It was like a vivid dream, but then she realized that the voice was familiar. It was her Sum-Doc. She hadn't heard from him in several weeks: ever since she transferred to Dante. The Insertion had happened on Stardate 81028. It had been traumatic for Ariana, but she had quickly learned to deal with having an intelligent entity sharing a small corner of her mind. The hypothalamus was a perfect home for the Sum-Doc, and he was much happier in Ariana's mind than in his previous Traqquidian host. So much happier, that he could while away his time observing all that she observed without comment. Since he didn't take up any physical space, the doctor aboard the CONSTELLATION had coined the term "psychothalamus" to describe the Sum-Doc's location. It had been worth a paper published in the Starfleet medical journal, and Doctor LeBeau had mentioned it to Ariana at her first physical aboard ALIGHIERI. She had played it down; her Sum-Doc had been so quiet. The truth was that Ariana enjoyed the verbal sparring that they had done in their early relationship. She could be having a full-fledged argument with her Sum-Doc in the middle of an Operations meeting aboard the CONSTELLATION. *Run to Docking Pylon 2. Someone needs your help.* Ariana, who slept naked, almost ran out the door without pulling on her uniform; she was so galvanized by her Sum-Doc's frantic summons. Tearing down the corridor to the turbolift, she saw the red-alert lamps flashing. The Dalriadan invasion had escalated since the end of her shift. Yssar was taking this sleeping thing too seriously. Battlestations meant everyone! Why hadn't he informed her? *You had worked 28 hours straight before that,* her Sum-Doc reminded her. Now that he was back, he was just as annoying as ever. Did she really miss him? At the end of the corridor to the docking pylon a teenage girl was curled up clutching a teddy bear. A shuttle had left without her! Who would bring their child to a warzone anyway? Having no children, Ariana really couldn't answer that. "Come on. We need to get you away from the outer hull. We're under attack!" Ariana said, hustling the girl into the nearest turbolift. As the doors were closing, Ariana looked out through the diminishing space between and saw the lights dim as the station rocked slightly. She virtually felt a wave of radiation lance through the crack in the door and sear into her body. As she collapsed, the turbolift sped towards the sickbay deck, the teenage girl screaming from her own radiation burns and the horrible sight of Ariana's bubbling skin. The girl knew enough to keep screaming. Doctor LeBeau and his staff heard her as soon as the turbolift doors reopened. <<>> I hope this is a quick treat for the ex-crewmates of Basek Ariana on the CONSTELLATION (remember the Constructor mission?). It also sets up a plotline for Ariana. Tim: Don't let her die, bud. This will change Ariana's life, but she should be back as beautiful as ever.
