Park Bench Sandbox
About us
It all started when my daughter asked, "Daddy, can you build me a
sandbox?" I replied back to her, "honey, you already have a sandbox."
My wife and I had been given one of those plastic turtle shaped sandboxes
from a neighbor of ours whose children had outgrown it. My daughter then
responded by saying, "My sandbox is too small for all my friends to play
with me in."

My search had begun to look for the perfect sandbox plans. I thought to
myself . . .How hard could that be? Surely someone out there must have
plans for a sandbox, large enough for about 6 children with a cover that
can be easily opened or closed to keep the elements and animals out. I
looked to numerous wood workers and parenting magazines. I even
searched the web . . . to no avail. Some interesting suggestions I found on
the web included: "We used landscape timbers . . . and place a sheet of
plywood on top"; "My husband built a box from logs . . .we place a tarp
over it at night." Of the plans I managed to find in wood workers
magazines, to my surprise, none made mention of a cover.

Having worked with wood as a hobby for the past 20+ years, and having
an Engineering background, I set out to design my own sandbox. This
sandbox had to meet all the fore mentioned criteria. And, having two small
children, under the age of 2 to manage, time and ease of building was also
an important factor. It took me several weeks before I finally came up
with my idea, developed the plans and started to build the box. It took me
approximately one week, working 1-2 hrs. each night after work, to put it
all together. I'll never forget the smile on my daughters face when I finally
showed her her new sandbox. I opened the cover to reveal the two seats
on either side. The first words from her mouth were: "parkbench . . .
those seats look just like a parkbench Daddy. And that's how our
sandbox got its name.
