Things
heated up quickly between Sonny and Hannah. Sonny helped her get a job
as a waitress at Luke's club, after Hannah'd been caught stealing from
Jake's bar. She also tried her hand at escorting, but Sonny interrupted
her dinner with a john...who also happened to be Joseph Sorel, Anthony
Moreno's second in command. Hannah played very hard to get with Sonny,
but softened towards him when tragedy struck. Luke's son Lucky had been
living above the motorcycle shop owned by Jason; the shop where he worked
after giving up the territory to Moreno. One night, someone torched
the building, and Lucky was supposedly caught inside. The viewers soon
found out that Lucky wasn't dead; he had been kidnapped by Helena Cassadine.
But all of Port Charles thought he was gone, including his parents who
immediately blamed Sonny. Luke and Laura were certain that Sonny's mob
rival Moreno set the fire, and therefore it was Sonny's fault. Of course,
Sonny blamed himself more than anyone...even though the arson investigator
concluded the fire was accidentally set by candles Lucky was burning
in his room. Sonny and Luke's friendship was at the breaking point.
Meanwhile, Hannah had warmed up to Sonny, but he started warning her
that people get hurt around him. She tried to comfort him, and ended
up accepting an invitation to have dinner at his place. Before she went,
she ran into Jasper Jax outside of Kelly's. Jax thought she was Brenda.
Hannah knew of Brenda; Sonny had filled her in on all the people in
his life that he'd lost: Stone, Lily & their baby; and Brenda. Hannah
went to Sonny's and confronted him about why he wanted to be with her.
He convinced her that he knew she wasn't Brenda, and they made plans
to continue their relationship.
Sonny
got word that Moreno had planted a bomb in his car. He knew he had no
choice but to take back the territory. He planned an all-out assault,
and was going out with his accountant Benny to be seen in public when
it happened. But Hannah showed up and Sonny decided to spend the night
with her instead. They ended up in bed, but before they could consummate
their relationship, Sonny was arrested. Hannah serves as Sonny's alibi,
and the charges were soon dropped. But Hannah is spooked, and breaks
things off with Sonny. However, she doesn't stay away for long, and
shows up at his door to announce she doesn't want to be without him.
They end up in bed, and this time don't get interrupted. A few nights
later, Sonny takes Hannah to the General Hospital Nurse's Ball. Afterwards,
they leave through the kitchen for security purposes. Emily Quatermaine,
Jason's sister, overheard Jason telling Sonny the exit route, and she
in turn told her new friend, Juan Santiago. Juan was working as a waiter
at the event, and told Emily he wanted to thank Sonny for a huge tip
he'd gotten. In reality, Juan was the son of Lily Rivera (Sonny's dead
wife) and Miguel Morez (her first love). But he had run away from his
adopted parents in search of his biological father, and he was convinced
that was Sonny. Juan confronted Sonny in the kitchen.
Seeing
Juan again weirded Sonny out. With things heating up on the business
front, Sonny was panicked that Juan would get hurt. He tried everything
he could to get the boy to go home, but Juan refused. Juan's adopted
father came to Port Charles and agreed to let Juan stay if Sonny kept
an eye on him. Eventually, Juan decided to prove his worth to Sonny,
and took a job working for Sorel who was trying to hold down the fort
for Moreno. Moreno had fled town the night Sonny tried to take him out.
Sonny missed killing Moreno, but managed to take back most of the territory.
Juan was hoping to get information from Sorel that Sonny could use.
Sorel found out that Juan knew Sonny, and assumed he was a spy. He beat
Juan to within an inch of his life, sending Sonny into a deep depression,
wracked with guilt. Before shutting himself off to the world, Sonny
ordered a hit on Sorel...but his men botched the job and Sorel survived.
Sonny
kept everyone at bay, especially Hannah and Mike. But one day Carly
showed up looking for Jason who was out of town. She got into the penthouse,
and found Sonny fondling broken glass amidst a sea of smashed furniture
and other objects. For Jason's sake, she stuck around and tried to help.
In doing so, she got a glimpse of the bottomless pool of pain that Sonny
carried with him every day.
