The Altitude Ring

The Altitude Ring was used to determine the altitude of the sun.

This instrument was used in the 15th century.

In this edge on view, you can just make out the hole bored in the top third of the ash strip through which the sun shines. On the opposite, inside surface of the ring, a small image of the sun can be seen by the observer.
