Some thoughts were racing through his mind. Certainly a devoted Starfleet officer. Perhaps a little misguided. His communication with Tao just a few minutes ago had raised some thoughts in his mind and was no doubt the person that Saevok had referred to for counseling. He would be careful not to break that trust. A hard thing for a Vulcan to give. He was just going to have to push this Vulcan into in the fire so to speak. Yssar hesitated before replying. <<>> "Do you think an officer in Starfleet should be able to make decisions independently... using good judgement?" Yssar asked. Saevok nodded. "It is imperative, sir. Following lawful orders without question is also imperative." Then he saw the direction Yssar's question pointed and tried to steel himself for the next one. "You say, 'others chose' your profession for you upon entering Starfleet," Yssar stood and loomed over the Vulcan officer. "Have you since acquired the ability to choose for yourself what is best for your career?" Saevok nodded almost imperceptibly. "I have, sir." "And you feel a move to the Science department, which you have already shown aptitude for, would be more beneficial to the station... and to your own personal fulfillment?" Yssar could sense a smile forming on the inside of the jaygee's face. "Aye, sir." Yssar patted Saevok on the back, a gesture which the stoic Vulcan had come to accept from the big felinoid. "There is no time like the present, Mister Saevok -- Pon Farr or no Pon Farr. I happen to have a new officer arriving by D-Shuttle tomorrow. He's got lots of security experience and could fill your vacated position very nicely. We're getting a new Operations officer as well. "So, as of 0600 tomorrow morning you will take charge of the Sciences section, and arrange a proper assistant science officer position for Ensign Larrimer. She has done excellent work in that department and I expect you to heed her advice, since she will likely know just as much as you about your new department." Saevok saluted and walked out of the meeting, refreshed and revitalized. His life was coming together. Now he just had to deal with his Pon Farr. FMD 6.1530 Tao sat with Greyclaw and went over the extensive list of items on his PADD. They were planning the smooth return of civilians, poring over intelligence reports from the contacts they had finally managed to secure within the Huladian population, and generally running the base. "This Kythan fellow has not been very active lately," Yssar commented. "You can check with Ariana when she gets out of sickbay, but Ethan has told me that Kythan is planning a large gathering at the end of this lunar cycle." Tao checked his PADD for the information his young charge had given him. "The Flow and the Way," Yssar muttered. "Sir?" "The precepts the Huladians live by. The Way is basically their code of conduct, their moral and ethical framework. But the Flow was once a mythical power base held only by the clan elders and priests. Kythan brought the Flow to the common Huladians." "It is their collective psionic power that I have heard about?" Tao asked. He had also sensed the power himself when he had been in Kythan's presence. Yssar nodded. "They 'commune in the Flow' to channel their mental energies through a chosen one... Kythan's friend Urgoth was the one when Ariana was there." Yssar tried to remember all that Ariana had told him. "It is apparently not a pleasant experience for the chosen one. On the other hand, Ariana suspects that Urgoth was acting as the instrument of some opposing force... something that counteracts the Flow." "Checks and balances." "Right. But the Flow is still a potent force... Kythan managed to hold off the Kraggon forces for weeks with the paired illusion of a distant invasion requiring their fleet, and a plague on the ground which had the forces on Hulad hiding in fear." "It's not something we've had much time to investigate... perhaps that's a job for our new Chief Science Officer." "Well, he should be continuing your work with mythral, and getting a better feel for the Flow would be a beneficial sideline. You can mention it to him. I told him he starts at 0600 tomorrow morning. I want us to break the news to Ensign Larrimer very carefully. This in no way reflects on her performance... It's just that Saevok outranks her and has more away team experience... something we're going to be counting on when we secure the system a little better." "I concur, sir," Tao smiled. They had already discussed the personnel shuffles at some length. FMD 7.0935 Scene: Command Center The large Klingon officer in his gold-flashed uniform stepped off the turbolift and immediately spotted the station CO. The Caitian Commander had unusual auburn fur and, as he spoke, displayed very human gestures. Another one who had sold out his race, K'Aft thought for a moment. "Lieutenant K'Aft reporting for duty," the Klingon rumbled in front of the CO. "You are interested in honor, right Mister K'Aft?" Yssar said without looking up. Thrown for a moment by the unusual greeting, K'Aft hesitated. "Not quick enough, Mister K'Aft." Slightly angered, K'Aft stood even more stiffly. "Honor is a warrior's lifeblood, sir. Without it, you are walking dead." Yssar looked into K'Aft's eyes. "You will start to temper that attitude instantly aboard my station, Mister K'Aft. Security aboard this station... even in the warzone that it is... will be conducted with an even hand, recognizing that sometimes compromise is the best way to preserve life, liberty, and happiness for all." K'Aft had always been able to find honor by following all Starfleet regulations. Was his new CO suggesting bending rules to accommodate criminals? Or was he just displaying typical Caitian weakness? The Caitians were nothing compared to Kzinti warriors. K'Aft remained silent, but then saw that the CO was expecting some kind of reply, even though he had not asked a direct question. <<>> Brian: I hope I read into your character the right hints. His Klingon attitude will likely clash with Yssar's counseling background. WELCOME ABOARD! Eric: I also hope I covered Saevok's reassignment okay. Mike N.: Have a great time away... just let me know if you want me to write the "meanwhile down on the surface" post that Mike G. requested. Or we could do a joint one. Conor: Can you send me the retconned reporting post for Pike? Nobody I checked with seems to know what you're talking about. We want you aboard as soon as possible!
