Rain Anomalies
According to many reports, not all rain that falls is plain old water. Colored rain is a well-documented phenomenon. Colored rain is known to result from particles floating in the air which are captured by the precipitation. When desert dust or sediment is kicked up by windstorms and travels far from its source, red rain falls. Red rain is rather ominous due to its resemblance to blood. There have actually been a few historic reports of real flesh and blood falls but none are well substantiated. Black rain is caused by volcanic ash clouds or soot particles in the air from fires or fuel burning. Yellow-tinted rain is a result of pollen entrained in the drops.
There are many recorded incidents of showers of animal, plant, and inorganic materials – the list of substances that fall to earth from the sky is long and ridiculous. Animal, plant and miscellaneous "showers" can sometimes be traced to a local source disturbed by strong updrafts. The exact reason for the large amount of all the same type of material falling in one place is unknown.
Other rain curiosities include precipitation from a cloudless sky, and "cloudbursts" which are noted to drop unbelievable volumes of rain in a local area in a very short period of time. None of these phenomena are easily explained by weather scientists. Our atmosphere still holds mysteries to be solved.
