Sonny
was in a self-imposed exile, running a Casino on a Caribbean island
that he bought. The last thing he wanted was to return to Port Charles,
but “the business” left him no choice. He got wind that a
mob associate in Puerto Rico was planning to make a move against Jason,
whom Sonny had left in charge back home. Not trusting that the phone
lines were secure enough, Sonny paid a surprise visit to Jason and Robin
who were living together with Jason's son Michael. Michael was the biological
child of Carly Benson, Jason's former lover, and AJ Quartermaine, Jason's
brother. Carly had lied to AJ, and to her boyfriend Tony Jones, and
told them the baby was Jason's. After the baby was born, Carly suffered
from postpartum depression, and left the child with Jason. Jason named
Michael after Sonny, out of respect and honor for his friend, and asked
Mike and his sister Emilyto be Michael's godparents.
Jason and Mike also bought a bike shop when Sonny was gone.
After
Carly returned, Tony, who had gone crazy himself, kidnapped Michael.
Jason found them...and Robin who had previously gone looking and been
grabbed by Tony herself. At Tony's trial, Carly grabbed a policeman's
gun, and shot him. Carly was then sent away to the Ferncliff mental
institution, and once again Jason took care of Michael.
When
Sonny showed up at his door, Jason was pleasantly surprised. He missed
his friend, his father, and was having a hard time juggling work and
his personal life. Sonny planned to just stay long enough to make sure
Jason was all right. One night the phone rang, and Sonny picked it up.
He didn't say anything, but was stunned when he heard Brenda's voice
on the other end. Brenda knew it was Sonny...she felt it...and she hurried
over to see him. They had a bittersweet “reunion,” with Brenda
demanding answers to why Sonny left her at the altar. She also told
him about the breakdown she'd had because of it. Sonny was floored by
what she said, and even more floored by the realization that he still
loved her as much as ever. But Brenda made it clear that she had moved
on with her life, and was back with Jax. When Jason returned home, Sonny
told him that he would die seeing Brenda's face.
Sonny
put in an appearance at the General Hospital Nurses Ball. Brenda, who
was performing on the stage, was stunned at the sight of him (even though
she'd already seen him) as was the rest of the town. Sonny did his best
to smile and charm her, but Brenda ran from him.
The
men plotting against Jason made their move. Carlos from Puerto Rico
held the marker for a large loan on Jerry Jax, Jasper Jax's brother,
and ordered him to kill Jason as payment. Jerry rigged an explosion
at the Corinthos/Morgan warehouse, and Sonny and Jax were caught inside.
Sonny saved both their lives by taking Jax down a trap door into the
basement. When they emerged, Sonny was crushed to see Brenda run right
past him and into Jax's arms.
Sonny
left soon after that. But during his brief visit he also reconnected
with his friend Luke; his old girlfriend Karen Wexler; and his father
Mike. Karen and Sonny hashed out a lot of old junk, and the conversation
ended with her thanking him for everything he'd done for her. Things
went even more roughly with Mike, who was furious at his son for leaving
without a trace in the first place. Their relationship got repaired
to some degree before Sonny left again. When he did, no one knew if
he'd ever come back...including us!
