The
night that Jagger refused to throw his boxing match, when he and Karen
went on the run from Sonny, Sonny went looking for them at Kelly's where
Jagger lived. Luckily for Jagger, his ex-girlfriend Brenda Barrett was
near the stairs when Sonny and his men entered Kelly's. She managed
to get upstairs, warn Jagger and Karen, and help facilitate their escape,
before Sonny came up to get them. When Sonny entered Jagger's room,
he found a beautiful brunette on the bed...painting her toe nails. After
she and the handsome mobster traded some sexy repartee, Brenda cooly
told Sonny she was looking for Jagger herself. Soon, Brenda and Sonny
ran into each other again, on the docks. Sonny had just concluded a
meeting with Luke Spencer, when Brenda showed up carrying all her worldly
possessions. Sonny rushed to help her, but Brenda was less than happy
to see him, and didn't want his help. Sonny tried to find out where
she was going, but all he managed to get out of her was her name. Brenda
hurried off, not wanting to spend too much time with the dangerous man
who had threatened her friends. But Sonny stared after her, and we knew
we hadn't seen the last of that pair. Brenda next spoke with Sonny sooner
than she probably wanted to. Jagger had been arrested for the murder
of Ray Conway...the man who molested Karen as a child. Karen and Brenda
tried to figure out who really committed the crime. When Sonny walked
into Kelly's for another meeting with Luke, Brenda figured they'd found
their man. Karen quickly left the restaurant, leaving Brenda to grill
Sonny. Sonny was both irritated and impressed with Brenda's nerve. He
told her he had nothing to do with killing Ray, or framing Jagger...but
that he wished he'd thought of it. Sonny promised Brenda they'd continue
to get to know each other.
Meanwhile,
things were heating up on the business front. Sonny and Luke were up
to their eyeballs in a plan to break their boss, Frank Smith, out of
prison. After several dangerous assignments, all the necessary people
and preparations were in place. Before the night in question arrived,
Sonny and Brenda met up at a car dealership. Heavy flirting ensued,
and soon after they went on their first date: dinner at the PC Grille.
Sonny did his best to paint himself as an irresistible, dangerous guy
(which he is!), knowing Brenda wouldn't be able to resist him (who could?)
Running into Brenda at Kelly's the next day, Sonny quickly asked her
out for a second date. Brenda refused, and told Sonny he was too much
for her to handle. She changed her mind though, and agreed to see him
again. But, when Brenda realized that Sonny was taking her to his place
for dinner, she got scared and asked him to take her home. He did, but
not until after some serious kissing, both in, and out of the car. Frank
gave Sonny the order to take Luke out after the jail break, but Sonny
had developed a soft spot for the Spencer Family, especially Luke's
wife Laura. Laura told Sonny that she was pregnant and asked him to
make sure her husband stayed safe. Sonny warned Luke to watch his back
with Frank, and never carried out the order.
The
next time Brenda saw Sonny, he was shot and bleeding. He and Luke had
just successfully walked Frank Smith out of jail, under the guise of
a prison transfer, but at the last minute, the guards realized what
was going on and opened fire. Luke and Frank took off, and Sonny stayed
back and returned fire. He was hit twice, but managed to get into his
car and drive off. It was a very snowy night, and Sonny and Brenda's
cars collided. Brenda managed to get Sonny home to his apartment over
the Paradise Lounge, and called the organization's attorney Phil Cusak
for help. Cusak showed up with a doctor, who saved Sonny's life with
the help of a blood transfusion from Brenda; they both had type O
blood. Bonded by Sonny's brush with death, they began a passionate love
affair, which stopped and started numerous times before it really took
off. But it was another business that facilitated them consummating
their relationship, and that gave Sonny the legitimate cover he
needed in Port Charles.
