Antietam Trip Report from September 17, 2008
by Tom Shay (Cressona, PA)

I spent the battle's anniversary on a full day hike with NPS Rangers Keith Snyder, Brian Baracz, and Mike Gamble.
While most of the hiking covered material I've posted in previous reports,  I will provide details on a few new items.

We began at 7 AM with a walk around The Cornfield section. Here are two photos:

(Above) The Cornfield. Looking north at dawn (from Rebel perspective)

(Above) Rangers used plenty of diaries and letters to describe the brutal action in The Cornfield.

15th MASS Monument

(ABOVE) We stopped at 15th MASS monument. Rangers provided story of Justus Wellington
and displayed his photo next to his name on the monument.

Mary Locher barn

(ABOVE) This is one of my older photos of Locher Farm's barn. The foundation is original .

(ABOVE) The barn's walls and roof have now been removed.
Locher cabin can be seen in background.

(ABOVE) Another view of the barn foundation (Hauser Ridge is in background).

(ABOVE) Remnants of the barn were placed just west of the foundation.
