Jason
Morgan was having a rough time of it. He had given up Sonny's territory
to Anthony Moreno; wanting to keep his son Michael and girlfriend Robin
safe from the mob life. But Moreno didn't believe Jason was really out...and
he kept going after Jason. Jason couldn't handle the situation alone.
He needed his mentor, his father, his friend...Sonny Corinthos. However
Sonny was having problems of his own. He was still living on his island
and running the casino. But Sonny was in the midst of a deep depression.
Jason had come to him months earlier and told him that Brenda Barrett
was dead. After recovering from her own mental breakdown, Brenda was
reunited with her mother...whom her father had told her was dead. Brenda's
mother was alive, but psychotic, and ended up driving her car off a
cliff, with Brenda beside her. Sonny couldn't believe the light of his
life had been put out. He didn't know how to deal with it. He grew angrier
and angrier; smashing everything in sight, and wanting to die himself.
One day a casino employee named Maria called Jason to tell him that
Mr. Corinthos needed his help. It was fortuitous timing for Jason, since
he needed Sonny's help as well. Now, he just had to convince Sonny to
return to Port Charles with him.
That
wasn't easily accomplished. Sonny fought Jason tooth and nail when Jason
showed up on the Island. Jason even sent Sonny's father Mike down to
try to convince his son to come home. Finally, Sonny relented, and went
home with Jason. Robin was thrilled to see her old friend; her older
brother. She was having problems too. Jason was being torn between her,
and his love for Michael...because loving Michael meant dealing with
Michael's mother Carly, who had recently been released from Ferncliff.
Robin knew that Carly wanted Jason for herself, and was afraid that
Jason would be manipulated by Carly because of the baby. She pleaded
with Sonny to intervene, and Sonny did what he could. He told Jason
what Carly's game was; and he knew he was right after meeting the woman.
Robin reached the point where she couldn't take any more, and she did
the unthinkable...she told AJ Quartermaine that he was Michael's real
biological father. She did it to take Carly's power away, but in the
process she broke Jason's heart. Sonny was torn. He had known the truth
for a while, but was stunned that Robin betrayed Jason's trust like
that. Robin then decided to leave town, and although upset with her,
Sonny told her if she ever needed anything, he'd be there. Once Robin
left, Carly moved in with Jason, Michael and Sonny. She and Sonny rubbed
each other the wrong way from the start; probably because Sonny didn't
buy her bull, and she knew it.
Sonny
was also dealing with all the memories of Brenda that being back home
conjured up. He thought about her everywhere he went; especially on
the docks, where they'd first formally met. One day, while there, he
rescued a young woman who was being mugged. After pounding on the mugger
and scaring him off, Sonny was floored when he looked the woman in the
face. She bore a strong resemblance to Brenda. Whether it was that,
or just that he was lonely, Sonny found himself thinking about her a
lot. At the same time, Sonny and Jason were starting up a new business:
Corinthos Morgan Coffee Imports. They were trying to go legit because
AJ was now seeking custody of little Michael, and trying to stave off
Anthony Moreno. Sonny also figured that if they had to get back in
the coffee business would be a great cover. Sonny went to Jake's bar
to meet with Jason. He was thinking of Brenda, when one of their songs
(Crazy Love) came on the jukebox. A waitress then walked up to take
his order, and Sonny turned to find the woman from the docks. She introduced
herself as Hannah Scott, and Sonny decided he definitely wanted to get
to know her.
As
the custody battle heated up, Jason decided that he would run off with
Michael and Carly. He took the baby and they went to Sonny's island.
Carly was to follow the next night. But when AJ showed up with a court
order for a paternity test, Carly panicked. Instead of letting Sonny
take her to the airport as planned, she lied to him about having to
stick around for her mother Bobbie Spencer. The next thing Sonny knew,
Taggart was at his door with a search warrant; looking for evidence
against Jason, who was wanted for kidnapping. Sonny sprang into action
to save his friend. He spoke to an attorney, Alexis Davis (whom he was
also trying to get on board as his own attorney), who informed him that
they needed to get the mother's cooperation to even have a prayer at
shared custody. Sonny then went to see Carly at the Quartermaine's mansion
where she now lived. He overheard her telling AJ that Jason had kept
her a prisoner all this time. When AJ left the room, Sonny confronted
Carly and told her that he would make sure she'd never get near Jason
or her kid again. Sonny then went to the island to tell Jason what happened,
and that he should never come back. Jason was unwilling to keep the
child from his mother, so he returned to face a nasty custody battle,
and the escalating mob situation.
