The History of Sonny Corinthos:

The Second Coming — December 1998 to 2003

Slowly, Sonny came out of his depression and reconnected with Hannah. But he soon realized that Hannah was keeping secrets from him. One night, after dropping Hannah off at Kelly's where she had a room, Sonny saw a man approach her. When the man put his hands on Hannah, Sonny lost it, and threw the man into the front window of the diner. Sonny kept beating the man, until Tammy, Kelly's manager, came downstairs and yelled at him to stop. After instructing his guard Johnny to escort the man to the airport and out of town, Sonny asked Hannah who he was and why he was there. Hannah lied and explained he was her ex-boyfriend. The next day, Sonny apologized to Tammy for the trouble, but was then outraged to hear from her that the man had come around before. Sonny angrily confronted Hannah in her room, and she got very afraid of him. They broke up, again, and Sonny left. But once again, they reunited soon afterwards.

But more trouble was brewing. Sonny was soon arrested by the FBI on RICO violations. The day of his arrest, Carly spotted Hannah and her ex-boyfriend in an alley. Carly was convinced that Hannah was cheating on Sonny, and conspiring with her ex to bilk him out of his money. But before she could share her suspicions with Sonny, he was arrested. Sonny was denied bail, and spent several agonizing days and nights in jail; (agonizing because of his claustrophobia). He was also baffled about why he'd been arrested at that time, and he figured someone might have ratted on him. It is at this time we found out that Hannah is actually an FBI agent, and that her “ex-boyfriend” is an agent as well. Her assignment was to get close to Sonny and to take him down. But she got closer than she planned, and fell in love with him. Now, she was doing everything she could to protect him from the FBI. Eventually, the charges against Sonny were dropped due to lack of evidence, since Hannah had not given the Bureau anything useful. Sonny's arrest did have fallout though. When the FBI started investigating Sonny's activities again, they brought in the IRS to audit Luke's club. Luke blew up, and wanted Sonny out. Sonny reluctantly signed his ownership in the club over to Luke, and their friendship pretty much ended right then. Hannah was by Sonny's side through all of this, and they grew closer and closer. Carly wasn't about to back off Hannah. She searched Hannah's room at Kelly's and found a gun in a locked box. Then, Hannah, under pressure from the FBI, decided to break it off with Sonny rather than help bring him down. She told Sonny she couldn't handle his lifestyle and the threat of arrest. Sonny was very upset. Carly then showed up to tell Sonny what she'd found in Hannah's room. Sonny was far less than receptive, and assumed Carly was the reason Hannah left him. They got into a fight, which Jason got in the middle of, defending Carly to Sonny. Sonny left the penthouse angry at both of them, and Jason was very upset at Carly for causing trouble between him and Sonny. Eventually, Jason agreed with Carly that Hannah was not who she seemed, and together, they investigated her.

Eventually, Jason discovered that Hannah was an FBI agent, and found a tape of her boasting to her superiors that she would bring Sonny down. Jason reluctantly told Sonny, who was shaken to the core at the news. He decided to keep Hannah around for a while (she was moving in with him), and feed her information on Moreno's activities (he had since returned to town). He kept up the charade as long as he could, but it was taking its toll. One night, Carly came to him looking for information on Jason and Elizabeth Webber, whom she'd seen slow dancing together through the window at Kelly's. Sonny was mad at the world, and saw a chance to free Jason from Carly once and for all. Carly was devestated by Jason's interest in another woman, and started coming on to Sonny. They lit a match, and burned the whole house down.
