A.E. England, 424 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ. The Spanish Renaissance Revival style building was constructed by locally prominent builder Clinton Campbell and had A.E. England Motors, Inc. as its first tenant. England left the auto sales business sometime in the early 1930s. The building would be occupied over the next twenty-five years by the Electrical Equipment Co., who sold items such as radios, batteries, and Kelvinator refrigerators. It has recently been renovated into a public auditorium as part of the Civic Space Park on the ASU campus.

New Auto Agency To Open
Here In February

Gilroy's newest automobile agency, a Hudson dealership will open offically in about 30 days, it was jointly announced today by Don Smith, Guy Smith and Art Kleidon, owners.
The company will be known as Smith and Kleidon, Hudson dealers. Their place of business in in the quarters formerly occupied by Nat Heiner Farm Supply near Home Gas & Appliance Co.
The sales agency will also feature an auto repair shop, with full equipment and mechanical help. John Wentworth, owner of the building, will pave front and rear of the building, the owner said.
The three men are from San Jose. Kleidon was service manager at Harry King, Hudson dealer of that city for several years. The Smiths are partners in Smith Motor Parts Co. of San Jose, who specialize in rebuilt motors for all cars.
The building is being renovated and conditioned for a grand opening sometime during the first part of February, the owners said.
Smith-Kleidon, 903 Monterey Street North, Gilroy, CA from 1953 to 1954(Also seen in 06/11/53 newspaper ad.), when it became Smith Bros. Hudson until 1955. The dealership may have morphed into a Rambler dealership and still hung on to the Hudson brand through '57, but the dealership name from the '55-'60 time frame is not yet confirmed. It was then Borman Rambler Sales from at least 1960-1961, then Davies Rambler Sales from 1961-1962, and on to Quality Rambler [as well as International] from 1963-1965. This location went on to host many other dealerships through the years.

From "The Gilroy [CA] Dispatch": Hudson Dealers Open Saturday
Appointment of Smith-Kleidon, 903 Monterey St. North, Gilroy, as Hudson dealers was announced by N.K. VanDerzee, Hudson vice-president in charge of sales, last week.

A modern, completely equipped service department staffed by factory-trained mechanics will provide fast and efficient service for Hudson owners.

Leland Cerruti
Leland Cerruti, San Jose, CA: This rather elegant auto dealership opened in San Jose in 1930 as Col & Cerruti, later Leland Cerruti, Inc. It is believed that Leland Cerruti also had the Hudson franchise here (as many Packard dealers did in the early '30's) from 1934 to 1936. This was San Jose's Packard dealership until 1956, when then-dealer Howard Gustin switched from Packard to Nash. Subsequently Ramblers, DeSotos, Checkers and Subarus were sold here. It hasn't been a new-car dealership since 1970. Click here for more pictures of this dealership.

Motor Supply, Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu
Motor Supply started as a tire store and auto parts supply house in 1937. They started selling Nashes and Hudsons after World War II. The company expanded further down the street in 1952 and built a distinctive showroom modeled on the faux tiki A-frame architecture popular at the time. Motor Supply consolidated its business at 1391 Kapiolani Blvd. in the late 1950s under the Rambler brand. 1391 Kapiolani Blvd may have housed Cutter Chevrolet before it moved to its current location.

ILLINOIS

Midway Building
Unknown Hudson Essex Dealer located in the Midway Building, 6054 Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, IL
I believe this building served as an auto row of sorts, also hosting a Cadillac Branch and Willys & Overland at some point. Alfred Samuel Alschuler (1876-1940) was the architect for this building. It was constructed in 1923. It has been demolished.

Unknown Hudson Dealership, 2222 to 2230 Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL: Construction on the Spanish Revival building started 07/01/1922. The architect was yet again Alfred Samuel Alschuler. 1928 showroom for Hudson automobiles, which survived until 1950. You may be interest in other buildings on this street.br>

N. T. Knight & Son, 119 S. Capitol Avenue, Corydon, Indiana:
I'm the son and grandson of an old Hudson and AMC dealer in Corydon, Indiana. Dad and Grand-dad formed their business, N. T. Knight & Son, in 1941, and the business was originally located at the southwest corner of North Capitol Avenue and Walnut Street in downtown Corydon. In August or September of 1945, the business moved 4 blocks south, to 119 South Capitol Avenue, and took on the Hudson franchise. N. T. Knight & Son was my grand-dad, Newland Thomas Knight, and his son, Donn R. Knight. Besides the Hudson franchise, they sold International Harvester trucks and tractors [and refrigerators and freezers], BFGoodrich tires, and Texaco products.

While I don't have any memorabilia from the AMC days, I have framed on my wall one of the posters they had printed advertising the "New 1950 Hudsons, at Sensational LOWER PRICES". I've heard that a local scrapyard has an advertising fan that the company gave away to local funeral homes and churches [remember, air conditioning wasn't that common in the late 1950's], with photos of the 1956 Hudson Hornet and Rambler, with the words, "I'm a Hudson and Rambler FAN".

Dad always talked of going to Cincinnati to pick up new Hudsons, or of having them shipped by barge down the Ohio River to Louisville, 4th Street wharf, where they'd pick them up and drive them to Corydon. Dad complained that cars were more likely to be damaged in transit when they were sent by barge. In the AMC days, they got cars delivered to their door by KAT....which at that time stood for Kenosha Auto Trasport. But when Newt ordered his '57 Rebel, he'd waited long enough that they had to go to Chicago to pick it up...and when they got there, there were only two available. While Newt had wanted the overdrive tranny, he had to settle for what they had on hand, which turned out to be one with the Hydramatic and the continental kit.

In January 1959, downtown Corydon was severely flooded, and N. T. Knight & Son didn't have flood insurance. Lots of stuff was lost as the building had 3 feet of water in it, and for several weeks thereafter a lot of mud was washed off whatever was salvagable. I think it was at that point, after the "RAMBLER" sign they'd just bought a couple of years before was deemed "obsolete" by the factory rep from the Cincinnati zone, that Newt decided enough was enough, and the franchise was terminated by mutual agreement.

In 1960, there was no AMC dealer in Corydon. In 1961, Purkhiser Oldsmobile took up the AMC franchise, but they treated Rambler as the "bastard stepchild" that it was to them. They had the franchise thru '63 or so, and after that, Wolfe Motor Sales, Corydon's Studebaker dealer, apparently saw the handwriting on the wall and picked up AMC. Ralph Wolfe retired in the early '70's, and his son Ray ran the dealership until his health gave out in the early 1980's.

Today, Verizon owns the building at 119 S. Capitol Avenue where N. T. Knight & Son was located. The local phone company, which was absorbed eventually by Verizon, bought the building and the vacant lot where Newt and Donn had their car/truck/tractor/implement lot next door in 1960, and built their office there in about 1964.

Purkhiser Olds was located around the corner from N. T. Knight & Son, at 115 E. Poplar Street. Frank Purkhiser and his son Harold ran the dealership until the 1979-80 time frame when they closed. The building there is now Lisa's Sports Bar & Grill, and is known informally in town as the "Oldsmobile Lounge."

Wolfe Motor Sales actually occupied both sides of the street at 207 W.Walnut, with the tiny garage, showroom, parts counter, and Texaco gas pumps on the south side of the street, and his wash rack/cleanup area and used car lot on the north side of Walnut Street. The south side is now occupied by John D's Auto Repair, and the north side of the street is now home to Jamie Whitman Auto Sales.

Douglas Hudson Motors, 2411 Bardstown Rd (corner of Bardstown Road and Douglas Boulevard), Louisville, KY: It began as Douglas Hudson Motors, changed to Douglas Ramber, and ended in 1980 as Wilhelmi's Douglas American... Circa 1983, Blue Grass Lincoln-Mercury AMC-Jeep-Renault Saab Isuzu Alfa-Romeo was located at 4301 Shelbyville Road in Louisville, KY and had purchased the franchise from Tafel Motors, a couple blocks away on Shelbyville Road. Blue Grass' owner was Herb Vine, and Herb kept promising AMC a separate showroom that never materialized. Finally, in early 1985, AMC had had enough, and they pulled the franchise from Blue Grass. Shortly before that, Jack Wilhelmi, the former Hudson dealer on Bardstown Road in Louisville, had decided to close his operation, Wilhelmi's AMC [formerly Douglas Rambler, and before that Douglas Hudson Motors],and sold the franchise to Cross Pontiac, a dealership that had moved around 1978-'79 from downtown Louisville to a new facility at Newburg Road and the Watterson Expressway. A Kroger grocery was built where the showroom used to stand, and I believe a Hardees restaurant ended up on the corner where Jack's used car operation stood. Cross Motors may have also purchased the remaining vehicles and parts inventory from Blue Grass. Today Cross Motors is strictly a Chrysler-Jeep dealership. And Herb Vine's sons and son-in-law sold their Hyundai, Mazda, Isuzu, and Lincoln-Mercury franchises to Oxmoor Auto Group and moved the remaining Saab, Audi, and Porsche dealerships to a new building on Bowling Blvd. in Louisville. Oxmoor had the Hyundai-Isuzu franchise in the old Blue Grass building at 4301 Shelbyville Road until late 2008,when they moved it to the 7900 block of Shelbyville Road, near their new Toyota building. The old Blue Grass building is believed to still be empty. In the mid-'70's, Wade Swope built a new facility at 8107 Shelbyville Road, across from the then-nearly new Oxmoor Mall. The dealership was known as AMC East, but by 1979. Wade Swope was selling Toyotas there, and Tafel Motors had the AMC-Jeep franchise. The building that was AMC East became Oxmoor Toyota until 2008, when Oxmoor Auto Group built a new Toyota facility, and today the AMC East building is occupied by Oxmoor Mazda.
