I live in Decatur, Wise County, Texas. I am planning to try to go to Hunt, Fannin, and Hopkins County sometime soon. David's oldest son was married there in 1869 to a Rebecca Darling. Can't find anything on them after that except the 1870 census.
Do you know if Mary came to Alvord, Wise Co., Texas? Pat sent me an address book that someone from California had sent her and it had addresses for 3 of my great uncles and aunts. It also listed a Mrs. Mary Davis and family, Alvord, Texas and a Joe Buckner, Alvord, Texas.
I am attaching 4 page of my speculation at the time I first found this information in approximately 1999. I am finding and believing more each day with a lot of tie in that my speculation are coming true.
Let me know what you think. I have some pictures of some of the Wrights. One for a Mary Davis also.

Found an 1840 Jackson Co, Illinois Federal Census
Groups are: 1 under 5; 2:5 to 10; 3: 10-15; 4: 15-20; 5:20-30; 6:30-40; 7:40-50; 8:50-60; 9:60-70: 10:70-80; 11:80 and over.Wright, David Head 0021001 (Males) 220001 (Females)
If this is our David he was not married at this time. If the Census listed at the beginning of these notes for 1850 Hickman township, Scott Co., Arkansas listing John 23 as head with Rachel 50 (which I think might possibly be David's mother and the mother of John and the other children listed on this census. This would make them David's siblings) could be Rachel and her husband and some of the other children.
In the IGI of Family Search I found a David Wright b. Abt. 1819 Fredrick, Virginia with a Richard Wright as father and Rachel Smith as mother. This could be our David as we have him being born Oct. 10, 1818 and on census have him listed as being born in Virginia. I found a Richard Wright and Rachel Smith being married on April 16, 1812 Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia, also a Richard Smith marrying Rachel Smith April 16, 1812, Hopewell Mm, Frederick, Virginia. Then I found a Richard Wright listing him as being married on April 16, 1812 stating his being of Hopewell, Frederick, Virginia with his parents Jonathan Wright and mother Hannah Ridgeway.
Am listing all the births and marriages that was found in LDS in IGI for the following people. I am going under the assumption no proof that Richard Wright is the father of David and others listed. I have made the list below only from census have found and placed together.
1. Rachel b. abt. 1800
