GREENWAYS RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION 03-099

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE SANIBEL CITY COUNCIL RECOGNIZING OCTOBER AS FLORIDA GREENWAYS AND TRAILS MONTH; AND URGING LEE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT GREENWAYS AND TRAILS ON SANIBEL; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE

 

            WHEREAS, the observance of Greenways and Trails Month is designed to focus the attention of Sanibel residents on the benefits that greenways and trails provide for the natural environment and people; and

 

            WHEREAS, the Sanibel Shared Use Paths and Trails System help conserve native landscape and ecosystems, links natural areas and open spaces, and offer a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities; and

 

            WHEREAS, the Sanibel Shared Use Paths and Trails System encourages Sanibel residents and visitors to appreciate the island’s natural historical and cultural heritage, as well as enhances their sense of place and enriches their quality of life; and

 

            WHEREAS, the Lee County’s Greenways and Trails system, including Sanibel’s 22.7 miles of Shared Use Paths and Trails promotes awareness, understanding and recreational use of Lee County’s Greenways and Trails, and make nature based and heritage-tourism profitable and sustainable industries and are used as an educational tool for children and adults;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Sanibel, Florida:

 

SECTION 1.  The City Council hereby encourages all citizens and visitors of the Sanibel community to take pride in our system of Shared Use Paths and Trails.

 

SECTION 2.  The City Council hereby urges the Lee Board of County Commissioners to provide adequate funding to support the Shared Use Paths and Trails that attract visitors from around the globe and from throughout Lee County at a level commensurate with use by visitors.

 

SECTION 3.  Effective date.

 

This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.

 

Adopted by Sanibel City Council on a vote of 5-0 on October 21, 2003
