Scott was born on 1 Dec. 1800, at Greenville (Granville) Co., VA, and was the thir 2 CONC d of five children. His early life was spent helping his father on plantations in VA and NC 2 CONC . He received his early education in the common schools of North Carolina at Raleigh and Chap 2 CONC el Hill, and studied law at Franklin, TN. Immediately upon completion of his eduation, he acc 2 CONC ompanied his father into Madison County, AL where he purchased a farm. Because of this zest f 2 CONC or adventure in political affairs, he was soon to become one of the most prominent citizens i 2 CONC n the county. 2 CONT 2 CONT It was Robert's original intention, as land records bear out, to establish a town near the pr 2 CONC esent community of Brownsboro. The records portray the original plan, the land was subdivide 2 CONC d with ample streets bearing picturesque names. Famil descendants have been unable to learn w 2 CONC hy this project failed. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1826, Scott returned to this native state to marry Elizabeth Ann PARSONS of Morven, NC. Th 2 CONC ey were married in the latter part of that year at Sneedsboro, NC. Scott and his new bride re 2 CONC turned to Madison County, where he continued to increase his land wealth and popularity wit 2 CONC h the people. (Note: Sneedsboro became Morven.) 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1830, Scott announced his candidacy for the Alabama legislature and was elected by an over 2 CONC whelming majority for a period of two years. Scott served the people of Madison County well d 2 CONC uring this term and subsequently was re-elected for two more years in 1832. Scott gained man 2 CONC y friends in Jackson County, AL during his terms in the legislature. Realizing the business p 2 CONC ossibilities of the newly selected county seat of Bellefonte, he left Madison County for Bell 2 CONC efonte in 1834. Shortly after arriving in Bellefonte, Scott purchased a large farm and an adj 2 CONC oining hotel-tavern which he called "Belle Tavern." This tavern was the scene of many promine 2 CONC nt social and political gatherings in the early ante bellum Bellefonte days. 2 CONT 2 CONT Scott soon became prominent in all public matters and was considered a leader of the "plain p 2 CONC eople." His first venture into politics from Jackson County proved to unsuccessful for he wa 2 CONC s beaten by Governor Chapman for a seat in Congress. In 1836, he was elected to the Alabama l 2 CONC egislature by the people of Jackson County. He often expressed his political convictions to t 2 CONC he people through the medium of the Bellefonte Courier, and early Bellefonte newspaper of whi 2 CONC ch he was editor for several years. Scott was destined to serve the people of Jackson Count 2 CONC y eight time in the Alabama legislature. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1838, Scott was elected Circuit Court Clerk of Jackson County, and while holding this offi 2 CONC ce was elected to the legislature in 1839. When the Alabama legislature convened at Tuscaloos 2 CONC a (Alabama capital at that time) Scott was sworn in as a member, but a group of political ene 2 CONC mies in Jackson County raised the constitutional point that he could not hold two public offi 2 CONC ces at the same time. 2 CONT 2 CONT After much debate, it came to a vote with the legislature voting to deny him his seat and ord 2 CONC ering a new election to be held in Jackson County. Scott, being a very determined man, return 2 CONC ed to his people again as a candidate for the legislature. He was again elected and returne 2 CONC d to Tuscaloosa where he presented his credentials. He refused however to resign as Circuit C 2 CONC ourt Clerk and the legislature again denied him a seat and ordered another election. Scott wa 2 CONC s again elected and again the House refused to seat him. He was saved further embarassment b 2 CONC y the final adjournment of the legislature. This incident was remarkable in the sense tha 2 CONC t a man was elected three times to one session of the legislature. An event of this type ha 2 CONC d never occured in Alabama before; nor has a similar incident occurred in the many years tha 2 CONC t have followed. After this Scott remained in private life, pursuing the practice of law unti 2 CONC l 1842, when he was again elected to the legislature.
