Västerås
in
Västmanlands
was
our
next
stop.
We
came
here
to
visit
the
Västerås
Cathedral
which
is
called
Domkykran.
Domkyrkan
is a
13th-century
cathedral
adorned
with
many
zigzags
and
lancets.
The
interior
is
probably
the
most
beautiful
cathedral
we have
ever
seen.
A
free-standing
baptismal
chapel,
made
of
oak,
is a
ten-sided
enclosure
created
in
1622.
The
oak
and
gilded
main
altarpiece
portrays
the
Passion
and
the
Resurrection,
and
was
created
in
1516
There
were
several
sculptures,
with
the
majority
of
then
being
created
as
memorials
dating
back
to
1709.
The
statue
outside
the
church
is
Johannes
Rudbeckius,
Bishop
of
Västerås
1619-1646.
It is
the
work
of
Carl
Milles
in
1923.
Our
great-grandparents,
Karl
and
Mathilda
Sätterstrom
were
married
in
this magnificent
cathedral
in
1875.
Our
maternal
grandfather
was
born
in
Västerås
in
1881,
and a
few
years
later
the
family
immigrated
to
America,
settling
in
Dakota
Territory.
After
our
visit,
we
stopped
to get
something
to
eat,
gas up
the
car
and
move
on to
our
next
stop.
