Wine Diary - May 2007: Danube-to-Rhine River Cruise

In May 2007 we took a two-week river cruise with Viking, starting from Budapest and going upstream on the Danube to the Danube-Main canal, then downstream on the Main and Rhine rivers. ending in Amsterdam. Wine was served on board with dinner, but the environment made it a bit difficult to get all the information for the wines we had.

One in particular was served as a small glass of dessert wine without any identification:
2001 Tokaji aszú 5 puttonyos: "aszú" refers to grapes with noble rot botrytis, and "puttonyos" refers to the level of sweetness, ranging up from three to six, based on an old-fashioned way of making this wine. Deep apricot color with lovely aroma, lots of apricot in the taste with just a bit too much acidity for balancing the sweetness; long, fairly complex taste. Price 4.70 euros for a 0.1 liter glass.
Rating: Very Good +

The other wines, with prices charged on the boat (unless otherwise noted), were:
2005 Szekszárdi Rajnai Rizling, List, Hungary
Dry, with a good deal more intensity and flavor than many dry rieslings, very good acidity, some oakiness, long taste. Eye-openingly good. Price 19 euros.
Rating: Very Good
2005 Grüner Veltliner, Nigl, Austria
I'm probably missing a good deal of information such as region and vineyard. The wine was dry, aromatic and fruity, with good acidity, no noticeable wood, moderate intensiy, with good length. Another fine bottle. Price 23 euros.
Rating: Very Good
2005 Mörwald Classic Sauvignon Blanc, Burgenland, Austria
Just a bit off-dry, sith moderate acidity, some body, a bit of floral character without any grassiness or wood; fairly long taste. Price 23 euros.
Rating: Good +
2006 Deidesheimer Riesling halbtrocken, Reichsrat von Buhl, Pfalz
Off-dry with good acidity, some floral riesling character, moderate intensity and length. Unlike many Pfalz wines, it did not have the fullness and lower acidity, nor the touch of apricot or spiciness. Price 21 euros.
Rating: Good +
2005 Kröver Paradies Riesling Kabinett halbtrocken, Bernd Hermes, M-S-R
Just off-dry, nice riesling character, fine acidity, depth with surprising spiciness and intensity, long taste. A welcome reminder that Kröv has better wine to offer than the well-known but insipid Kröver Nacktarsch. Price 21 euros.
Rating: Very Good
2006 Zweigelt Classique, Josef Pöckl, Mönchhof, Burgenland, Austria
Deep dark carmine color with purplish tones, lots of juicy dark fruit (blueberry), dry, good acidity, noticeable tannin, moderately long taste. Reminiscent of a concentrated grenache. Price 27.50 euros.
Rating: Good ++
1994 Rüdesheimer Bischofsberg Ehrenfelser Auslese, Johannes Prasser, Rheingau
Very deep golden color, lovely aroma, fine acidity; depth and complexity with some honey and peach, long taste; sweetness at Spätlese level. My first taste of an Ehrenfelser (cross of riesling and sylvaner) - if this is an indication, then it's a varietal to watch. It has certainly aged superbly over thirteen years. A 0.1 liter glass cost 2.50 euros at a tasting stand in the Market Square in Rüdesheim. The price for a 0.5 liter bottle was an astoundingly low 7.50 euros!
Rating: Very Good +
2004 Rüdesheimer Burgweg Riesling Kabinett, K. & M. (Karl & Martin) Siegfried, Rheingau
Still young, light golden color, riesling elegance with depth, superb acid balance, long taste. Seemed more Mosel- than Rheingau-like. Price 15.50 euros at the Stadt Frankfurt restaurant in Rüdesheim.
Rating: Very Good
1994 Rüdesheimer Bischofsberg Riesling Eiswein, K. & M. (Karl & Martin) Siegfried, Rheingau
Deep golden apricot color, honey and apricot of fine depth and complexity, superb balancing acidity, very long taste, glass-filling aroma. Price unknown but sure to be high (100 euros?) - tasted through the generosity of tablemates at the Stadt Frankfurt restaurant.
Rating: Excellent

Finally, not a wine, but a liquor discovery: Bokma Oude Friesche Genever. Genever is the Dutch ancestor of British gin and, in the version tasted, something to be sipped and savored rather than used in mixed drinks. It was very smooth and elegant, with light, perfectly balanced aromatics, so that none dominated. As best as I could read the Dutch on the label, it means old Genever from Friesia.
