Cover art from Lemon Jelly's Lost Horizons CD (top) and Space Walk CD single (bottom). The discussion is based upon the Lost Horizons version of Space Walk. I don't know if the single is any different.

space walk source was topic 857 in the forum at www.lemonjelly.ky in 2003. The first posts from this thread (February? April?) were missing in the Google cache. The original was complete and nicely presented, but (mysteriously?) disappeared from lemonjelly.ky early in 2005 (?).

Answer to my own question: No, Space Walk lyrics aren't sampled. Near as I can tell, though, several lines from Space Walk are taken verbatim from the words of astronauts. They are combined with other phrases that may have been spoken by astronauts (but I haven't found them) or they were made up.
Lemon Aid referenced Michael O'Connor, who I saw credited for Lost Horizons on somebody's web site (sorry, URL not noted). I now assume that O'Connor performs the work, which I assume was compiled and written by Fred and or Nick.
My copy of the CD has no liner notes; not sure if any do. I did a transcription of Space Walk, which follows. I had seen one on this forum, but had forgotten about it. After doing my own, I found the one at http://www.hovington.com/lemonjelly/space_walk.html. The two versions agree well, though hovington's is better. I do think my "hoo boy" fits more closely than "Good boys."
I've marked lines that I have matched to astronauts via the web. Down a bit are the excerpts where I found the text (sorry for my sloppy research... the URLs were not recorded for most, but some or all came from NASA, which ought to be dependable).
In any event, what I thought at first listenings was sampled communications between Ed White (the first American to walk in space) and mission control is mostly not from space walks, but from the first exploration of the lunar surface. Doesn't detract from the quality of the song, though!
If anybody's got more on this (Lemon Jelly sirs, please?) I'd love to hear about it. Thanks to earlier posters for infobits and enthusiasm.

I have collected the following excerpts.
*** JOHN GLENN ***********************
When he became the first American to orbit Earth on Feb. 20, 1962, Glenn informed ground controllers from his rising Mercury capsule: *****"Zero G and I feel fine."*****
Excerpted from http://www.cnn.com/TECH/space/9811/07/shuttle.03/, a story about Glenn's return to space (and back).
*** END JOHN GLENN *******************
Neil Armstrong leaves the Lunar Module
"Ahh, do you think you can open the hatch at this pressure, about ahh, point one two psi." "Ahh, we're gonna try it." "Roger." "Ahh, *****the hatch is coming open."*****
Armstrong leaves the Eagle's forward hatch with Aldrin's guidance.
*****"How I'm doin'." "You're doin' fine."***** *****"OK, Houston, I'm***** on the porch." "Roger, Neil." "Yeah, we're getting a picture on the TV." "I'm err, at the foot of the ladder. The LM footpads are only err, err, depressed in the surface about err, one or two inches. I'm gonna step off the LM now. That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
* * [snip]
Then it was time for Aldrin to join him.
"Are you ready?" "All set." "Now I wanna err, back up and partially close the hatch. Making sure not to lock it on my [way?] out." "A-ha-ha. Particularly good thought." "That's our home for the next couple of hours and we wanna take good care of it." "There you go." "OK, now I think I'll do the thing." "Hey you got it?" "That's a good step." "Yep." "About a three footer. *****Beautiful, beautiful."*****
"Isn't that something?" "Magnificant site [sight?] out here." "Isn't it fun?"
* * [snip]
"Columbia, this is Houston, are you *****reading you loud and clear*****? Over." "Yeah, *****reading you loud and clear*****, how's it goin'?" "Oh it's beautiful Mike, it really is." "Oh gee, that's great. Is the lighting half way decent?" "Yes indeed. They got the flag up now. You can see the Stars and Stripes." *****"Beautiful, beautiful, just beautiful."*****

don't know anything about o'connor, but Michael Collins was the third American to space walk, during the Gemini 10 mission in July of 1966.

If it was LJ's invention (clarity of voice makes it seem very possible), then perhaps this guy did the work?
1st link is to a demo mp3 for a voice-over artist in the U.K., represented by International Artistes (2nd link) - an agency in London in Holborn Hall. His one-line bio on the agency's site reads:
"(young) Confident and versatile American voice with a fantastic range of impressions and accents."
demo mp3 of Michael O'Connor - Voice-Over Artist
international artistes
When you get to this site, click on "Male Voice-Overs" at top left. then scroll down on the page to see his picture. If you click on the picture you'll hear the mp3.
it's a total shot in the dark, but it seems possible, doesn't it? |

Well it seems the question's been answered but, for my tuppence-worth, I'd like to add that, since we know that 'Ramblin Man' was scripted & recorded by LJ but inspired by an actual interview (with Clark Gable, wasn't it? Someone like that), it's quite likely that 'Space Walk' is also a conspiracy. |

I'm still hoping someone knows where the sunrise passages come from... sure, LJ coulda scripted them, but they seem genuine enough. "startin to get some pretty good oscillations" just sounds astronautesque.
Tnx landlouper for M O'C confirm. That Cal Worthington bit hinted strongly at the space walk drawl.
And not that anybody's paying close attention, but the how'm I doin' exchange is Armstrong and Aldrin, not Houston. (Unless I've erred again.) |

xot - you're welcome, though I feel sheepish for having gone to the trouble, I do like that I was able to do so. just hope i haven't placed this info in too public a place.
you seem extremely interested in this one track. would it be too forward of me to ask what about spacewalk has you so intrigued? think it's great that you are. |

1. Space Walk was a song I heard on the radio (WUNH)while driving home from work. It was making me smile. Pulled into the driveway at the guitar break and was hooked. Sat in the car till the song ended and the DJ told me who it was. Never heard of Lemon Jelly.
2. Thought LJ had accessed a recording of the first American space walk. Such a recording must exist and as a child of the space age I got curious about how to get it and similar material. Still no answer on that, incidentally.
3. Was reminded through the process that Ed White was the first American to make a space walk. Knew that White was also among those killed in a launch pad accident not many years later. Imagined the Space Walk source to have been directly from the man who said, when his 20-minute space walk was over, "It's the saddest moment of my life."
4. Connecting the sensational thrill heard in Space Walk to that saddest moment was not a stretch. The emotional hook went deeper.
5. Found a forum of jellyheads etc who knew a lot more about LJ than me. When few answers came back, I went looking. Think I'm pretty much done searching now.
6. Gave me a chance to learn more about LJ and listen to Lost Horizons many many times! |
