Ben Heflinger Hudson, corner of First and Spurgeon Sts., Santa Ana, CA. Photo circa 1947-48. Years of business were loosely the '40's to as late as March 1952 as a Santa Ana Hudson was listed at this address in a 3/9/52 L.A. Times advertisement. Before the Hudson dealership, Heflinger was the head of Cecil B Demille's (movie director) airport at the site of where Farmer's Market is today in Los Angeles (Fairfax & Wilshire). An interesting sidenote -- the daredevil of the 30's, Omer Locklear "The Man Who Walked on Wings" was killed at that airport filming a movie. After the crash, Heflinger got out of the aviation industry and into automotive sales. After Hudson, it's rumored he sold Mercedes Benz but may have been at a different location?
As mentioned already, Santa Ana Hudson replaced Heflinger's business and was in business there through at least 11/29/53 per newspaper ads. No other information or pictures are currently available for this time span. Not sure if Ben Heflinger simply changed his business name or a new owner/operator took over.
A McDonald's now sits on the corner where Heflinger Hudson once stood. The lamp posts from the era still survive along Spurgeon St. now painted black and having round globes compared to the gold posts and elongated glass of the day.
A street view shows that the brick-faced "Used Car" building on the right of original image still stands today, but garage bays have been added to building. The pine tree behind building is still there, although a bit scraggly now. Thank you to website viewer Claudia for sharing this image.
A close-up of Rabun's Auto Glass, 302 E 1st St, shows the detail of brick still proving the test of time.
