What an interesting greeting he had been given since coming aboard. After having to explain to several people that his name as "Alion", and not "Avion", he'd been forced to come up with a way to combat Dalridian technology. Before he'd come aboard, he hadn't even *heard* of the Dalridians! First, Alion had encountered the pompous Commander Bertoli. On the few shifts off that "V" had, the young Deltan had overheard the crew speaking down on their temporary commanding officer. Aparently, the crew was developing deeper and deeper contempt for the man. However, when the Commander brought his gung- ho presence into engineering, Alion had almost chuckled out loud. He found serious types to be funny, although he would not let on. After being fascinated by the attention given to him by female crew members, and their sheer lack of discipline, V had his encounter with the Captain. Shortly after that experience, he'd been asked to draw up a few proposals to use against the Dalridians for Commander Bochu. And now, here he was, finaly bringing his first real creations into the fleet to life. Not actual life he thought, but a life none the less. Seeing his work nearing completion, and the CONSTELLATION heading for SB OMEGA, he began to go down the final checklist. "Gravity well generator?", he called. "Attached to the deflector", retored Ensign Huong Lee, an assistant engineer. "However, you know that it'll take a big chunk out of our power systems, unless it's used in coordination with the one that Chief O'Leary put in on the JPJ." "Yes...anything else?" nodded Alion. Chief Thomas O'Leary was the Chief of the boat onboard the JOHN PAUL JONES. A former engineer, O'Leary had been very helpful in the design of the actual weapon. Quickly attached by SRVs, Alion hoped it would hold. He also prayed that the John Paul Jones would last long enough to impliment the weapons. "Next?", he asked. "The 'correctly equiped' gravity torpedoes are near completion. Unfortunatly, we won't be able to test them." Alion looked around to see who stated that, and he realized that it was his sarcastic First Assistnat, Ensign Susan Reena. However, Alion liked the tone she used to mimic what she had heard of Kzar's earlier statements. Alion was not particularly fond of constant interuption, and through the retelling of one simple story he had now gained his first aquantince outside of the job. He smiled. "Excellent. The targetting systems?" "I was able to keep most of the guidance systems in, according to your schematics. The charge is enough to plaster one of their smaller vessels, and a few of these things should break one of the big guys." The woman's tone was surpising, but Alion nodded to his friend quietly. "Alright, the charge is set. The gravity distortion devices are implanted?" "Implanted, and they seem effective from the few tests perfomed. Even if we inderdict a gravity well, they should be able to function normally. However, with the sheer static pull from a hyperspace jump, if one of these gets caught in the wake, it'll have it's navigation systems knocked offline, and it's engines will need to be re-initialzed and guided manually.", she concluded. Alion frowned, but after all, what were the chances of that happening? The Dalridians wouldn't use ships just to throw off one particular weapon.. "What about the Sun-Scheme?", Alion quieried, reading the last item off of the PADD which contained his brainchildren. "Well, your equations workout, any Dalridian ship would be pulled into a star, and if they tried a hyper jump, they'll be pulled in faster.", engineering's resident mathamatician and matienence chief Petty Officer-2nd Arn Elerion, an El Aurian, stated. "Excellent. The radation abrasive plating?" "We reinforced the hull to specifications. We should be able to hold out near a star long enough for a Dalridian to be pulled in. The bigger, the better. Smallers vessels exert less pull, and will take longer to burn up. We can't afford to risk taking that tactic on a frigate more then once.", the mathamatician finsihed. Alion nodded yet again. "So, we've a gravity well emitter, graviton torpedoes, radation ablasive hull padding incase we should draw one of them into a star... Will the radiation interfear with out sensors?" "It's been known to do that", frowned Reena. There was silence in the Chief Engineer's office for a moment, but only a moment. "Actually, I worked on ECM/ECCM sensors in my junior year", stated Alion. He began to feel another idea coming on. "Perhaps, if we set the bandwith of our short range sensors to operate on the lowest possible frequency, and our long range sensors on the highest ban frequency, the radiation would break up less of the signal." "Excellent!" chimed the young Asian Ensign Huong. "Can we make the modification to the torpedoes, to prevent the manual operation clause?", asked Alion. "I'm afraid not", answered the El Aurion. Elerion had been called upon to replace Ensign Jim Berry, who recently, on his promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade, embarked upon his mission as the new Chief Engineer for the USS JAMES COOK of DesRon 48. "There just isn't time to run tests, draw a layout... I'm not even sure if the sensor packets on the torps can get changed.", he finished. Alion frowned yet again. "Alright, we'll make do. You've done excellent work, dismissed." The three officers quickly filed out, El Aurian, followed by Asian, followed by the woman, who exited the room giving Alion a glance as she walked through the doors. V almost swore that she had winked, but he couldn't have been sure. Being satisfied with the modifications made to the ship, V went about finalizing the work. Although there was a small chance for the torpedoes to malfunction, what ship would hyperspace in by a sun? He didn't believe the Dalridians to be suicidal. No, these modifications were excellent, for his first time, and in such a short time. Being pleased with his work, V took a seat in his chair, and took a load off for perhaps his first twenty seconds aboard CONSTELLATION. Tapping his compin, he sent the data packet to the officers of Commanders Bochu and Bertoli, and Captain Demis. Fatigue finaly setting in, V decided to spend the final two hours before the ship's arrival in his quarters, hopefully sleeping. He couldn't recall doing that for more then fifteen minutes in his very short tenure aboard. He hoped that no-one would disturb him... **************************************** FMD 7.8995 Alion debriefs the Engineering Staff Chris ***************************************** Respectfully Submitted; ENS Vercheck Alion, CEO USS CONSTELLATION (NCC-1017-F) ***************************************** Christopher R.
