JOSEPH LEECH is the son of JOHN LEECH and ELEANOR McHENRY .

Generation No. 4

5.  JOSEPH LEECH (JOHN3, JOHN2, DAVID1, UNKNOWN0) was born August 03, 1798, probably in what is now Hart County, KY, but possibly in South Carolina (Spartanburg County) or even North Carolina, and died March 13, 1872 in Union Township, Hardin County Iowa, He is buried in Sheppard Cemetery northwest of Union, Iowa (also in Union Township, Hardin County). age 73y 7m 10da. He married CELIA TURPIN 1822 in Hart County Kentucky.  She is the daughter of NATHAN TURPIN and SARAH JOHNSON. She was born 26 Aug 1808 in Ky, and died March 12, 1872 in Union Township, Hardin Co. IA, also buried Sheppard cem. NW of Union ..  The date of death on her tombstone is August 26, 1874.

Who is MALINDA WISEMAN?

Notes on place of birth for Joseph Leech:

While the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses all record Joseph Leech's place of birth as Kentucky, in the 1880 and 1900 censuses his children their father's place of birth as North Carolina 6 times and Kentucky 3 times.  Since Nathan and Polly are in the same household in 1900, you could discount one of their North Carolina answers.  I think it most likely that Joseph was born in what is now Hart County, Kentucky, but his family hadn't been there for more than a handful of years.  It's possible that some of the North Carolina answers were actually given to the census taker as "Carolina".  In the southeastern townships of Hardin County, Iowa were many Quakers from North Carolina.  This can't be used to explain the 1880 census answers of North Carolina for his sons JOHN BEAUCAMP and SIMEON B LEECH.  It could also be that JOSEPH's parents crossed the Carolina border and lived for a few years in North Carolina before crossing the Appalachians.  It's just an odd answer given everything else we know.  See notes on place of birth under Henry Leech and Tabitha Leech.

Children of JOSEPH LEECH and CELIA TURPIN are:

29. i.  JOHN BEAUCAMP LEECH , b. September 19, 1823, Hart County KY.
ii. GIRL LEECH b.  about 1824.  See 1840 Census below.  Possible error in census.
30. iii.  NATHAN TURPIN LEECH , b. August 06, 1826, Hart County KY.
31. iv.  MARY H. LEECH ("POLLY") , b. July 25, 1827, Hart County KY.
32. v.  JAMES T. LEECH , b. June 1828, Hart County KY.
vi.  JOSEPH F. LEECH, b. 1832, Hart County KY.; d. before 1850 (I think the family bible record for a death Sep 2 1843 may actually be his).
33. vii.  SIMEON B. LEECH , b. August 11, 1834, Hart Co Ky.
viii.  LILLIE ANN LEECH, b. August 04, 1839, Hart Co. KY; d. November 29, 1852, Hart Co. Ky (Gorin, Hart Co. Vital Stats); also have D: sept 2, 1843 bible record.

They probably had other children who died in infancy.

Who is MALINDA WISEMAN?

Malinda Wiseman Died Dec 16 187?, according to her tombstone in the Sheppard Cemetery, Union Township, Hardin Co., KY.  She was 58 years old   She was 58 according to the 1870 census of Hardin County, IA.  So I assume she was born in the first half of 1812.

As Charlotte Mazurik points out, Malinda Wiseman may be the sister of JOSEPH LEECH:  "She is buried next to Joseph and Celia Leech. Their stones are all of the same design and have been broken and repaired by a Paula Burgess."

I found MALINDA WISEMAN in the 1860 census of Miller County, Missouri: she is the wife of ALBERT G. WISEMAN. The JOHN C. REYNOLDS in their household is a good match for the JOHN C. REYNOLDS in the household of MALINDA REYNOLDS in the 1850 census: .a LOUISA REYNOLDS is also in this household.  See the 1850 Census of Barren County, KY , , or household 264/farm 272 , MALINDA REYNOLDS is 37 (born in VA) and head of household; next in the listing is LOUISA REYNOLDS, age 16 (born KY).  Also, the household following ALBERT G. WISEMAN in the 1860 census is McHENRY LIGHT. (McHENRY LIGHT is the son of JACOB and SARAH LEECH LIGHT, and therefore, JOSEPH LEECH's nephew.) McHENRY LIGHT's wife ELIZA J. matches the ELIZA J. REYNOLDS in the 1850 household of MALINDA REYNOLDS. McHENRY LIGHT appears on page 512 of the 1870 Census of Hardin County, IA; MALINDA WISEMAN appears on page 513. From this we can piece together her movements:

She marries UNKNOWN REYNOLDS in the early 1830s.

UNKNOWN REYNOLDS dies in the mid-1840s

Her daughter LOUISA REYNOLDS marries JAMES T. LEECH around 1851.

Her daughter ELIZA J. REYNOLDS marries McHENRY LIGHT (first cousin to JAMES T. LEECH) around 1856

She moves to KANSAS with her daughter ELIZA and most of the LIGHTS shortly after that.

She probably marries ALBERT G. WISEMAN in KANSAS.

When the LIGHTs move from KANSAS to MISSOURI, she, ALBERT, McHENRY and ELIZA return to MILLER County, while the rest of the LIGHTs relocate in CEDAR County.

After ALBERT G. WISEMAN dies, MALINDA, McHENRY and ELIZA join her daughter and her in-laws in Hardin County, IA.
