MARY ELIZABETH GILL was born Feb 26, 1834 in Hart Co., KY, and died Jan 26, 1911, Guthrie, Todd Co., KY. Both are probably buried in Hermon Cemetery, Hermon, Todd County KY, but their graves are not marked.

Louisville"
14. 23 Aug 1865, Discharged, Louisville,
KY.
Other military service: private, Co. D, 12th Kentucky Cavalry. I need to write for his service record in this regiment. This is where he may have spent much of 1865.
1. 25 Jul 1863 - Enrolled, Company D, 12th Kentucky Cavalry (U. S. A.)
This date could be in error. The transfer from Co. H to Co. K, 11th Kentucky Cavalry in this same source is given as 16 Jun 1863, but the actual date from his service record is clearly 1865. This date might also be 1865. It could be that the military delayed his discharge because he needed medical attention. I do not have his service records for Co. D, 12th Kentucky Cavalry.
Later dates
1. 21 Jan 1878. Filed for
invalid pension. Residence, Caverna, Hart County, KY.
2. 1880 - Census, Montgomery District,
Trigg County, KY.
3. 1884 - Moves to Todd County, KY.
4. 1897 and 1898. Filed for invalid
pension. Residence, Gill's Station, Todd County,
KY.
Affidavit from William Moore and W M Keeling, both of Elkton, KY, given 1 day of July A. D. one thousand eight hundred and 97:
"That they have been well and personally acquainted with Simeon B Leech for 10 and 12 years respectively, and that we know that Simeon B Leech of Co H 11 and Co D 12 Regment u s cal Ky. they further state that he is a suffer of wearation and Kidnee trimbalet of whitch Render him total disabled to do anything for him self of or family he need the Constan aid of som one to waite on him the witnesses further state in the apimion that said Simeon B Leech is a destuited Condiction and are Sufferin for the Need of money to help him in his Suffrin Condition.
Witnesses furth state Know the facties to which they testify by being a Close Neigbor and Seeing Said Simeon B. Leach evry week."
Affidavit from J C Russell, Elkton, given 22nd day of June 1898:
"I have known S. B. Leach from the time he came to Todd County Ky in the year 1884 and Know that he has from 1884 to present been disabled by reason of Chronic Diarrhea, Piles and disease of the Rectum and disease of the eyes, he has lived very near during the time. Have seen him very often every year, and that he has during each and every year since 1884 been by reason of his Condition unable to do any manual labor."
2nd Affidavit from Charles K. Lewis, Elkton, given the same day, is almost identical.
3rd Affidavit from H. C. Laird, Cave City, KY, and R. T. Hogan, Horse Cave, KY. (I believe these men may be married MARY ELIZABETH GILL's sisters or first cousins: H. C. LAIRD is buried in the Gill Cemetery near Horse Cave, KY.). Dated 17th day of June, 1898.
"We H. C. Laird and R. T. Hogan having know Simeon B Leach since the time of his discharge from the service up to the year 1884 state that he has been disabled by reason of Chronic Diarrhea, Piles and disease of Rectum and Disease of the Eyes. during Each and every year since the date of his discharge up to the year 1884, We were neighbors of Simeon B Leach from his discharge from the service to the year 1884 and being with him every day or two Know his disability to be as stated above."
Unlike his parents, sister and 3 surviving brothers, SIMEON B. LEECH remained in Hart County in the late 1850s. The GILLs and LEECHs lived in the same area in the 1840 and 1850 censuses, and his wife's kin can be found in Hart County censuses through 1900. In 1870 he is on a farm near Horse Cave, KY, apparently close to the line of the Louisville and Nashville, as there were railroad men boarding at a neighboring farm. The value of his estate in 1870 is only $100, which suggests that he was a tenant farmer and not a landowner. Simeon, Mary and 7 children appear in the Montgomery District of Trigg County, in the 1880 census, although one of the affidavits in his pension papers states that he lived in Hart County until 1884. He states that he moved to Todd County, KY in 1884, and this date appears to be reasonably accurate given that his children married residents of Christian and Todd Counties beginning around 1886. In the 1900 census, he is a "share tenant" near Hadensville, KY, either on the farm of J T HALAND but (more likely) on the farm of JOEL NELSON FOX, near the Elk Fork of the Red River, which roughly equidistant from Elkton, Hermon, and Allensville, KY. JOEL NELSON FOX is the uncle of the REBECCA FOX who married WILLIAM CLAUDE LEECH. His name is mistranscribed in the 1900 Census as C N Fox, but he is the father of TOM and NORMAN. (JOEL NELSON FOX did have a brother, CLEMENT NEWTON FOX, but his children had different names.)
Children of SIMEON B. LEECH and Mary Elizabeth GILL are:
128. i.
JOHN WILLIAM LEECH
, b. Sep 10, 1855, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY.
129. ii.
JOSEPH LEECH ("Joe")
, b. Dec 16, 1857, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY.
130. iii.
EMILY J. LEECH,
b. 1860/1, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY .
131. iv.
SARAH
LEECH ("Sallie") , b. Aug
14 1865, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY.
132 v.
JAMES
WILSON LEECH (J W) , b. Mar 12, 1869
, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY.
133. vi.
ALBERT R.
LEECH ("Allie" or ALPHONSO) , b. Apr
28 1873, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY.
vii.
ANNA E LEECH, b. Mar 17 1877, Horse Cave, Hart Co.,
KY. Still alive in 1900, in her parents household.
Not found after that.
viii. One other child died, probably
before 1880 (source, 1900 census).
Note: None of these children appear in the Marriage Books for Todd County, KY. Since his wife was a native of Hart County, KY, I thought JOHN WILLIAM LEECH might have married in Hart County, in which case his marriage record would have burned in the courthouse fire of January, 1928. I found his wife ELDORA CLARK in the 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Hart County, but she appears in Christian County, KY (Pembroke) in the 1880 Census. Emily may have been married in Christian County, KY. After about 1905, when the LEECHes moved to Guthrie, KY, the Montgomery County, TN courthouse could have been more convenient for them to go to than the Todd County, KY, courthouse in Elkton. However, prior to that move, they lived about 6 miles from Elkton, which is the Todd County seat. Perhaps Tennessee didn't have as many impediments to their marriages as did Kentucky..

Generation No. 6
128. JOHN WILLIAM LEECH , (SIMEON B5, JOSEPH4, JOHN3, JOHN2, DAVID1, UNKNOWN0) b. Sep 10, 1855, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY; died Mar. 20, 1934, Guthrie, Todd Co., KY, buried Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY. Married Dora (Eldora) Belle CLARK, daughter of Isaac CLARK and Hannah Mary KESSINGER. She was born Mar. 14, 1856, Hart Co., KY, probably on the north side of the Green River somewhere near Munfordville, KY, and died Mar. 5, 1932, Guthrie, Todd Co., KY. Also buried in Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY. Found in 1930 Census, but not yet found in 1910 or 1920.
More about JOHN WILLIAM LEECH:
Occupation: House Carpenter (1900
census), Contractor (on death certificate). My Dad
recalls him working on the roof of a barn; this would
probably have been in the summer of 1931, as his wife was still
alive at the time.
Children of JOHN WILLIAM LEECH and DORA BELLE CLARK are:
i.
WILLIAM CLAUDE LEECH, born Jan 7, 1888,
Todd Co., KY. Last found
1920. Died May 24, 1928, of lobar pneumonia, Guthrie,
Todd County, KY. Buried in Section 4, Highland Cemetery,
Guthrie, KY. He married REBECCA LYLE FOX, daughter of BENJAMIN
FRANKLIN FOX and
MINNIE
JOSEPHINE ("Josie") MOORE
. REBECCA was born 9 Jul 1894, and died December
6, 1971 in Kentucky, although she moved to Washington, DC
about1931 and resided in Fairfax County, VA (Alexandria, VA mailing
address) at the time of her death. She is buried next
to her husband; the birthdate on her tombstone (10 Jul 1894)
is a day late. CLAUDE LEECH is a tenant on the farm of
C N FOX in 1910 (Hadensville, KY). He later worked as a
switchman on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (see 1920
census). The SSDI has REBECCA FOX LEECH's birthdate
as July 9, 1895: this is certainly right as far as the
month and day are concerned. The 1900 census has her born July,
1894. Claude Leech was roughly 5' 10 1/2", of medium build,
with slate-gray eyes and light to medium brown hair.
ii.
MARY MAUDE LEECH, born 18 May 1890 (Dec 1889
according to 1900 Census), Todd Co., KY. Died November
11, 1961, Todd Co., KY. She married (1) HENDERSON
SANFORD, b. 1883/4 KY, in 1908 or 1909, (2) SAMUEL WALKER
MORRIS. He was born 16 Jun 1887 in Tennessee, and died 23
Mar 1961, Todd County, KY. They resided in Clarksville, TN in
1928. Last found 1930. They are
buried next to each other in Section 1, Highland Cemetery, Guthrie,
KY.
iii.
JOHN GILL ("JOHNNIE") LEECH. Born
Nov 6 1893, Todd Co., KY. He married Daisy UNKNOWN.
Johnnie Leech was significantly taller than his brother
Claude, possibly 6' 3" or 6' 4", of slender build with fair
hair and a fair complexion. He was drafted during World
War I. After the war, he moved to Colorado, but apparently
returned to western Kentucky around 1931. He was informant
for his father's death certificate in 1934. He died
March 14, 1951 of a coronary occlusion, at his home, 210 W. 13th
St., Hopkinsville, Christian County, KY. At the time of his
death, he was married and was working as an electrical appliance
salesman. He was buried March 15, 1951 in Highland Cemetery,
Guthrie, KY.
iv.
BERTHA M. LEECH. She was born August 8, 1895
(Tombstone) , Todd Co., KY, and died Dec 20, 1913 of peritonitis
resulting from childbirth in Guthrie, Todd Co., KY.
Buried in Section 2, Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY, next
to her uncle, James W. Leech. Date of birth on her Death
Certificate (May 1, 1895) is probably wrong, but her tombstone
and her Death Certificate agree on her date of death.
One child: BENJAMIN L. LEACH, b. 13 Dec 1913, d. May 1975,
APO NY (ZIP 09132).
v.
CLYDE FOSTER LEECH, born Jan 17, 1898, Todd Co., KY, and
died Oct. 14, 1918 in Guthrie, Todd Co., KY. Buried Highland
Cemetery, Guthrie, KY. Believed to be buried with his parents.
vi. One other child died before the 1900
census.

immediately after that of S. B. LEECH. Not yet found in

Elmer Sanford in SSDI (b. 12 Nov 1916, d. 01 Jun 1994 (Last Residence:
Palmyra, Montgomery County, TN)
Lonnie Sanford in SSDI (b. 15 May 1920, d. 17 Oct 1988, Jefferson County,
KY (Last Residence: Shepherdsville, Bullitt County, KY)
JOHN WILLIAM LEECH bought a group of four plots in Highland Cemetery. According to Billy Cook and his dowsing rods, these all contain bodies, and we assumed that JOHN, DORA, BERTHA, and CLYDE were buried in them. However, BERTHA is buried in a different set of plots along with JAMES WILSON LEECH and two of this wives. Given that JOHN GILL LEECH is buried in Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY, and his grave has not been marked, he is the most likely fourth burial in that set of graves.
129. JOSEPH LEECH ("Joe") (SIMEON B5, JOSEPH4, JOHN3, JOHN2, DAVID1, UNKNOWN0) , b. Dec 16, 1857, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY, died May 15, 1938, Todd Co., KY. He is buried in Hermon Cemetery, Hermon, Todd Co., KY. Joseph LEECH may well have been left-handed (from his signature on his 2nd wife's death certificate). Found in 1920.
JOSEPH LEECH married RACHEL E. UNKNOWN. She is buried in Section B of Glenwood Cemetery, Elkton, Todd County, KY ("Rachel E. wife of Joseph LEECH, Born Feb. 24, 1861, Died Jan. 3, 1888.") There's no evidence of any children by this first marriage.
JOSEPH LEECH married (1888/9) ALICE MORRIS, daughter of R. A. MORRIS and Elizabeth MOORE of Christian Co., KY. ALICE MORRIS was born Jan 8, 1868, and died Apr 7, 1917 (of pellagra). Children of JOSEPH LEECH AND ALICE MORRIS include:
i.
Leslie Lee LEECH, born Feb 11, 1893, Todd Co., KY.
Died Apr 10, 1965, Guthrie, Todd Co., KY. He
is buried in Hermon Cemetery, Hermon, Todd County, KY.
He married MADALINE ELIZABETH ("LIZZIE") JOLLY,
Feb 25 1912, Todd Co., KY. She is the daughter
of Wiley J. and
Margaret JOLLY , born November 8, 1884,
near Elkton, Todd County, KY. She died in Kentucky,
April 25, 1972, last residence, Elkton, KY, and is buried
in Section 2, Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, Todd County, KY.
Found in 1930.
ii. One other child was born and
died prior to the 1900 census.
iii.
Nellie Mae LEECH, born 16 Jan 1900, died 6 Jan 1991.
Buried Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY. She married
WILLIAM GUY ESCUE, b. 7 Jul 1900, d. 27 Mar 1965.
Also buried Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY. WILLIAM GUY
ESCUE appears to be the son of BARKER EVAN and CLARA BELLE ESCUE.
BARKER EVAN ESCUE was a medical doctor.
iv. One other child was born after
the 1900 census and died prior to the 1910 census.

130. EMILY J LEECH
(SIMEON B5, JOSEPH4, JOHN3, JOHN2, DAVID1, UNKNOWN0)
b. 1860/1, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY She married
UNKNOWN BARNES (see reference 4 below), and both she and
her husband died before the 1900 census.
Children of EMILY LEECH and UNKNOWN BARNES include:
i. WILLIAM J. BARNES, born Nov 1883. In household of S B LEECH, 1900 Census (born Tennessee). In household of THOMAS MARSHAL, 1900 Census (born Kentucky). Matches the WILLIAM BARNES in the 1920 Census, Kentucky State Penitentiary, Eddyville, Lyon County, KY.
Sources:
(1) 1870 Census of Hart County, KY
(backlink to Simeon B. LEECH);
(2) 1880 Census of Trigg County, KY(backlink
to Simeon B. LEECH);
(3) 1900 Census of Todd County (backlink
to Simeon B. LEECH). William J. Barnes (grandson)
is in the household of S B and Mary E Leech.
(4) BARNES, C. M. married LEACH, E. J.,
23 Mar 1882, Christian County, KY. This could be them.
EMILY was not married in 1880, and her son was born in 1883.
So the date looks good. Christian County borders Trigg
County on the west, and Todd County on the east.
(5) A C. M. BARNES appears in the 1880 Census
of Kentucky, Christian County, E D 4, Hopkinsville, p.
70D. He is white, age 29, widowed, and the only member
of his household. It's possible that he's the
son of Cullen and Rebecca Barnes, ages 54 and 57, who are
2 of the 3 members of the next household in that census.
131. SARAH L LEECH ("Sallie") , (SIMEON B5, JOSEPH4, JOHN3, JOHN2, DAVID1, UNKNOWN0) b. Aug 14 1865, Horse Cave, Hart Co., KY. She married THOMAS MARSHALL, who was born April 1873 and died about 1902. She is not the Sarah A. Marshall who died in Logan County, KY, 19 Apr 1936. However, she apparently died before her son PAT LEE MARSHALL (20 Sep 1937). Found in 1930 Census.
Children of SARAH ("Sallie") LEECH and THOMAS MARSHALL include:
i. one child died before the 1900 census.
ii. ALBERT MARSHALL ("Big Albert")
b. 10 Aug 1895, d. 15 Feb 1953. CPL CO C 70 Engineers
WWI. He married Rubye HOWELL, daughter of
JOSEPH T. HOWELL and ADA CHERRY.
She was born 20 Sep 1900 in TN, and died 25 Nov 1983.
They and their son Albert S. Marshall ("Little Albert")
are buried in Section 4 of Highland Cemetery, Guthrie, KY.
Found
in 1930.
iii. PAT LEE MARSHALL (son) b. 1899,
d. 29 Sep 1937, Guthrie, KY. Not married as of 1920.
Occupation: baggage agent (1920 census).
Found in 1930.
iv. ELIZABETH ("LIZZIE") MARSHALL b. 1901.
Not married as of 1920. Apparently dead by 1937.
Last found
in 1920.
