Books Published or Pending
by Stephen Allen Grant, Jr.
The Internet has infiltrated our lives in so many ways. In my case, it made me a writer and self-publisher. And, three weeks after completing a book, I have as many copies of a book as I desire...for a price. And, if I want to sell some books, there are hundreds of places where I can make them available. As such, I made the plunge -- not to sell books, but to published them for my family and friends.
Since retiring in 2000, I have written three books. The first one was stated in 1992, with just one-line notes to help me remember each story. I knew as I grew older, I would forget stories, or at least the details, and they would be lost forever. That book was titled, Grant Me A Little Place in History. It took me 10 years to complete and was self-published in 2002.
The second book, titled God Stepped In, was an inspiration that came to me one night. It took 3 weeks to write and is 48 pages long.
My third book, a genealogy summary of our Grant lineage, was completed in 2006. It is a collection of information I started gathering in 1980. Most of the information I collected has occurred in the past 5-7 years. This particular book has a name very similar to the first book, as it is titled, Grant Me A Little Space In History. There are many surnames because I tried to gather information on each of the families. I only printed a few books for distribution to family members and genealogy libraries. I will make DVD copies available upon request.
More recently, I started collecting funny little comments and profound statements made by our grandchildren beginning at the age of four. It will be a very short book, but will have some pictures. I have not yet arrived at a title, but it might be something along the lines of Wisdom in Triplicate.

Grant Me A Little Place In History is a 96-page book that tells a light-hearted story about the first 25 years of my life. I wrote it because I have learned over the last 28 years of genealogy research that the Grant's did not write about the family. As such, it has been incredibly hard to research our lineage. I wanted my children and their offspring to know something about our family and my life. It will mean more to the grandchildren and subsequent generations, when they were old enough to really appreciate stories from my life as a youngster growing up in Houston. The first 19 pages of the book is the genealogy findings as of 2002. In many ways, the book is a tribute to many people who influenced my life and gave me the insight to give something back to the community. Just as many of them had no idea they might have a strong influence on my life, the same holds true for me and my relationship with others. This book is dedicated to them. |

God Stepped In was an inspiration that came in
the night. It took three weeks to write and a
lifetime to experience. This little 56-page book
is about events that occurred in our family's life that might have
rewritten the future had one tiny detail been different.
In most instances, the examples in the book are the
result of accidents or near mishaps that could have
altered our history. It is not intended to convince anyone that God influences our existence, but I do believe God has a plan for us and frequently influences the outcome of incidents. Look back in you life and try to remember instances when history could have been altered for you based upon one tiny detail. |

Grant Me A Little Space In History is
genealogical history of my lineage, starting with Thomas
Grant and his wife Sarah Glover Grant. The history
only takes me back to about 1778. The first
written record of Thomas was noted in the Maury County,
TN Chancery Court Records in 1815. Fires and
destruction from the Civil War resulted in many county
records being lost forever. To move past the
preverbal brick wall, I helped start a Grant DNA project
that now has 131
participants. Hopefully, in time, we will be able
to piece the puzzle together and learn more about the past. Four significant findings over the years about the family has made my research most pleasurable. Thomas was recorded with lawyer James K. Polk, former president of the United States, on at least two occasions. His son, James Davis Grant (my great-grandfather) was a state representative in the 16th and 17th Texas Legislative Sessions (1879-1881). During the 17th session, he voted on the bill to establish the University of Texas at Austin. And, he and his son, James Polk Grant (my grandfather), bought and sold land in Robertson County, TX, where the Land Deed Records show in excess of 200 transactions between 1856 and 1919. The book is about 250 pages long and has over 2,000 names, including about 575 surnames, numerous photos, and an assortment of exhibits. There are 12 other family trees of varying lengths included among the exhibits, including Duncan, Talley, Fowler, Davis, Looney, Whitehead, Weaver, Perkins, Jackson, Willis, Dunlap and Finley. |
