It took five of us to
identify
almost all of the people in attendance.
We suspect there will be errors
and
would like to hear from you if you can
identify someone or or find an error. I have the rows numbered to help
describe the location of the picture in question.

Reunion50
April 28, 2007
|
During the summer of 2006, Allen began receiving a number of inquiries from classmates asking if a reunion was in the works. The answer was “No, no one has stepped up to the plate to head it up.” In August, Allen contacted Mary Ellen Hoskins Hobbs to see if she wanted to get something going. Her suggestion was to poll the approximate 125 classmates to we had an email address and find out the type of reunion that would appeal to them. There was an overwhelming interest in something very casual where people could visit and reminisce. Regal Ranch fit that bill, as it is very rustic and casual. And, some wanted to visit the school, as they had not been to the building since graduation. A letter was prepared and mailed out last September, thus Reunion50 was underway. Within a couple of weeks, it was evident the level of interest in a reunion was real. To maintain a continuous focus on the plans, Allen Grant established a website so everyone in the class had first-hand information regarding the progress of the reunion plans. Reunion50 included two activities – a two-hour get-acquainted gathering in the gym of the old high school that morning and a party at Regal Ranch in Stafford, TX during the evening. |
More than 60 people went to the high school to renew old
acquaintances. Everyone had an opportunity to reminisce and tour the building.
As you might expect, the Conservatory was the highlight of the tour. So many
memories were rekindled as people perused the photos, trophies and yearbooks. That evening, 140 classmates and guest met at Regal Ranch in Stafford, TX for dinner, music and reminiscing about the past 50 years. The excitement of seeing so many old friends, some for the first time in 50 years, was overwhelming. Throughout the evening, Allen and Mary Ellen heard the words, “Thanks for making our reunion happen…this is wonderful!” Dorothy Stevens Bruner did a superb job creating name
tags with a yearbook photo of each person on their
respective tag. In addition, she brought numerous CD’s
of music from 1950’s. |
|
|
|
Allen
told a few stories about fellow students (some real and
some fiction) and Mary Ellen recognized those who helped
with the planning and activities
related to the reunion venues. Allen also explained that
he was totally responsible for dropping two cakes upside
down on the parking lot pavement, to which Mary Ellen
suggested that everyone" just eat around the gravel!" Throughout the evening, a five-minute PowerPoint presentation titled, The Bells Toll, memorialized the 72 deaths in our class since graduation. |
Celene and
Arlene had a video of the 40th reunion playing at different times during the
evening as well. Dorothy Stevens Bruner was successful in encouraging Coach Jesse Martin to come and be a part of the group. Celene was successful in encouraging Coach Martin to make a few comments. Among other comments, he tried to bring Coach “Dike” Rose, who was just not able to come. |

Mary
Ellen made arrangements to have Raines Video Productions come and video
both activities. The two-hour video was made available to all 1957 graduates who
wanted to order a copy. As of this writing, the videos are due out in
about a week. The party had to end by 11:00 pm. However, as with most old folks, many had left by 10:00 pm. Allen was the last one to walk out the door….it was only 10:30! |
All in all, everyone had
a great time and many expressed a desire to have another
one in a few years. Some suggested having get-togethers for lunch
periodically. And, some suggest that we start attending the quarterly meetings
and go to lunch following the meeting. The latter idea is building as a
number of folks plan to attend the December meeting. The pictures below are compliments of Jim Sorrell, Ginger Nelson Blanton, Judy Chase Webb, Dana Donsky Solomon, Fred Guenzel & Allen Grant. |

"Our Road Down Memory Lane Leads Us To - Black & White"
ARLENE
YOU COULD HARDLY SEE FOR ALL THE SNOW, SPREAD THE RABBIT EARS AS FAR AS THEY GO. PULL A CHAIR UP TO THE TV SET,
(ARLENE & CELENE TURN TO EACH OTHER) "GOOD NIGHT, DAVID -------- GOOD NIGHT CHET."
DEPENDING ON THE CHANNEL YOU TUNED, YOU GOT ROB AND LAURA - OR WARD AND JUNE. IT FELT SO GOOD, IT FELT SO RIGHT LIFE LOOKED BETTER IN BLACK AND WHITE.
CELENE
I WANNA GO BACK TO BLACK AND WHITE, EVERYTHING ALWAYS TURNED OUT RIGHT.
SIMPLE PEOPLE, SIMPLE LIVES... GOOD GUYS ALWAYS WON THE FIGHTS.
NOW NOTHING IS THE WAY IT SEEMS, IN LIVING COLOR - ON THE TV SCREEN.
TOO MANY MURDERS, TOO MANY FIGHTS, I WANNA GO BACK TO BLACK AND WHITE.
ARLENE
AND IF I COULD, I'D RATHER BE, IN A TV TOWN IN "53" IT FELT SO GOOD, IT FELT SO RIGHT I'D TRADE ALL THE CHANNELS ON THE SATELLITE, JUST TO TURN BACK THE CLOCK WHEN EVERYONE KNEW WRONG FROM RIGHT.
YES, LIFE WAS BETTER IN BLACK AND WHITE.
CELENE
OUR PATH NOW LEADS US TO THE OLD-TIMERS --------------
WHEN THEY USED TO CUT CHICKENS, CHOP EGGS, AND SPREAD MAYO ON THE SAME CUTTING BOARD, WITH THE SAME KNIFE, - BUT WE DIDN'T SEEM TO GET FOOD POISONING.
THEY USED TO DEFROST HAMBURGER ON THE COUNTER AND WE USED TO EAT IT RAW SOMETIMES TOO. OUR SCHOOL LUNCHES WERE WRAPPED IN WAX PAPER IN A BROWN PAPER BAG AND KEPT IN OUR LOCKERS ---- NOT IN ICEPACK COOLERS ---- BUT, I CAN'T REMEMBER GETTING E-COLI.
ARLENE
WE ALL TOOK GYM, NOT P E...AND RISKED PERMANENT INJURY WITH A PAIR OF HIGH TOP KED'S INSTEAD OF HAVING CROSS-TRAINING ATHLETIC SHOES WITH AIR CUSHION SOLES AND BUILD IN LIGHT REFLECTORS.
FLUNKING GYM WAS NOT AN OPTION...EVEN FOR STUPID KINDS! I GUESS "P E" MUST BE MUCH HARDER THAN GYM.
THE TERM CELL PHONE WOULD HAVE CONJURED UP A PHONE IN A JAIL CELL, AND A PAGER WAS THE SCHOOL P A SYSTEM.
I JUST CAN'T RECALL HOW BORED WE WERE WITHOUT COMPUTERS, PLAY STATIONS, NINTENDO, X-BOX, OR CABLE TV.
WE MUST HAVE HAD HORRIBLE DAMAGED PSYCHES. WHAT AN ARCHAIC HEALTH SYSTEM WE HAD THEN.
CELENE
BACK THEN, WHEN WE GOT A BEE STING, FELL OUT OF TREES, GOT CUT, OR WHEN WE DID GET HURT - MOM PULLED OUT A $.48 CENT BOTTLE OF MERCUROCHROME. OH YEA...AND WHERE WAS THE BENADRYL AND STERILIZATION KIT? WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED!!
NOW IT'S A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM, FOLLOWED BY A 10 DAY DOSE OF AN $80 BOTTLE OF ANTIBIOTICS, AND THEN MOM CALLS THE ATTORNEY TO SUE.
TO TOP IT OFF, NOT A SINGLE PERSON WE KNEW HAD EVER BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WERE FROM A DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY. HOW COULD WE HAVE POSSIBLY KNOWN THAT WE NEEDED TO GET INTO GROUP THERAPY AND ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES?? WE WERE OBVIOUSLY SO DUPED BY SO MANY SOCIETAL ILLS, THAT WE DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE THAT THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WASN'T TAKING PROZAC!! (CELENE & ARLENE).................HOW DID WE EVER SURVIVE??
ARLENE
WELL, FIRST WE SURVIVED BEING BORN TO MOTHERS WHO SMOKED OR DRANK WHILE THEY WERE PREGNANT.
THEY TOOK ASPIRIN, ATE BLEU CHEESE DRESSING AND TUNA FROM A CAN.
THEN AFTER THAT TRAUMA, WE WERE PUT TO SLEEP ON OUR TUMMIES, IN BABY CRIBS PAINTED WITH BRIGHTLY COLORED LEAD PAINTS.
WE HAD NO CHILD PROOF LIDS ON MEDICINE BOTTLES, AND WHEN WE RODE OUR BIKES, WE HAD NO HELMETS.
AS INFANTS AND CHILDREN, WE WOULD RIDE IN CARS, WITH NO CAR SEATS, BOOSTER SEATS, SEAT BELTS, OR AIR BAGS.
WE DRANK WATER FROM THE GARDEN HOSE, AND NOT FROM A BOTTLE.
WE SHARED ONE SOFT DRINK WITH 4 FRIENDS, FROM THE SAME BOTTLE AND NO ONE ACTUALLY DIED FROM THIS.
WE ATE CUPCAKES, WHITE BREAD, AND REAL BUTTER, AND DRANK KOOL AID MADE WITH SUGAR, BUT WE WEREN'T OVERWEIGHT BECAUSE....(CELENE & ARLENE)............... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING.
CELENE
WE WOULD LEAVE HOME IN THE MORNING AND PLAY ALL DAY,....AND NO ONE WAS ABLE TO REACH US. WE DIDN'T HAVE C D'S, CELL PHONES, PERSONAL COMPUTERS, INTERNET OR CHAT ROOMS. WE HAD FRIENDS......AND (CELENE & ARLENE) WE WENT OUTSIDE AND FOUND THEM.
THE IDEA OF A PARENT BAILING US OUT IF WE BROKE THE LAW WAS UNHEARD OF. THEY ACTUALLY SIDED WITH THE LAW.
OUR GENERATION HAS PRODUCED SOME OF THE BEST RISK-TAKERS, PROBLEM SOLVERS, AND INVENTORS EVER.
THE PAST 50 YEARS HAS BEEN AN EXPLOSION OF INNOVATION AND NEW IDEAS, WE HAD FREEDOM, FAILURE, SUCCESS, AND RESPONSIBILITY - AND WE LEARNED....(CELENE & ARLENE) HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!
ARLENE
IT USED TO BE THAT:
A WAS FOR APPLE AND
B WAS FOR BOAT, THAT USED TO BE RIGHT, BUT NOW IT WON'T FLOAT. AGE BEFORE BEAUTY - IS WHAT WE ONCE SAID BUT LET'S BE A LITTLE MORE - REALISTIC INSTEAD.
CELENE
NOW A'S FOR ARTHRITIS, B'S THE BAD BACK
C IS THE CHEST PAINS, PERHAPS CARDIAC?
D IS FOR DENTAL DECAY, AND DECLINE,
E IS FOR EYESIGHT, CAN'T READ THAT TOP LINE.
F IS FOR FISSURES, AND FLUID RETENTION,
G IS FOR GAS, WHICH I'D RATHER NOT MENTION
H IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE - I'D RATHER IT LOW, FOR INCISIONS, WITH SCARS YOU CAN SHOW.
ARLENE
J IS FOR JOINTS, OUT OF SOCKET, WON'T MEND.
K IS FOR KNEES, THAT CRACK WHEN THEY BEND.
L FOR LIBIDO, WHAT HAPPENED TO SEX?
M IS FOR MEMORY, I FORGET WHAT COMES NEXT
N IS NEURALGIA, IN NERVES WAY DOWN LOW,
O IS FOR OSTEO, THE BONES THAT DON'T GROW!
P FOR PRESCRIPTIONS, WE HAVE QUITE A FEW, JUST GIVE US A PILL, AND WE'LL BE GOOD AS NEW!
CELENE
Q IS FOR QUEASY, IS IT FATAL OR FLU?
R FOR REFLUX, ONE MEAL TURNS TO TWO.
S FOR SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, COUNTING OUR FEARS,
T FOR TINNIITUS, THERE ARE BELLS IN OUR EARS.
U IS FOR URINARY, BIG TROUBLES WITH FLO,
V IS FOR VERTIGO, THAT'S DIZZY YOU KNOW.
W IS FOR WORRY, NOW WHAT'S GOING "ROUND"?
X IS FOR X-RAY, AND WHAT MIGHT BE FOUND.
ARLENE
Y IS ANOTHER YEAR, WE'RE LEFT HERE BEHIND,
Z IS FOR ZEST, THAT WE STILL HAVE............IN OUR MINDS.
WE'VE SURVIVED ALL THE SYMPTOMS OUR BODIES DEPLOYED, AND WE'VE KEPT 26 DR'S - FULLY EMPLOYED!!!!!!!
IN CLOSING, WE HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED OUR TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE. LOVE, TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA,
IF YOU CAN REMEMBER MOST OR ALL OF THIS........THEN YOU HAVE LIVED!!!!!!!!
CELENE & ARLENE
WE WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING!!!!!
