Book Nine:  Shalya
 
Shalya succeeds Karna as the next general of the Kaurava Army.  In a 
single fight, he is killed by Judhishthir, while Sahadev kills Shakuni. 
The Kauravas are all but defeated.  Duryodhan is still alive along with 
three other warriors, Kripa, Aswatthaman, and Kritavarman.  He hides 
away in a lake where using special powers, he retreats under the water.
The Pandavas find him and Bhim challenges him to a duel with maces.  
Duryodhan comes out of the water and fights Bhim.  With urging from 
Krishna, Bhim unfairly strikes Duryodhan on the thigh and kicks him 
with his left foot.  Duryodhan is left wounded and cannot move.  He 
curses Krishna for urging Bhim to do it.  The Pandavas leave and 
Krishna heads toward Hastinapur to console Gandhari and Dhritarashtra. 
Duryodhan appoints Aswatthaman as the next general.
