Our Savior's Lutheran School Preschool is an early learning program for children ages 3 through the year before Kindergarten. It exists as a service for families who desire up to a five-day early learning experience for their children. The Preschool program strives to foster the development of the young child through attention to his spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, and physical needs, integrating all these aspects of learning throughout the program. A scriptural viewpoint permeates all learning experiences. The program promotes a child's active learning by offering a variety of developmentally appropriate activities with which the child can become involved. The daily routine offers a balance of these child-initiated opportunities and teacher-directed activities. While learning activities are not compartmentalized, specific learning goals are established in each of the following areas. |
Learning Goals
Spiritual Children will learn of Jesus, their Savior, and they will learn stories and teachings of Scripture. Effort is made to help the child to understand sin and our need of forgiveness. We teach clearly that this forgiveness is won for us totally and completely by Jesus Christ and that our thanks to God is demonstrated in the way we live our lives and in sharing this good news with others.
Social/Emotional Social skills to be developed include the child's ability to make plans and choices; participate in group routines; increase in sensitivity to the feelings, interests, and needs of others; and learn to deal with conflict.
Intellectual In the area of developing the child's intellect, language and literacy will be enhanced by having fun with language --- listening to stories and poems, making up stories and rhymes; and participating in sharing times, role playing, and enacting Bible stories. Math skills are supported through many activities dealing with classification, sequencing, counting, and experimenting with spatial relations.
Physical Large and fine motor skills are integrated into all activities, but are especially developed by art activities, work with blocks and other manipulatives, sand and water play, sorting, classifying, counting, and working mazes and puzzles. Children will be given practice with cutting and coloring so that they can develop moderate control with these activities.
Preschoolers sing at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church Sunday service several times during the year. They also have a part in the annual special Christmas Eve service.
