Nolan Possley completed only one pass Friday night, but it was the winner.
The St. Charles East quarterback faked a handoff to fullback Andrew Gomez and
hit tight end Jess Stiedl on a 10-yard slant for a touchdown on the second play
of overtime to give the Saints a 21-14 victory over Waubonsie Valley.
St. Charles East (4-2, 4-0) won its fourth straight game to remain undefeated
in the Upstate Eight conference.
"It was great call by Coach (Mike Fields)," Possley said. "We've
been running that trap up the middle all day to the fullback. He just called to
fake it to him and give a little dump to the tight end. It was great protection
and Jess came up with a great catch."
The Saints' defense then did its part. Stiedl and Kevin Russell teamed up to stop
Waubonsie Valley's Tre Clark short of the goal line on fourth down in overtime.
The Saints battled back from a 14-3 deficit to tie the game 14-14 when Daniel
Keller hit a line-drive field goal that barely made it over the crossbar from
33 yards out with 2 minutes, 31 seconds to play. Keller hit a similar 33-yard
field goal with 1:18 left in the first half to pull the Saints to within 7-3 at
halftime.
