 Sailing Tales

Last updated: 09/03/2006

To my readers.  The time has come for me and my family to close the book on almost 9 years of J-boat ownership.  On Friday, March 31st, 2006 we closed the sale of Stringendo and we will be without a boat.

J/32 Hull 23 is now named Sarah Jane, and is owned by Jay and Jane Ginter of Juneau, Alaska.  I have received some wonderful racing photos of Sarah Jane this summer and it's good to see her in action!

It has been a wonderful experience, and I have enjoyed getting to know some of you just a little bit as you work with and enjoy your J/32.  Thanks for your feedback, your stories, photos and the memories I will have of this wonderful boat.  I will leave this website up for as long as I have the tools to keep it alive.  Thank you all, and Good Sailing!

- Don

Previous introduction:

These pages are dedicated to the owners and prospective owners of the J/32 Sailboat from J/Boats. As the owner of a J/32 I have been interested in seeing and hearing how other owners have outfitted and customized their boat, and about cruising or racing experiences. I welcome your comments and questions, and am most interested in getting other owners to provide photos and information about their J/32. I will publish any information that I get (with permission) and on these pages we can share our ideas, experiences and accomplishments as we live with and learn about our boat.

Disclaimer:

The editor and publisher of these pages has no connection to J/Boats or TPI, except that I bought one of their boats. No one at J/Boats has any editorial role in these pages. Also, any errors or omissions are my own fault, but I take no responsibility for verifying the accuracy of any information provided by other sources.

I also have no connection to any other manufacturer of equipment that may be mentioned on these pages. My employer makes medical ultrasound imaging equipment, and for me boating is just for fun.

About me:

My name is Don Knull, and my wife Kathy and I live just north of Seattle, Washington, USA. Our J/32 "Stringendo" is hull #23 and is moored in Bellingham, Washington, about 70 miles north of our home. Bellingham is on the edge of the San Juan Islands and is a great starting point for cruising in some of the most beautiful waters in the world. From our slip at Squalicum Marina we can be in the Islands in just a few hours, and the Canadian Gulf Islands are just a few more hours away.

About my boat:

Stringendo was built in mid-1997 and was originally delivered to a dealer in Vancouver, Canada. My wife and I first saw her at the Boats Afloat show in Seattle in September 1997. After the show she travelled back to Canada, and we decided to buy her a month later. We took delivery in November, but because of personal matters we were not able to transport her to Seattle until January. After making the three-day voyage into Lake Union she spent the next several months getting outfitted with autopilot, windlass, diesel furnace, instruments and many other goodies. Most of the work was done by the local J-Boat dealer, but I installed a lot of the wiring and instruments myself. I've taken photos of the interior and details, both before and after outfitting. Our dream is to sail to Alaska in a few years, and in the meantime to explore Barkley Sound and Desolation Sound as well as our more local islands and landfalls.

About that name:

Our previous boat, a 1979 San Juan 28, was named "Ceilidh". This is a gaelic name for a traditional celebration or party, where participants wear traditional clothing and play traditional music. Rather like a Hawaiian Luau, but originating in old Scotland. After nine years of explaining how to pronounce Ceilidh (kaylee) and spelling it out carefully for every harbormaster and customs agent, we decided that something simpler was in order.

For many years our family has been involved in music performance and orchestra management. Consequently when seeking a name for our new boat we were drawn to the idea of a musical theme. After some searching we found "Stringendo". Stringendo is an Italian music notational term that means "'Drawing tight', 'squeezing': a direction to play with more tension, therefore faster". This seems to fit in with sailing a boat as well.
