The History of Sonny Corinthos:

The Second Coming — December 1998 to 2003

Sonny was furious at Carly for lying to him and for getting him arrested. He was also concerned that she could have been hurt or killed. He dragged her back to the penthouse to live with him again...then gave her the silent treatment. He was also furious at Mike for involving Carly. But both Sonny and Carly knew they had strong feelings for each other at this point. When Jason made a surprise return home, Sonny was afraid he would take Carly and Michael away from him. His attorney Alexis Davis then complicated matters by telling Sonny he'd have to marry Carly to keep her from testifying against him. Sonny asked Jason if he wanted his family back, and when Jason told him no, Sonny decided to marry Carly. Carly, afraid that Sonny didn't love her like she loved him, asked Jason to take her and Michael away; Jason refused, realizing his two friends had fallen for each other. The wedding took place in Sonny's living room, with a Justice of the Peace. Carly ran upstairs before saying “I do” and Jason had to talk her down. Sonny married Carly fully believing it was Jason she really wanted. After the wedding they both tried to make things work, and started growing closer again. Mike showed up one day with an expensive silver bowl as a wedding present. Before returning home, Sonny had been told that Mike had just borrowed $10,000 from one of his loan sharks. Incensed, Sonny confronted Mike about it, his gambling, and his lies. The fight escalated and Mike slapped Sonny across the face. Carly threw Mike out, and then tried to comfort Sonny. But Sonny shut down emotionally and left. He then decided that he was too damaged for Carly to be saddled with, and told her he was getting an annulment. Carly was desperate to change his mind, and tried seducing him several times. Sonny didn't play, until one day when he found out the tape of him and Sorel had disappeared from the PCPD and the charges had been dropped. Carly knew this too, (she'd intercepted a call from Alexis), and knew she was running out of time. She seduced Sonny in the back of his limousine. This time Sonny was a willing participant, knowing that Carly knew their marriage could end at any point and assuming she was making love to him for real. She was, but when she found out that Sonny knew as well, she felt hurt. When they returned home, Carly told Sonny she needed to know he really wanted her as his wife. Sonny told her he did, and they bonded like never before.

Things were still volatile on the business front. Jason's sister Emily had been kidnapped by a man that dealt drugs for Sorel. Zander Smith was wanted for the murder of an undercover cop, and he grabbed Emily as a hostage as he fled the police. Eventually Jason retrieved his sister. But Zander, who had fallen for her, returned to Port Charles, and was arrested. Emily asked Alexis and Sonny to help him, and Sonny eventually agreed, paying Zander's bail and offering him protection. Sorel wasn't about to let Zander testify against him, since it was he who ordered the cop's murder. And he wanted Sonny dead as well. He set up an ambush, and Sonny, Zander, Emily and Alexis were all shot at in front of the PCPD. Zander was winged, and Sonny was critically injured. He was brought to GH, where Carly kept careful vigil at his side. At one point Sonny's heart stopped, and he found himself in heaven, face to face with Lily and his two unborn children. While Carly screamed at the doctors to revive her husband, Sonny made peace with Lily and told her he couldn't stay with her. Sonny's heart started beating again, and when he woke up, he told Carly “I came back for you.” Soon after, Sonny proposed marriage to Carly and planned a romantic wedding in Martinique to renew their vows.

The attempts on Sonny's life kept coming, and Jason discovered that two of Sonny's own men were conspiring with Sorel. The two men, Ric (Carly's bodyguard) and Carlos (from Puerto Rico), were disposed of, and Sorel was turned over to the police. Shaken that someone so close to his wife was a traitor, Sonny told Carly their marriage was over in order to protect her. Carly wouldn't accept it, and she went to Martinique to wait for Sonny. Sonny went there, and tried again to drive her away; she wouldn't budge. They ended up saying their vows in a private ceremony in front of a priest. They were very happy...and then they returned home where all hell broke loose.
