Straight flight (Video) My Experience: A common mistake is that the pilot will see only the INBOARD wing TIP, not the underside of the wing. If you see only the inboard wing tip, the plane is not level, not parallel to the ground. You need to see the bottom of the wing as the plane is much higher than your head - if you flew at the same level as your eyes, you would expect to see only the inboard wing tip - but you are much higher.. see the bottom of the wing. 1/2 Reverse Cuban 8 (Video) My Experience: ALL patterns consist of straight lines, angles (30/45/60 degrees), loops and part loops. You ALWAYS want a roll in the center of a line. Technical: Half Reverse Cuban Eight. Model pulls up and executes one-eighth (1/8) inside loop to 45 degrees, hesitates, does one-half (1/2) roll, hesitates, then performs five-eighths (5/8) inside loop back to level flight in opposite direction as entry.
Downgrades: Straight Flight Out, 1/2 Reverse Cuban 8, Straight Flight Back (Video) My Experience: Setting up for any sequence is very important, if you are set up wrong, your sequence will have corrections in it, causing downgrades. Make sure your wings are level in any sequence before you start. Technical: Straight Flight Out. The model must be brought exactly parallel to the flight path and flown in an absolutely straight and level path for a distance of approximately 100 meters centered on the judges before starting the Half Reverse Cuban Eight. (Distance does not have to be accurate.)
Downgrades: Loops (Video) My experience: Most every pilot makes ovals in the sky, not loops. A perfect circle is very hard to draw, much less fly.. practice drawing circles on paper, then go fly a loop.. you will see the difference. Technical: Inside Loops (any number). Model pulls up and executes perscribed number of consecutive loops; all loops shall be round and superimposed.
Downgrades: 1/2 Cuban 8 (Video) My experience: Similar to the 1/2 reverse Cuban 8, still focusing on the nice loop radius and the 45 degree down line with the roll in the MIDDLE of the down line. Technical: Half Cuban Eight: Model pulls up and executes five-eighths (5/8) inside loop, when at 45 degrees model hesitates, does one-half (1/2) roll, hesitates, then performs one-eighth (1/8) inside loop to recover in level flight.
Downgrades: 4 Point Roll (Video) My experience: Major deductions in any roll will be lifting the nose before the roll and roll rate not consistant - also change in direction - pull to belly or canopy. The correct way (maybe the only way) to do the 4-point roll is to use rudder at each point.. when I learned this I'd say, for each point, Rudder, Out, Rudder, Out for 1st point, 2nd point, 3rd point, 4th point. Technical: Four-Point Roll. Model rolls through 360 degrees, hesitating at each 90 degree point; at each hesitation wings are parallel or vertical to the horizon. Center is middle of inverted flight.
Downgrades: Immelemenn Turn (Video) My Experience: Common mistakes here, rolling to soon at the top of the loop.. you need to be inverted and PARALLEL with the ground before the roll. If you are not using rudder at the top to keep the plane horizontal, the plane will drop off and you will loose altitude. Technical: Immelmann Turn. The model starts the Immelmann flying straight and level, pulls up into one-half (1/2) loop immediately followed by one-half (1/2) roll and finishes flying straight and level exactly 180 degrees from the heading at entry.
Downgrades: Split S (Video):Similar mistakes to the Imm turn, you do an aileron only roll, the plane falls off into the loop. You want to use rudder at the top to keep the plane horizontal, then start the 1/2 loop. Technical: Split “S.” Model performs one-half (1/2) roll in level flight then immediately executes one-half inside loop to level flight in opposite direction as entry.
Downgrades: 1 Horizontal Roll (Video):A common mistake is lifting the nose before the roll or starting the roll climbing - you need to start in straight level flight. Also, keep the roll rate constant. The roll rate does not need to be specific speed (I personally think a slower roll rate looks better), but keep the roll rate constant. Technical: One (1) Horizontal Roll. Model rolls at a uniform rate through one (1) complete revolution in either direction. Center is inverted portion of maneuver.
Downgrades: Advanced Pattern (Video) takeoff, procedure turn, trim pass, turn-around, in-the-box, reverse Cuban 8, stall turn, slow roll, 1/2 square loop with 2 of 4 point, outside square loop with 1/2 rolls in first and 3rd legs |
