Television

It may be the great wasteland, but I grew up there. I remember Playhouse 90 and the Arthur Godfrey Show.

Some of it is great, most of it is awful. The new trend in reality TV shows is really scary.  Where are we going? Does anyone remember The Running Man? or the game show in Time Bandits, Your Money or Your Life? is that where we are?

Some of the classics from TV's early days are wonderful (Sgt. Bilko, The Honeymooners), some are just plain painful (I Love Lucy). A precious few TV series are sublime works of art (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica), some are enjoyable (Friends, Gilmore Girls, Monk), some are just plain addictive (ER and Law and Order). Some, like VR5 and Firefly are lost treasures - their story arcs cut short by cancellation.

Some of my old favorites are The Monkees, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Colombo, Murphy Brown, The Saint, Secret Agent, The Prisoner, The Avengers and, of course, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Some of my current addictions are Battlestar Galactica, Monk, ER, Everwood, Gilmore Girls, Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal and Lost. I am an addict, aren't I?

I can't afford satellite TV, but I pay for it anyway. I have a very nice 27-inch flat screen TV, but I always drool over the  42-inch plasma screens. I have seen HDTV (in a lab at JPL back in 1997), and I can't wait. Well, actually I will wait...until it is more affordable.
