Gilroy Bassmasters
Night Tournament at Clear Lake, June 8, 2002.

Tip of the Month - Tips for Night Fishing

Wear a PFD (Personal Floation Device) while night fishing.
Organize your rods, tackle boxes, flashlights, and net before the sun goes down.
Check your boat's running lights before going out.
During daylight, check out the area you plan to fish at night.
When tired, sleep. The fish will be there when you wake up.
When using a black light, use photochromic or clear blue fishing line.
I found the best time to fish is when the night is completely dark. No moon.
Night time is the best time to start using your black surface plugs, black crankbaits and black spinnerbaits.
Most night tournaments last over 12 hours, remember to bring food and water.
Although the evening may start out warm, the late night and early morning will be cool, bring a jacket.
Bug spray.

Tip of the Month – Making Your Senko Last
Are you going thru senkos faster than you’re catching bass? Try using a dab of super glue on the hook and  senko. It’ll keep the senko from sliding up the line and wearing out faster. This tip was suggested by Darrell Allen.

March Meeting Report

Introduced 3 prospective members:  Marco Delgado, Zak Elrite, & Jim Dowling.
They found the club via Eddie King, Clark Foster, & Bill Lee.

Old news

Darrell Allen & Steve Yee report on GBM Club logo wear. Darrell has found an embroideror that will make our club hats and shirts. Cost is $11 and $22, respectively. The hats & shirts will be ready for the April meeting. Please bring $12 for each new hat and $22 for your new shirt.

Steve contacted Karen Uyeda to embroider our club jackets. He will bring in a sample of the bass embroidery at the next meeting.

Cost for the jacket depends on:
- If you provide the jacket, $60 to embroider the big bass logo, the club name & fisherman’s name.
- If  Karen supplies the jacket (depends on jacket style), roughly $85.

New news

It was club decision to change the April two day Clear Lake tournament to April 20th & 22nd.  We will be launching out of Lucerne. The reason for the date change was to support Denise’s Annual Coyote Bait & Tackle Anderson Tournament, which is being held on April 27th.

I also want to thank Chuck Peak for being Secretary / Treasurer for the last few years. Chuck’s record keeping is impeccable and newsletters were always on time.

Tip of the Month – Keeping a Fish Log

Have you ever forgotten which lure you used two years ago, or the fishing conditions you caught that 4 pound bass at Lake X, or items to bring on your next outing? One way to remember is to start keeping a fishing log. A fishing log will help you eliminate unnecessary tackle on your next outting. Dedicate a folder with copies of the attached Log Sheet.

You can also download this log from http://www.bassresource.com/html/fishinglog3.gif

December meeting: A couple of club rules were modified. Rule 13 was modified to allow a late entry after the club meeting. The late entrant must go as a non boater, pay a $15 late fee, have approval from the Tournament Director at least 24 hours before the tournament, and be assigned to a boat by the Tournament Director. If not approve by the Tournament Director, the angler will not fish. This can be done by the Assistant Tournament Director if the Tournament Director in not available. Rule 27 was changed. We will now pick dates and lakes at the December meeting.

A new tournament schedule was voted on and approved at the meeting. It includes both lakes and dates. The new schedule is in this newsletter.

The annual banquet date and location will be decided at the January 3 meeting. The Meza Luna restaurant in Morgan Hill has been proposed for sometime in February.

October meeting: The next tournament is at the Delta on November 10.

Steve Yee has been talking to the Tri-Valley Bassmasters about a turkey shoot, club against club. We discussed this idea at the meeting and agreed to allow Steve to handle the details. GBM Newsletter June 2001
by Chuck Peak

The June meeting is Thursday May 31!! Not April 7.
The meeting is a week early because the Clear lake nite toumament is June 9, We need at least a week between the meeting and the toumament so that people have time to make arrangements between boater and non boater.

This newsletter is being sent out a little early because the author will be trout fishing in the Sierras.

May meeting: The May meeting was held on April 26 because of the short time until the May 5 and 6 toumament. Results of both the April 21 Delta tournament and the May 5 and 6 Clear Lake tournament are in the newsletter.

For the June 9 nite tournament at Clear Lake we will launch at Lucerne about 6:30 PM. The tournament will be from 7 PM to 7 AM. Try to bring a non boater or think about going as a non boater even if you have a boat. If you are a boater and don't draw a non boater consider bringing a guest that does not participate or team up after the draw with another boater. There is a safety issue with anyone fishing alone at nite.

Top 6 is on for October 14. Bill Zeigler is organizing a team from our club.

Next Meeting: Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 7:30 PM. El Capri, Morgan Hill. Corner of Monterey and Cochrane Road.

Tournament results - Delta, Holland Riverside Marina, April 21, 2001

Tournament results - Clear lake, May 5 & 6, 2001

Tournament Schedule: June 9 night at Clear Lake (club meeting May 31), June 16 Clear Lake TOC, July 21 TBD, August 11 night at Clear Lake, September 15 and 16 at Lake Shasta ( bring your wife or SO), October 6 TBD (club meeting September 27), October 14 Top 6 Delta, November 10 TBD, December 8 TBD.

Club treasury: After the Club TOC we will have about $550 remaining. We will have enough to make it through the year with no problem but not a lot of surplus. If you have anything to donate for raffles that would help.

TOC: The club Toumament Of Champions will be on June 16 at Clear Lake. It will be the same format as last year, with $720 being split between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and big fish. Chuck Peak will be organizing the event. The top 6 boaters will take their boats and the next 6 will go as non boaters.

The pairings and launch order are:
Chuck Peak & Dave Glover
Clark Foster & Bob Greneveld
Bill Zeigler & Jeff Wilson
Darrell Allen & Bob Nathan
Don Welch & Steve Yee
Tim Gomes & Eddie King

Alternates are Brian Wierzbicki and Robert Ramirez.

I have talked to everyone that qualified for the TOC and they do plan to fish. No one had any problem with the pairing of boaters and non boaters so the list is final unless we have a last minute cancellation. We will launch out of Redbud.

BBAC Dinner: The BBAC dinner was held at Lou's Village on May 17. There were 8 members and 7 wives at the dinner. I was a little disappointed in the food, not that it was bad, but Lou's Village has an excellent reputation. Oh well, it was for a good cause and it's nice to get together with club members at a social occasion, not just toumaments and an annual banquet. It was a lot of fun. I'll plan to be there again next year.

Boating Program: A new boating program is in effect for local lakes. Non MTBE fuel is again required for Anderson, Coyote, and Calero. They are checking for gas receipts from any Union 76 station. Anderson does not allow jet skis, requires reservations on weekends, and has a 70 boat / day limit. Calero has a 58 vessel / day limit and requires reservations on weekends. Coyote has a 70 vessel / day limit but does not require reservations. There are some very nice fish in Coyote and it is not fished heavily like Calero or Anderson. I caught about 20 fish over 2 pounds on May 10 at Coyote fishing weed beds near deeper water.

Gilroy Bassmasters Newsletter May 2001
by Chuck Peak

The May meeting is Thursday April 26!! Not May 3.

The meeting is a week early because the two day Clear lake toumament is May 5 and 6. We need at least a week between the meeting and the tournament so that people have time to make arrangements between boater and non-boater.

April meeting: This newsletter does not include the results from the April 21 toumament in the Delta. Sorry. There will not be enough time after the tournament to get the newsletter to you before the next meeting. Well, I could just make up some numbers.

Clear lake should be red hot! The spawn is on. Because of the recent cold fronts the bass have temporally moved off the beds. They will be back! Sight fishing! Big fish! Two days. There should be some heavy limits. Lots of 5 to 7 pound fish are being caught. Don't miss this one, May 5 and 6. Make your reservations soon! Launch at Redbud.

The club decided to stay with April 21 as the date for the Delta toumament. Launch at Holland.

Only 21 members have paid their dues for 2001. The club is getting to be too small again. We really need non boaters. At the Delta tournament we had exactly one non boater.

If you have friends that might be interested in joining a Bass Club, bring them to a meeting. They don't even have to be at the meeting, just sign them up. Heck, bring a stranger. Call one and get them to go to Clear Lake. Bring a friend, they can fish with you as a guest the first time. Neither of you participate in the draw except for launch position. This is rule 32 that we passed last year. About the only requirement is that your friend be a prospective member.

There are five couples that signed up for the BBAC dinner on May 17 at Lou's Village in San Jose. Tell your wife that other women will be there and that there is a special raffle for the ladies. Lou's Village is a classy place and the ladies should approve. It's not just a thing for guys. We have a reserved table and receive 120 raffle tickets worth $120. That is like $24 off the price for a couple. You do not have to be a club member to participate. Call Chuck Peak 683-0530 to sign up or see me at the May 26 meeting..

Bill Zeigler will organize a club team to fish Top Six October 14 in the Delta. There is some question as to if there will actually be a tournament this year. Bill will follow up.

Salmon fishing is red hot as this is being written. They are ( were ) only about 4 miles off of Moss Landing when I went out. Early limits, nice sized fish.

Next Meeting: Thursday, May 26, 2001 at 7:30 PM. El Capri, Morgan Hill. Comer of Monterey and Cochrane Road.

Toumament results - Delta: Next month. There was not enough time to get the newsletter out so that you would receive it before the April 26 meeting. I'll include results for both the Delta and Clear Lake next month.

Clark Foster & Bob Groneveld
Bill Zeigler & Jeff Wilson
Darrell Allen & Bob Nathan
Don Welch & Steve Yee
Tim Gomes & Eddie King

Alternates are Brian Wierzbicki and Robert Ramirez.

I have talked to everyone that qualified for the TOC and they do plan to fish. No one had any problem with the pairing of boaters and non boaters so the list is final unless we have a last minute cancellation. We will launch out of Redbud.

Tournament Schedule: May 5 and 6 Clear Lake (club meeting April 26), June 9 night at Clear Lake (club meeting May 31), June 16 Clear Lake TOC, July 21, August 11 night at Clear Lake, September 15 and 16 at Lake Shasta, October 6 (club meeting September 27), October 14 Top 6 Delta, November 10, December 8.

Club treasury: The club has approximately $1400 in our account on March 28, 2001. This is not counting the $720 that has been reserved for the club TOC, and $250 to BBAC. After that we will have about $400 remaining. New members will bring that up a little. We will have enough to make it through the year with no problem but not a lot of surplus.

BBAC Dinner: The BBAC is having their fund raising dinner Thursday May 17 at Lou's Village in San Jose. Tickets are $40 for guys and $30 for gals. A great restaurant and a good cause. Chuck Peak has the tickets available and will have them at the meeting.

The raffle is always fantastic. It's the real reason to go. The auction is spectacular. We have sold 10 tickets so far and have reserved a table for 10 ( 5 couples ) and will receive $120 in raffle tickets. There is room for more. Talk to your wife or SO. Take her out to a nice dinner and win good stuff. There will be a special raffle for women as well. And, this is important to the ladies, they will not be alone. Other couples are going.

Fish Day for Kids: Jason Dewall, a Park Ranger at San Luis Reservoir is organizing a Fish Day for kids at the O'Neill Forebay on May 19. He is looking for volunteers to give the kids a hand. Maybe we can make this a club event. If you wish to volunteer let Chuck know at the meeting or give me a call at 683-0530. Talk directly with Jason by calling (209)826-1196. Jason is scheduled to work the evening of our club meeting but will try to arrange time off to make a short presentation at the meeting. If he can't make it I'll have the information. He is also a prospective member.

Frog Tog Dealership: Delta Dave Glover has opened an exclusive Frog Tog dealership on Bethyl Island. It's some very good rain gear and about 1/4 the cost of something like Cabelas. Talk to Dave about what is available. Dave may even model it for us.

A & B Outdoor World going out of business: This is a small sporting goods store that sells tackle, guns, hunting equipment and the like. They are located on 1325 1st Street in Gilroy. Everything is on sale, minimum 20% off. There are a few bargains there and prices will drop as inventory is cleared out. Check it out.

March meeting: The club picked the Delta for the April 21 tournament. Probably launch at Ladd's.

There has been some discussion about moving our April 21 meeting to another date. Nothing was decided at the meeting. The problem is that Coyote has a tournament on the same day and a couple of our members will be fishing the Coyote tournament. If we move it to April 14 then we have a conflict with Easter weekend. If we make it Easter take your wife to the BBAC dinner to make up for it.

The launch ramp for the club two day tournament May 5 & 6 at Clear lake will be Redbud. Make your reservations soon!

Only 20 members have paid their dues for 2001. The club is getting to be too small again. If you have friends that might be interested, bring them to a meeting. Remember, they can fish as a guest and can even fish with you the first time. We have one new member, Gary Cromp. Welcome Gary!

Please check the included mailing list for accuracy. There are also 3 people with expired BASS membership and that can mean that your liability insurance from BASS is not in effect.

Checks: to the club must be made out to CASH or to Chuck Peak!

Next Meeting: The first Thursday of the month, April 5, 2001 at 7:30 PM. El Capri, Morgan Hill. Corner of Monterey and Cochrane Road.

Tournament results - Lake McClure, March 17, 2001

Club treasury: The club has approximately $1400 in our account on March 28, 2001. This is not counting the $720 that has been reserved for the club TOC, and $250 to BBAC. After that we will have about $400 remaining. New members will bring that up a little. We will have enough to make it through the year with no problem but not a lot of surplus.

TOC: The club Tournament Of Champions will be on June 16 at Clear Lake. It will be the same format as last year, with $720 being split between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and big fish. Chuck Peak will be organizing the event. The top 6 boaters will take their boats and the next 6 will go as non boaters.

The suggested pairings are: Chuck Peak & Dave Glover, Clark Foster & Bob Greneveld, Bill Zeigler & Jeff Wilson, Darrell Allen & Bob Nathan, Don Welch & Steve Yee, Tim Gomes & Eddie King. Alternates are Brian Wierzbicki and Robert Ramirez. If you have any problem with the suggested pairings or if you qualified but will not be able to fish the TOC let Chuck know ASAP, call 683-0530 now and leave a message. Final participants and pairings will be made within two weeks. I'll call and if there are any changes to boat assignments. We will launch out of Redbud.

If the club can manage a table for 10 ( 5 couples ) we will receive $120 in raffle tickets. Talk to your wife or SO or someone else's wife. Take her out to a nice dinner and win good stuff. There will be a special raffle for women as well.

Top Six: The Bass Classics are having their annual Top Six tournament on October 14, 2001 in the Delta. Headquarters will be Big Break. The format will again be six boat teams with an entry fee of $720. There will be big fish options ( $120 / team ) and heavy boat options ( $120 / team ). They will have a free bar-b-que and the usual huge raffle.

We will not fish this event as a club, the decision was to have our own TOC at Clear Lake. But we may want to organize an informal team and pay our own entry fee like we did last year.

February meeting: Not a lot went on at the meeting, or maybe I just slept through it. Nope, that is not possible, too many loud voices. Must have been dull.

The club picked McClure for the March 17 tournament. It's a good early season lake.

If you have recently fished the local lakes or have done well in a tournament, please share that information at club meetings. We are our own best source of current fishing conditions.

January meeting: The club changed two tournament dates. April 14 was changed to April 21. May 12 and 13 was changed to May 5 and 6. The club meeting for May will be changed to April 26 to allow time between the meeting and tournament.

Bill Zeigler is trying to organize a Casting Kids event for the club to sponsor. Several members said that they would be willing to participate and donate time. BASS supplies a kit to organize and plan the event and a second kit for the event that includes targets, rods, reels, lures, and so on. What we supply at the event is assistance. It was suggested at the meeting that we tie it in to the local Fishing In The City program. Bill will follow up and report at a future meeting.

Banquet: The Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at the El Capri Restaurant. It was a lot of fun and a chance to socialize with old friends. We had about 40 people attend this year.

We owe a special thanks to Bill Zeigler. Bill made all of the banquet arrangements and with his wife did all of the decorations. The Pet Stop donated a box of tackle worth over $100. Thank you Bill! Thank you Silvia!

Chuck Peak's son, Russ, performed his comedy magic act at the banquet. Russ is a professional entertainer and performs primarily at corporate events and trade shows. It was a great show, said the father who has no personal bias. Thanks Russ.

The Raffle was a great success! There were some fantastic prizes. They included a great tackle pack and toys for the kids from Bill and Silvia Zeigler at The Pet Stop, a Loomis rod worth about $200 and drop shot kits from Denise at Coyote Bait and Tackle, a case of TCW3 Plus oil from Wayne at B & P Marine, a check from Darrell and Lannie Allen at The Groomery, a tackle pack from Mel Cottons, and items donated by club members. Thank you all!

I have listed the addresses of the businesses that donated to the club raffle at the end of the newsletter. Take a look and dropping in to see what they have to offer. Coyote offers a discount to club members and has been our unofficial sponsor for a long time. B & P Marine specializes in service for fishing boats and Wayne is a very competent and honest mechanic. The Pet Stop in Gilroy has everything but bass, ask Bill about the bass. The Groomery makes dogs and cats look good. Mel Cottons offers a discount for club members.

If you plan to fish Berryessa in January you definitely want to pay your dues, otherwise you will not have liability insurance and will pay a $10 extra to fish the tournament as a non member and will not be credited for pounds or points. With your membership card you can receive a discount at Coyote, Reed's and Mel Cottons.

The club voted to invite Denise Bradford ( Coyote Bait and Tackle ) and a guest to the banquet. The club will pay for their dinners. It's a way to say thanks for her continued support.

November meeting:
The December meeting is being held November 30 because the tournament is December 9.

Most of the meeting was taken up with voting on rules changes. Surprise, we did not finish. But the changes that were voted in will be handed out at the next meeting.

Dues for 2001 are due in at the November 30 meeting. BASS expects new members in December. If you plan to fish the January toumament you will want your dues in on time. We need to get this in so that our insurance will be valid in January. Nine members have paid their dues for 2001.

The Delta was selected for the December toumament. Should be hot. Florida strained largemouth are busting chad. I have a small bag of plastic worms in chad color #5081.

At the next meeting we will select toumament dates for next year. We will also be selecting a lake for January and a date for the annual banquet.

The club officers will need to meet after the main meeting to discuss awards, such as Rookie Of The Year, Most Improved, and so on. Officers, please let me know if you will want a service plaque.

Bob Greneveld brought copies of the club rules and suggestions for changes or additions. We will vote on rule changes at the next meeting. If you want to change any rule you should be there, this will be the only rules meeting.

Dues for 2001 will be due in December. If you plan to fish the January 2001 toumament you will want your dues in on time. Please plan to pay your year 2001 dues at the November or December meeting. We need to get this in so that our insurance will be valid in January.

Berryessa was selected for the November 11 tournament, launch at Spanish Flat. There is an ABA at Berryessa the next day, so some members will fish both. Start thinking about a lake for December. Hint, think warm. We will select a lake for December at the November meeting and will want to select a date for the January 2001 tournament.

September meeting:
Next month we will have copies of the club rules at the meeting. They are also available on Steve Yee's web site. Chuck Peak and Bob Greneveld will add proposed rule changes in a draft. Anyone else in the club that would like to propose a specific rule change should get a draft to Chuck or Bob so that we can have it in writing. Much easier to vote on it that way. Also easier to change the wording at the meeting. We will vote on the rule changes at the November meeting.

The Delta was selected for the October tournament. Start thinking about a lake for November. Hint, think warm. We will vote on the lake for November at the October meeting.

A proposal was made that we plan a two day toumament at Clear lake next year that includes wives or significant others. We would headquarter at Konocti and plan dinner together. Most of the members at the meeting thought that it was a good idea. We will bring this up again in December when we select lakes and dates for the year. Yeah, December, we have 12 tournaments a year now. Give it some thought and mention it to your wife or SO. Another proposal discussed was that we have an "extra" tournament each year where members are free to fish with a wife or friend. Most thought that it was a good idea.

You should be receiving this newsletter just about the time that the club TOC is happening on October 30 at clear lake. Next months issue will have the results.

Don Welch has purchased a 55 gallon drum of Quicksilver TCW3 Mariner motor oil. Don will sell it to club members only for $10 a gallon. But, you must Bring Your Own Bottle ( one gallon oil container ).

Important, all checks to the club must be made out to CASH or to Chuck Peakl

Next Toumament: October 21 at the Delta. Striper timer Steve Yee will conduct lessons on Salmon fishing. Dave Glover, Chuck Peak, and Eddie King will miss the meeting but will fish the Delta in October. Bob Greneveld will fill in as secretary and treasurer.

Next Meeting: The first Thursday of the month, October 5, 2000 7:30 PM. El Capri, Morgan Hill. Comer of Monterey and Cochrane Road.

Toumament results - Lake Shasta, September 23 & 24, 2000

Toumament Schedule: October 21 Delta-Holland, November 11, December 9. The club TOC is September 30 at Clear Lake. Note that the December meeting will be held on November 30.

Club treasury: The club has approximately $800 in our account. Raffles have helped, especially the stuff that members donated. Keep the donations coming. $620 was spent on TOC.

August meeting: Not much happened at the meeting. A small group of just 12 people.

We will vote on the lake for October 21 at the next meeting. Gary should have plans for the club TOC.

There was apparently a problem with a nite tournament at Clear Lake a couple of weeks ago. Dead fish were found in a trash can at the State Park. They were blamed on a club nite toumament that did not follow the six hour rule. It turns out that the club blamed in the rumors launched at a different ramp and did not have their weigh in at the park. But, DFG is cracking down on six hour rule violations.

We have two new members, Ron Hunnewell and Javier Martinez. Welcome!

The club bank account has been moved from South Valley Bank to Bank Of The West. South Valley charges $10 / month. Bank Of The West is FREE. A much better deal as we save $120 yearly. If you have an uncashed check on South Valley National Bank, return it to Chuck and get a new check on Bank Of The West. Important, all future checks for tournament entry fees or raffle or new member must be made out to CASH ! We get the free checking because the new account is NOT a business account but is a personal account in the name of Charles Peak. Bill Zeigler will also be a signer on this account.

Club treasury: The club has approximately $800 in our account. This is not counting the $720 that has been reserved for the club TOC. At this moment, all club bills are caught up and we have even paid for eight 10 X 13 plaques for new members that have finished in the money this year. These are what you mount the small plates on. We are in very good shape on money. Raffles have helped, especially the stuff that members donated. Keep the donations coming.

July meeting: Because of the very short time between the December club meeting and the toumament( 2 days later ) the club voted to change the date of our December 7 meeting to November 30. This is one week early but will allow time for boaters and non boaters to work out schedules, pre fish, or whatever.

Don Welch has brought new meaning to BYOB. Don has purchased a 55 gallon drum of Quicksilver TCW3 Mariner motor oil. Don will sell it to club members only for $10 a gallon. But, you must Bring Your Own Bottle ( one gallon oil container ). Don't drink too much, this stuff is smooth.

For the Clear Lake nite tournament we will launch at Luceme. For the Shasta two day tournament we will launch at Packers Bay.

Editorial: We really do need to make it a rule to have the drew at least a week before a toumament It was a real problem with little time between the draw and leaving for the lake. In some cases, Boaters and non boaters did not have the opportunity to ride together, pre fish together, or get accommodations together. It's a shame. Meeting at the ramp the morning of a tournament is not what a club should be all about. We should be friends fishing together, not just a bunch of guys that want to fish a tournament.

May meeting: Not a lot happened at the May meeting. Just the drawing for Santa Margarita.

We did have two potential new members at the meeting; John Kowtko and Jason DeCosta. Welcome! Jason fished Santa Margarita as a guest and caught fish. Good start Jason.

Next month, June 3 and 4, is the Clear Lake tournament. The club meeting where you will draw your partner is Thursday June 1. Some people have plans to leave for Clear Lake immediately after the meeting so that they can pre-fish on Friday. If you are a non-boater be prepared to make a quick decision Thursday after the draw. It is also something of a club tradition that wives or significant others come to the tournament. You may not be able to share a room and may have to drive up yourself. Non-boaters will still be responsible for half of the gas to drive up because the boater is pulling the boat but this is sometimes negotiated depending on circumstances. Just something to think about in advance of the meeting. Lots of very big fish being caught at Clear Lake now.

Please donate any unused new tackle to the club to be used in raffles. It will put a few more bucks in the treasury. Nag nag nag.

April meeting: Three new members joined the club. Welcome Randy Johnson, Bob Nathan, and Johnny Dickinson. They are all off to a good start winning a bunch of raffle prizes. Even caught a fish in the Delta. Forgot to tell then that it is not allowed in the first tournament.

Next month we will be voting on a launch site for the August 19 nite tournament at clear lake. Give it some thought. June 2-4 is at Lucerne.

Bill Zeigler is looking into a community service activity for the club. Clean up day at lake Coyote is a possibility. We would follow up a mornings cleanup with a club barbecue. Might get a little good publicity for the club. Bill will follow up at the next meeting.

If you would like to do a little good and have a good time, consider the possibility of participating in the Fishing In The City program. You spenda day helping inner city kids fish. Help with baiting .hooks, netting fish, fishing techniques, whatever. The city stocks an area and kids are allowed to fish free. Tackle and assistance are provided. Heck, bring your kid too. Anyone is welcome. The next event is April 29. Contact Eddie King or Darrell Allen. Both men participate on a regular basis. It's a lot of fun!

The BBAC Bay Area Chapter dinner is Thursday, May 11. Cocktails at 6:00 PM and dinner at 7:30 PM. The location is Naperdack Hall in San Jose, 770 Montague Expwy. Tickets are $35. The reports on previous years is that the food is great, entertainment very good, raffle fantastic. Eddie King has tickets available. If you plan to go by your tickets from Eddie, there is a club table and extra raffle tickets if our club has at least 10 people attending.

Please donate any unused new tackle to the club to be used in raffles. It will put a few more bucks in the treasury. You might even win it back. Be a hero and loose nothing. Or at least get your buddy to fishing with your old junk.

The web site that Steve Yee setup is working! Last month about 6 people contacted us because of the web site. Three just joined the club. Thanks Steve! http://members.home.net/SCY336131

This was our second tournament of the year. Beautiful weather, a few clouds but no rain and almost no fog. The water was very muddy but fairly warm for this time of the year at 56-58 degrees. Visibility about 5 inches. There was a full moon just before the tournament.

John Lake had 2 fish for 6.10 pounds and took first place. John also had big fish at 3.80 pounds. John caught his fish flipping a reaper. Steve Yee had 2 fish for 5.24 pounds and took second place. Steve was fishing the edge of the drop off in front of Ladds in about 20-30 feet of water. Eddie King had 1 fish for 2.80 pounds and took third place.

Of the 17 fishermen there were only no limits. Totals were 21.94 pounds, 9 bass with an average weight per man of 1.29 pounds and an average of 0.53 fish for each angler. The average fish size was 2.44 pounds.

January meeting:
The club selected the tournament dates for 1999, the lake for February and the lakes for the two day toumaments. Again this year, the Delta will be our fall back lake for all toumaments.

The club voted to increase membership dues from $58 to $68. This is because of the increased dues for both the BASS National Federation and Califomia BASS. Fourteen members have paid the additional $10. If you have not, please pay at the next meeting or send a check to Chuck Peak.

The club voted to have two nite tournaments this year. July 15 at Don Pedro and August 19 at Clear Lake.

If you have recently fished the local lakes or have done well in a tournament please share that information at club meetings. We are our own best source of current fishing conditions.

Banquet:
The Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, January 8, 2000 at the El Capri Restaurant. As usual, it was a lot of fun and a chance to socialize with old friends. We had about 40 people attend this year.

We owe a special thanks to Bill Zeigler. Bill made all of the banquet arrangements and his wife and daughter did all of the decorations. The Pet Stop donated a Shimano Curado for the raffle. Thank you Bill! Thank you Silvia! Bill, you may have a shot at president again next year.

The Raffle was a great success! There were some fantastic prizes. They included a Shimano Curado reel ( Bill and Silvia Zeigler at The Pet Stop ), a Loomis rod and a gift certificate worth $100 ( Denise at Coyote Bait and Tackle ), a check ( The Groomery from Darrell and Lannie Allen ), a gift certificate for $100 from Fiberglass Unlimited, and items donated by club members. Thank you all!

I have listed the addresses of the businesses that donated to the club raffle at the end of the newsletter. Take a look and consider the possibility of dropping in to see what they have to offer. Coyote offers a discount to club members and has been our unofficial sponsor for a long time. The Pet Stop in Gilroy has everything but bass, but may have bass flake food. The Groomery makes dogs and cats look good. Fiberglass Unlimited is well known for good work.

If I missed anyone please let me know so that I can include a thanks in the next newsletter.

Awards:
Angler of the year         - Gary Cromp ( 67.05 pounds )
Bassmaster of the year - Gary Cromp ( 306 points )

February 19th Lake Santa Margarita. There has been some discussion that we might change this to the Delta. We will discuss and vote at the next meeting.

Next Meeting:

Top Six:
Top Six will be at Clear Lake on Saturday, June 10. The format is back to the original this year. We will have to decide if we want to participate this year. Vote at the February meeting.

Gary Cromp is organizing Top Six for the club.

Club treasury:
The club will have approximately $1200 in our account on February 1, 1998. This is not counting the $720 that has been reserved for Top Six. After Top Six we will have about $480 remaining in the treasury. Our next big expense will be buying several boards for mounting the small plates on, about $200. After that we will have about $280 remaining. New members will bring that up a little. We will have enough to make it through the year with no problem.

We spent $265 on awards for the banquet, $180 to pay for drinks at the banquet, and made $294 on the Raffle. We sent $250 to BBAC for our annual membership.

December meeting: The club elected the new officers for 2000, decided on the banquet date as January 8, and decided to remain with BBAC. We also voted to have 12 toumaments each year instead of 10. Our next tournament will be January 22 at San Antonio.

There were 19 members paid their dues for 2000. If you did not pay, please do so at the next meeting. Dues are $58 again in 2000. If you plan to fish San Antonio in January you definitely want to pay your dues, otherwise you will not have liability insurance and will pay a $10 extra to fish the tournament as a non member and will not be credited for pounds or points. With your membership card you can receive a discount at Coyote, Reed's and Mel Cottons.

Don Welch is trying to coordinate some informal presentations to be made at the meetings. The idea is to get members to talk about some fishing technique that they are very good at or that is unusual. Don distributed a questionnaire to all members that were at the meeting. Please fill it out and get it back to Don.

The club voted to invite Denise Bradford ( Coyote Bait and Tackle ) and a guest to the banquet. The club will pay for their dinners. It's a way to say thanks for her continued support.

At the next meeting we will draw for the San Antonio toumament vote on rule changes, and select toumament dates for year 2000.

Club Dues: We have a problem. BASS has increased the cost of insurance from $12 to $15. The California chapter of BASS has increased their membership dues from $35 a year to $5 for each member, about $150 total. The total increase is $8 for each member. If we do nothing, we will run short of money before the end of the year.

Options that we might consider are:
1. Increase dues by $8. New total would be $66.
2. Change toumament payout to 90% from current 100%
3. Pay a little more for Top 6.
The simplest is to change the tournament payout.

What do you get for your $5 per member dues to Califomia BASS? There will be a Federation newspaper, a www.califomiabass.org web site, and plans to take a more active role in Califomia fishing issues. They also plan to sponsor an annual toumament for BASS affiliated clubs ( like Top 6 was ). I don't know how good these changes will be, but to keep our insurance, we have to pay up.

Banquet: The Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2000 at the El Capri Restaurant. Drinks and dancing at 6:00 PM and dinner starting at 7:00 PM. Dinners are about $14.00. You will be able to pick from a selection. Children are welcome. Non members are also welcome.

We Plan to have a DJ again this year. Dancing from 6:00 PM until dinner then music until the awards presentations and raffle at 8:00 PM.

Each member should bring something worth at least $10 for the Raffle. We will also have items that have been donated by local Tackle shops. If you know a business that might contribute something, hit them up for a donation. Any business that donates will have their name and address in the next newsletter with a recommendation that members check them out.

Top Six: The Bass Classics are again sponsoring a Top Six toumament on July 10, 2000 at Clear Lake. It will be back to the original format of 6 boat teams of 6-12 persons and with a 5 fish limit. The entry fee will be $150 per boat with a 100% payback. Big fish option of $30 per boat and a heavy stringer option of $20 per boat. Total $100 per person for a 12 person team. They will start accepting entry fees on March 6 on a first come first served basis. For more information see the web site www. bassclassics.org.

More decisions. Do we fish Top Six this year, have a club fish off again this year, or participate in the BASS Club Team Championship? We will want to discuss this and vote by February. The BASS tournament is limited to BASS affiliated clubs and has a $70 entry fee. Details on the year 2000 tournament are not available yet.

Attachments: A list of members, address and phone numbers is attached. Please check that your information is correct. If your BASS membership number is not on the list then please get it to me ASAP. Otherwise you will not receive your BASS Times. If there is a problem with your B.A.S.S. status please call (334)409-5329 to get it corrected.

If you have not paid your dues and insurance please do so at the next meeting or mail a check to Chuck Peak. We have to get our insurance in before the first tournament The total dues are $58. Of that $28 goes to the club and $15 to the B.A.S.S. Federation, $5 to California BA.S.S. and $10 to B.B.A.C..

If you want to become a member of the Gilroy Bassmasters you must also be a member of B.A.S.S. This is required because the B.A.S.S. federation insurance is not effective unless you also belong to B.A.S.S. All that is required to join B.A.S.S. is a magazine subscription. For $20 you get 10 magazines, a membership card, and usually a free gift. When we send in your $15 to the federation you will also receive B.A.S.S. Times free. When we send your $5 to California B.A.S.S. you receive a newsletter and can participate in B.A.S.S. tournaments. All in all, it's not such a bad deal.

One proposal to be made at the meeting is that we fish 12 tournaments a year instead of 10.

It's time to join the Gilroy Bassmasters for year 2000. BASS expects to receive the 2000 membership list in December. They never get it, but we should get a few names in just to remain active. If you have the cash to spare, please join at the December meeting.

Tournament results - Delta Holland Riverside, November 6, 1999

Next Toumament: A Turkey Shoot on December 11, 1999 at lake Nacimento. There must be at least one club member in each boat. Spouses, friends, relatives, prospective members welcome. Seven fish limit. Pay 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Big Fish. Entry is $50 for each team. $20 big fish option ( optional ). No age limitation. Pay at the meeting on December 2. $10 late fee if paid at the ramp. Guest at previous meetings are eligible to participate as if they were members.

Tournament Schedule: The remaining toumaments are; December 11 Turkey Shoot. Possibly a Turkey Shoot in January.

Club Treasury: We usually spend about $150 on the banquet for plaques and so on. That will probably be used for Top Six ( June at Clear Lake ).

Many people think that we are a non profit organization. Legally, we are not. The club bank account is under the Social Security number of the treasurer. We have never applied for any tax exempt status. We are just a club.

For Sale: Ted Leslie is selling his 18ft Stratos with 150hp Envinrude engine, 6" jack plate, hot foot throttle, 75lbs thrust MinnKota Maxxum trolling motor, 3 depth finders (Lowrance X75, Eagle, indash Humminbird flasher), 4 new batteries, rod saver fishing rod tie downs, folding boat ladder, hand rails on the port and starboard, white with blue trim, boat cover. $5,500. October meeting: No excitement. We did pick the Delta for our November 6 toumament.

Both Jeff Wilson and Jeff Haskins joined the club. WELCOME!

Get ready. Next month I'II start to bug you all about your year 2000 membership. BASS expects to receive the 2000 membership list in December. They never get it, but we should get a few names in just to remain active.

At the next meeting we should discuss and possibly vote on the club dues for 2000. It's possible that we will not want to remain with BBAC.

The two proposals for rule changes were discussed at the meeting. Because of the small turnout it was agreed that we would vote at the November or December rules meeting.

The club voted to have a "Turkey Shoot" tournament in November or December. Club members will be asked to fish with someone who is not a current member of the Gilroy Bassmasters who might be a prospective member. It will be a team tournament. Each boat must have at least one club member, boater or non boater. We will vote on a date at the October meeting.

Bill Zeigler will look into the possibility of the club doing a community service project such as cleaning up a local creek. Several members indicated that they would be willing to participate.

Editorial: I will not be at the meeting, so I'll voice my opinion here.

The bass club has been good to us. We have made a lot of good friends and spent hundreds of hours on the water with them. It doesn't get much better than that. In a few years many of us will look back on these as the best years of our lives and remember the good times. We may regret only that we did not spend more time on the water. We won't remember the fights. It's a good thing. Let's keep it going. Ignore the crap and focus on what is really important. Please. Let's go fishing!

Tournament results - Lake Oroville, September 18 &19, 1999

Club Treasury: In September we ordered 5 plaques for members that finished in the money and were awarded a plate. At $30 each that put a dent in the treasury.

Other: Dave Glover and Chuck Peak finished in fifth place in the ABA Delta Region. They will be fishing in the American Bass North Team Classic Fishoff at Lake Don Pedro this week. They will miss the club meeting but will both be fishing the October tournament at lake Nacimiento. Wish us luck!

For Sale: Mark Eglesia has his 1986 Ranger 375V with a Yamaha 150 for sale. It has 2 depth finders, a Lowrance X16 and a Humminbird Side Finder. The trolling motor is a Mercury Thruster 45 pound thrust Motorguide. On board battery charger. It's a good boat and is being offered to club members at a bargain price of $8000 or offer. If you are not interested, spread the word to your friends. It does catch fish! Call Mark at (408) 448-3106 for details.

August meeting: This newsletter is being mailed a week early. The author has to spend a week trout fishing in the Sierras. Poor me.

Two proposals for rule changes were made at the meeting. We will vote on both proposals at the September meeting.
The proposals were:

1. Allow a member to bdng a prospective member to a bass club meeting and then to fish with the prospective member in one tournament.
The idea is to help in recruiting new members.

a. The member and the prospective member will not be included in the draw and would launch last.

b. The prospective member must be a minimum of 16 years old. The BASS age limit is 16.

c. Member non boaters have pdority and can not be bumped by a guest or prospective member. The number of member non-boaters must
be less than the number of boaters before any non member will be allowed to fish.

d. Only one tournament can ever be fished as a prospective member. That person could fish a later tournaments as a guest.

e. A club member can bring two prospective member each year.

2. Allow a club member to bring a family member to one tournament once each year. The club member and the family member would not be
included in the draw and would launch last. The family member could be under 16 years old. All of the rules that apply to a prospective
member, except age, apply.

Chuck Peak checked with B.A.S.S. to see a guest under age 16 would invalidate our insurance. The answer is that the club would be
covered by the $1,000,000 liability insurance but than anyone not on the club roster with B.A.S.S. would not be covered. B.A.S.S. said that
it would be a good idea to have a parent sign a release for the person under 16.

April meeting: There was discussion about the possibility of purchasing a new scale. At the next meeting we will have information on prices and options such as a refurbished scale, i may even have an extra scale in my live well.

In all future toumaments we will use whatever weight the scale reads. We will no longer add or subtract the number that the scale reads with only the empty basket. Normally it is in the hundredths of a pound and almost never makes a difference. After a bit of discussion, the club voted in the new procedure.

Jon Maynard announced that all tournaments will end at 3:00 PM unless announced otherwise at the meeting. If you don't hear the official time, weigh in time, off limits, or any other information announced just before Blast Off, ask. It's your responsibility to know.

We have one new member this month. Welcome to the club Jim Bookwalter!

Make your Clear Lake reservations early, for Top Six on April 17, the club two day tournament April 10-11, and the nite tournament July 24. I am reserving Henderson point.

We have three new member and one returning members paid their dues for 1999. Welcome to the club Ted Leslie, Billy Patterson, and John Lake!

After this issue of the newsletter, I'll remove non-members from the mailing list. Guests at a meeting will receive a copy for two months.

Each year we ask members to donate for the club raffles. If you have anything to donate, new or used but in good condition, please bring it to the next meeting. All of us have tackle that we will never use, but that might be useful to someone else. Make room for the new stuff!

Tournament results - Delta, Holland Riverside, Februrary 6, 1999

Club Treasury: The club has approximately $570. Recent expenditures included; $1080 Top Six, $250 B.B.A.C., $92 Weigh In Slips, $174 awards presented at the banquet, $288 B.A.S.S. Federation membership and insurance, $25 California BASS Federation Chapter, and $37 DFG annual tournament permit. We can expect to earn about $200 from raffles, $180 from new members, and to spend about $200 on miscellaneous expenses. We make nothing from toumaments( 100% payback ) and in fact have a loss if we refund money after a tournament is over. We can expect to end 1999 with approximately $750.

January meeting:
The club selected the tournament dates for 1999, the lake for February and the lakes for the two day tournaments. Again this year, the Delta will be our fall back lake for all tournaments.

At the February meeting, we will have the final vote on joining B.B.A.C.. If we have our money in the mail by the Friday after the meeting we will have a club profile published in the next issue of the B.B.A.C. newsletter.

Please have your $30 Top Six entry fee in at the next meeting.

We have a total of 20 members paid up. There are two new members, Steve Yee and Ryan Calamia. Welcome!

If you plan to fish the February tournament and have not joined the club for 1999 please send a check for $58 to Chuck Peak ASAP. The February tournament is only two days after the club meeting and there will not be enough time after the meeting to get your membership in to B.A.S.S. and you will not have insurance coverage!

If you have recently fished the local lakes or have done well in a tournament please share that information at club meetings. We are our own best source of current fishing conditions.

Banquet:
The Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, January 16, 1999 at the El Capri Restaurant. The food and service were both very good. It was a good banquet. We had a D.J. this year and even got a little dancing in. You might be a redneck if you dance in boots and a baseball hat.

We owe a special thanks to Bill Zeigler. Bill made all of the banquet arrangements and even paid for the D.J.. Bill and his wife Silvia also donated a complete aquarium setup for the raffle. Thank you Bill! Thank you Silvia! El Presidente for life!

The Raffle was a great success! Darrell said so! It took him at least two trips to carry off his prizes. There were some fantastic prizes. They included:
a Castaway rod ( Dennis Steinbach ),
a complete Aquarium setup ( Bill and Silvia Zeigler at The Pet Stop ),
a large assortment of bass tackle ( Denise at Coyote Bait and Tackle ),
more bass tackle ( Ly's Sporting Goods ),
several gallons of Quicksilver oil ( Wayne at B & P Marine ),
free dinners ( El Capri ),
a check (The Groomery from Darrell and Lannie Allen ),
and items donated by club members.

Thank you all!

I have listed the addresses of the businesses that donated to the club raffle at the end of the newsletter. Take a look and consider the possibility of dropping in to see what theyhave to offer. Coyote offers a discount to club members and has been our unofficial sponsor for a long time. Wayne at B & P is a great mechanic and they have bulk oil if you bring your own container. The Pet Stop in Gilroy has everything but bass. Live bait? I did not even know that Ly's Sporting And Fishing Goods existed but will stop in and see what they have. Jon Maynard speaks highly of them. The El Capri always has good Mexican food and they put up with our club meetings every month. Dennis Steinbach is a tackle distributor so we will have to rely on Darrell to say thanks for the Castaway Rod and other prizes. The Groomery does dogs, cats, and rumor has it bass fishermen. Darrell looks pretty good.

If I missed anyone please let me know so that I can include a thanks in the next newsletter.

Awards:
Angler of the year - Mike Schley ( 77.93 pounds )
Bassmaster of the year - Chuck Peak ( 309 points )
Big Fish - Bill Lee ( 10.03 pounds)
Most Improved - Bill Lee
1997 Officers - Plate to each 1997 officer
On time sometimes - Mark Eglesia and Ed Binschus

Next Tournament: February 6 at The Delta. Launch at Holland Tract. On the water by 6:00 AM.

Next Meeting: The first Thursday of the month, February 4, 1998 at 7:30 PM. El Capri, Morgan Hill. Corner of Monterey and Cochrane Road. This is just two days before the tournament.

Top Six: Top Six will be at Clear Lake on Saturday, April 17 and we will be participating. The format is different this year. Teams consist of three boats and the entry fee has been increased to $90. The club will cover $60 for each participant, so each participant will have to pay $30, due at the February 4 meeting.

Mike Schley is organizing Top Six for the club. Any questions, call Mike Schley at (510) 490-8436. Mike has organized the two teams as:

            Boater   Non-Boater
Team #1   Mike Schley        Eddie King
                 Mark Eglesia        Robert Ramirez
                 Bill Zeigler            John Maynard

Team #2   Gary Cromp        Darrell Allen
                 Chuck Peak         Dave Glover
                 Bill Lee                Bob Greneveld

The 12 participants will split all winnings evenly. For example, if team 1 is in the money and team 2 has big fish then all of the winnings will be pooled and the total divided by 12. This includes Team Weight, Individual Weight, and Big Fish. The only exception will be the trophy for big fish that can't be split so it will go to the person that caught the fish.

It has been suggested that we have a side bet between out two teams. The team with the lowest weight buys dinner for the other team.

Club treasury: The club will have approximately $1200 in our account on February 1, 1998. This is not counting the $720 that has been reserved for Top Six.

Tournament Schedule: February 6 Delta, March 13, April 10 and 11 Clear Lake, April 17 Top Six Clear Lake, May 15, June 12, July 17 nite at Clear Lake, August 14, September 18 and 19 Oroville, October 16, November 6. Lakes for most tournaments will be selected at the club meeting the month before. The date for the July nite tournament may be changed depending on when the full moon is. We will vote at the next meeting.

The club elected the new officers for 1999 and decided on the banquet and Top Six. The club dues were raised to $58 so that we will have money available for B.B.A.C. membership. We will not join until $250, 25 members paid up.

Banquet: The Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 16, 1998 at the El Capri Restaurant. Drinks and dancing at 6:00 PM and dinner starting at 7:00 PM. Dinners are about $14.00. You will be able to pick from a selection. Children are welcome. Non members are also welcome.

We will have a DJ this year. Dancing from 6:00 PM until dinner then music until the awards presentations and raffle at 8:00 PM.

Each member should bring something worth at least $10 for the Raffle. We will also have items that have been donated by local Tackle shops.

Next Tournament: Location and date to be decided at the next meeting.

Next Meeting: The second Thursday of the month, January 7, 1999 at 7:30 PM. El Capri, Morgan Hill. Corner of Monterey and Cochrane Road. We will be selecting the tournament dates for 1999. We will also be selecting the lake for February. It will be an important meeting.

A lot of us have friends that fish. Bring-um to a meeting! It's nice to belong to a small club, but some of our tournaments have just been too small.

Top Six: We will be fishing Top Six this year. The club will pick up the tab for the top six teams to a limit of $720. Members fishing Top Six may have to pay up to $30. Top Six will be organized differently this year but it will be at Clear Lake again. We have not received any official information on how it will be organized.

Mike Schley will coordinate Top Six this year. We will mail in our registration on February 25 so that we can get a good launch position.

    Vice President: Eddie King
    Secretary: Chuck Peak
    Treasurer: Chuck Peak

Many thanks to last years officers!

If you have not paid your dues and insurance please do so at the next meeting or mail a check to Chuck Peak. We have to get our insurance in before the first tournament. The total dues are $58. Of that $36 goes to the club and $12 to the B.A.S.S. Federation and $10 to B.B.A.C..

When we send in your $12 to the federation you will also receive B.A.S.S. Times free. All in all, it's not such a bad deal.
