First local meal

For our first local meal for the One Local Challenge, we wanted to start simple and then gain some momentum.  We had a grilled chicken salad, one of our usual summer staples, but took extra care on the origin of all ingredients.  We live in Lancaster County, so the salad part is always easy, but the point of this week’s exercise was no more Purdue!  Greens and spinach came from our CSA, Goodwill at Homefields Farm.  Dill was purchased at the Millersville Community Market Night.  We found fresh radishes and asparagus at Funks Farm Market, and Lancaster County raised chicken was purchased at John Herr’s Village Market.  So for the first week of the challenge, we realized that there are many sources for local food, more than we ever realized.  We didn’t even venture downtown Lancaster to Central Market.  We are so fortunate to live where we do.  The discussion over salad at the picnic table centered around what we were embarking on, and why we are doing it.  Our children, Connor, age 7 and Anna, age 6 love going to the farm and love eating and helping to prepare meals.  When asked why we were doing this challenge, Connor replied “because the food doesn’t go on the airplane”.  He gets it. This is going to be fun.
