For most sources used, the proper format to use in general is as follows:

Authors Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article." Title of Complete Work (Book).

        Volume number (if any). [Type of Resource (if online)].  Place published:

       Publisher, Date Published, Page numbers used.

 

Note:

• After the first line, indent each line 5 spaces.
• If there is more than one author, list the names in the order they appear.   However, only the first author is listed with their last name first.
• Be careful to use proper punctuation. (periods, quotation marks, underlining, colons, commas, etc.)
• If typed, the title of the complete work can be italicized instead of underlined.

Specific examples of formats:

• Encyclopedia and Reference books (familiar / general types)
  • Author’s last name, first name. "Article Title." Title of Book. Edition, Year.

• Nonfiction (i.e. Specialized Reference books, text book, etc. )

  • Author’s last name, first name. "Article Title." Title of Book. Volume or edition

    information if any. Place Published: Publisher, Date. Page(s)

• Journal Article

  • Author’s last name, first name. "Article Title." Title of Journal. Volume number

    if any. (Year): Page(s)

• Periodical or Magazine

  • Author’s last name, first name. "Title of Article." Title of Periodical or Magazine.

    Date: Page(s).

• Newspaper Article

  • Author’s last name, first name. "Title of Article." Title of Newspaper.  Date,

    edition:  Page(s).

• Interview

  • Last name, first name of person interviewed. Type of interview (personal, telephone,

    video conference, etc.). Date of interview.

• Filmstrip, Slide Program, and Videotapes
  • Title. Director or Producer. Type of resource. Distributor, Year.

• TV or Radio

  • "Title of Show or Segment." Credit(s) (i.e. reported by). Title of Program.   Name of 

    Network. Call letters, City of Local Station, Broadcast Date.

• Reference source on CD-ROM (or diskette)

  • Author’s last name, first name. "Article Title." Title of CD ROM. Version or edition

    Information if any. Series name if any. [Type of resource]. Place Published:

    Publisher, Date.

• Online Sources (web sites, e-mail, etc.) include all of the following that are known

  • Author’s last name, first name. "Title of page or article." Name of Data Base or

    Project.  Name of Organization posted by. Date web site was posted. [type of resource]:  Electronic address or URL. Date web site was visited.
