November 1998: Playing Harmonics- Unit 1

Harmonics are sounds that are achieved by setting into vibration only the upper half of a string which creates a note that sounds one octave higher than the tuned pitch of the string. The quality of this sound is more `bell-like` than the normal tone of a plucked string, providing it is executed properly.

To create a harmonic it is necessary to pluck the string while resting a part of the hand on the centerpoint of it ("cut" the string). Then, at the moment of pluck the entire hand must release contact with the string thus allowing it to vibrate freely - not an easy task.

There are two ways to "cut" the string. To understand the first technique turn your left hand so the palm faces you. The right side shall be called the "heel" of the hand. Look at the long middle line on the palm (I believe this is called the life line). Place the heel of the hand, at approximately the base of the life line, on a string at its midpoint.

While holding that position place your thumb, pointing upward, on the string using the outer side of the fingerpad. Pluck and lift away from the string immediately.

To understand the second technique open your left hand with all fingers pointing upward and face the palm to your right. Your thumb should be facing you. Run your right index finger downward along the outer edge of your thumb to its base. There you will feel a bony area. Place that part of the hand on the string at its midpoint. With the fingers pointed upward pluck the string using the outer edge of the thumb pad and release immediately.

No matter which technique you use it will take some experimenting to achieve the harmonic sound. First of all you must find the actual midpoint of the string (the "sweet spot"). Reposition the hand higher or lower until you can execute a good quality sound. Then try to locate that positon consistently. Secondly, never linger on the string after you have plucked it . If you do not release cleanly you will only achieve a dull plunking sound because the string is muffled by the touch of the hand.
