In
order to run Frank Smith's territory as the new boss, Sonny needed a
lot of operating capital. He struck a deal with Frank's son, Damien,
who agreed to be his silent partner. Sonny was also partnering with
Luke in his new venture...a blue's club named Luke's. Luke and
Damien were enemies; a fact that would come back to bite Sonny. While
staffing up for his club opening, Luke met a man named Mike Corbin.
Mike told him he was looking for work as a maitra'd, but in reality
he was looking for Sonny. Mike was an experienced con man, and kept
bringing stolen goods to Luke's to be used in the club. One day, he
stole a set of speakers from outside of Mac Scorpio's restaurant The
Outback. Lois, and The Idle Rich, were setting up for a performance,
and had left the speakers outside while moving in other equipment. Sonny
saw the speakers when he walked into Luke's, and was livid. Luke explained
where they'd come from, and then decided to put the fear of God into
Mike...or rather the fear of Sonny. Luke later told Mike whom he had
ripped off, and that he was going to have to face the consequences.
Mike was indeed terrified, and with good reason. For when Sonny came
back and saw him, he was floored. Mike Corbin was non other than Sonny's
father, the former Michael Corinthos, Sr., who had abandoned Sonny and
his mother all those years earlier.
Mike
was the last person Sonny wanted to see. He hated his father for leaving,
and allowing Deke to come into his life. Mike expected Sonny to be mad,
but he didn't understand his son's violent anger. It was Brenda who
told Mike that Sonny was abused by Deke. Mike thought he had left Adela
and Sonny in good hands and was completely shocked at the news. At the
same time, Sonny was dealing with several other serious issues. Frank
Smith's old attorney, Phil Cusak, decided that he should be the new
boss, not Sonny. He ordered some men to firebomb Luke's club before
it opened, putting Sonny, Luke, Laura, Lucky and their dog Foster in
danger. Sonny dealt with the bombers, and ordered Harry Silver, an old
friend and associate, to take care of Cusak. But before Harry could,
Cusak disappeared. Sonny wondered who helped him out...and why. He found
out the night that the club finally opened, when Joe Scully strolled
in. Sonny was happy to see him, but nervous as to what his presence
meant. Joe told him that he took out Cusak, and that he wanted in on
Sonny's action in Port Charles. He especially wanted a piece of Luke's.
Sonny was caught between his loyalty to Joe, and his friendship with
Luke as well as his own ambition and pride. Joe had to be stopped, but
Sonny felt unable to deal with him in the usual mob way. He owed Joe
too much.
Sonny
told Luke about his childhood, and how Joe killed Deke for him. Sonny
also told Brenda more about his past, and his relationships with Mike
and Joe. Sonny was also forming a friendship with Lily Rivera, Miguel's
girlfriend, which Brenda was very unhappy about. Luke then devised a
plan to get Joe busted for drug trafficking. Joe had been recruited
by Damien Smith to go after Lucy Coe's company Deception Cosemetics...which
also happened to be the company that Brenda modeled for. Sonny, Luke
and Lucy all conspired to take Joe down. Unfortunately, Joe wasn't one
to go down easy, and although he'd been arrested, he made bail, and
promptly kidnapped Lucy Coe. Sonny and Luke went to rescue her, and
Sonny ended up in a showdown with Joe. Although Sonny was like a son
to him, Joe was ruthless, and fired his gun at Sonny. Out of nowhere,
Sonny's father Mike jumped in front of the bullet, and Sonny then shot
Joe to save both Mike and himself.
The
trouble didn't end there. Joe's men retaliated against Sonny and Luke...launching
hits on Sonny's apartment, the club, and Luke's house all in one night.
Brenda was caught in the shower; Stone was hit outside of the club;
and Sonny, Luke and his family were shot at in Luke's home. When the
smoke cleared, Brenda was shaken but not hurt, and the men at Luke's
house were all dead. Stone had been shot in the leg, which prompted
him to run away. For Stone had just found out that he had AIDS, which
was enough to deal with, but when he was shot, his blood got on Robin
who had met him outside the club, and Stone freaked. Brenda and Lois
were freaked too. It was getting harder and harder to deny what Sonny
was involved in...although he kept denying it to them. Sonny was afraid
that Brenda would leave him if she knew the truth. Ned Ashton was also
flipping out over the latest events, and he put a plan in motion to
expose Sonny's mob connections...and to take him down.
