- Use this worksheet to summarize the results and conclusions of the experiment.
- It is important to that your abstract follow all of the following guidelines.
- ABSTRACT- general guidelines
- The main focus of the abstract is the results and conclusion of the project.
- The abstract must fit on one page, be less than 250 words and be written in paragraph
form.
- The abstract must be written in past tense and in the 3rd person. (Do not
use I, you, we, etc.)
- The abstract must be located in the front lower left corner of "table top
type" display boards or on the front left side at table height of "floor
type" display boards.
- At the science fair, have several copies of the abstract available for judges.
- HEADING OF ABSTRACT
- The first line MUST have a complete title of the project. This should be
the same exact title that will be put on the display board. It should be written in all
capital letters.
- The second line MUST have the students last name, first name, middle initial
(if used).
- The third line MUST have the name of the regional science fair and category of
project.
-
- BODY OF ABSTRACT- In paragraph form, the abstract MUST then summarize
the project by explaining the following:
- PURPOSE - The purpose is a statement about what you are attempting to find
out by doing the experiment. A good format is to start out with "The purpose of my
project is answer the question . . . " and then restate the problem.
- HYPOTHESIS - The hypothesis should restate the problem and predict an
answer to that question. This predicted answer is not a random guess but an educated
scientific guess which is based on information learned from your research.
- PROCEDURE - The procedure is the step-by-step description of how to
perform the experiment. Briefly explain the procedure for the abstract by highlighting
which constants were kept the same, what was measured, how many trials were repeated and
important safety precautions.
- RESULTS: The results should interpret what the graphs show using words and
numbers. The results should then use this information to explain the answer to the project
question (problem).
- CONCLUSION: The conclusion should compare your hypothesis and results
(restate your hypothesis, state if correct and state the numbers from the results that
support your conclusion).
