Dr. Steve Steele has applied sociologys concepts and tools for over two decades. As a teacher, practitioner and leader, he has been an advocate for understanding the practical value of the application of social science. He served as President of the Society for Applied Sociology in 1992-93. In 1994 he was elected Chair-elect of the Sociological Practice Section of the American Sociological Association, serving as Chair in 1995-96. Steve served as Society for Applied Sociology Executive Officer for two years shortly thereafter, maintaining the Executive Office at Anne Arundel Community College. He was awarded the Alex Boros Award for contributions to the field shortly thereafter. As Director of the Center for the Study of Local Issues (CSLI) in the 1980s, he worked locally to enhance the problem-solving value of sociology, and nationally to promote the applied research center as a vehicle for local research. In the mid-1980s, CSLI and the American Sociological Association, co-sponsored three national workshops on starting local research centers. These successful workshops, augmented by numerous on-site presentations throughout the United States, drew national and international attention to the practice of what social scientists do. This solution-centered approach to sociology is further reflected in his recent book, aptly titled Solution-Centered Sociology: Addressing Problems Through Applied Sociology (Sage Publications, 1999). In parallel and supportive activities Steve and his wife, Cindy Steele, run Applied Data Associates, Inc., a small research and consulting partnership. For three decades he has maintained a commitment to college teaching and students at Anne Arundel Community College, Maryland USA. At the community college he brings the first two years of college level sociology to the students served by Anne Arundel Community College. Over the last decade he has extended his teaching efforts to the graduate education level in School of Professional Studies in Business and Education at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. He routinely teaches the graduate level core research Quantitative and Qualitative Tools in Evaluation course. Recently he has created and offered Applied Sociology in Organizational Development and Human Resources at JHU.
