Restoration FAQ's

How did you become interested in old cars? Some auto enthusiasts may have quite the story to answer that question. For me, I suppose it simply began as the allure of the unknown, a curiousity of a time gone past,... next thing you know... you're "car crazy," as the saying goes. When it was time to own one, I wanted something not so common and brought home my first restoration project, the following 1954 Hudson JetLiner.

In July of 2004, my husband and I bought a set of Jets for $660 off of eBay, a 1953 Super Jet and a 1954 Jetliner. At the time of purchase, the Jetliner was described as having already had the following work done: Rebuilt 202 engine, rebuilt OD tranny, clutch and brakes, recored radiator, and rewired for 12V. It also had new radial tires, u joints, and rear end seals. The previous owner had also begun stripping a previous paint job and epoxy priming the body. As you will see, the decision was made to take it back down to bare metal and make an investment out of the undertaking.

Next on agenda: April should see the interior completed. Hopefully, we can get the fenders, hood, and trunk back on shortly. We're trying to get this wrapped up and debut it August 29th at the LeMay Car Show in Tacoma, WA.

Q: What are the common areas for rust on Jets?
A: Both passenger doors on my JetLiner needed to be reskinned and the rocker panels on both sides of the car ended up being cut out and replaced (fabricated from scratch). (Jets have welded-on rocker panels.) The quarter panels are also at risk due to moisture being picked up and sprayed on this area by the tires. My left quarter had a small fiberglass patch on the leading corner that was replaced with metal. My right quarter had some patches welded by a previous owner. We ended up refabricating most of the panel for quality assurance. This was a timely and costly area on my JetLiner as you may surmise from photos.

Q: Are fuel tanks and senders being reproduced?
A: I don't know of any vendors offering fuel tanks or sending units at this time. I believe you can get the sending unit rebuilt by TriStar Radiator. The tank can be sent out and coated.

Q: I cannot find the fill or where to measure the fluid in the Hydra-Matic.
A: Hydra-Matic Transmission Refill is 10 Quarts. The level should be checked while engine is running. There's a manual available specifically for the Hydramatic engines which can be found through the H.E.T. Club or possible on eBay.
