It was a touching scene, and Greyclaw wiggled his nose to hold back his emotions. Yssar tried not to watch as Tao layed his hands on his friend, knowing that even Tao's powerful mysticism could not save Heath now. Besides, Greyclaw had his own close friend to attend to. And that's what she had become, wasn't it? Yssar surprised himself as his emotions swept even more powerfully over him as he saw Ariana lying on her own biobed, with a radiation burn unit attached. The once beautiful Bajoran face was bubbled and crisped into an horrific mask, making a mockery of the radiance that was once there. Ariana looked weakly up at Greyclaw. She could not smile because of the burns, but Yssar noticed that she was not weak at all: her strength sparkled through in her eyes. "The doctor tells me you're going to be fine, Ariana," Greyclaw rumbled soothingly. "I think so." Sibilants were possible for her to form, but Yssar knew she would have trouble with Ps and Bs sicne her lips were so hardened. "You know so, Commander." He wanted to care for her and lick her as if she were a mewling, but he knew his rough tongue would cause her pain. Besides, in human terms, that was inappropriate commanding officer behavior. "My Sum-Doc lets me know too." Yssar had heard her mention this strange entity. But she had always joked about him as if he was an annoyance. Now, in her time of need, Yssar was glad this Sum-Doc, whatever it was, could provide moral support. Tao came over after a while and sat with them. "Is he..." Yssar started. "Yes, Commander. Ryan has gone on." Tao wiped at his face once more, then concentrated on Ariana. He felt a stronger presence from her than he ever had before. Apart from the horrific radiation burns, which would heal in time, something about her had changed fundamentally. FMD 6.0630 Scene: Command Center "Good morning, Commander," Tao greeted Yssar as he stepped off the turbolift. The two of them had shared sleeping shifts in pockets of three hours over the night. "Lieutenant Saevok reports that his teams are ready for any possible boarding attempt, although a company of marines would be appreciated. And Lieutenant Roebuck's teams have kept up with repairs overnight. We are back to 75 percent operations. All shields are fully back online." "Any movement in the Dalriadan fleet?" "Not at all, sir. They are still hanging back where their supply ship was destroyed. They've launched a few waves of missiles, but none have reached the station. The Phalanx system has been very effective on its maiden run. Whatever few missiles got through the minefield, were taken out by our point defenses, or the YORKTOWN and the Franklins from Batron 2." Tao ran his finger down a list on his PADD. His memory was superb, but his mind had been flung in many different directions and he was operating on a poor sleep schedule. "That's it sir." "Okay, Tao... get some more rest. The red alert klaxons are enabled for your quarters so you won't miss anything." At that moment flash traffic arrived from OMEGA, and the Communications Officer brought a PADD. "Sir, orders from OMEGA." Yssar nodded thanks to the Comm Ensign and read the PADD. Before he finished, he started chuckling. "What is it, Commander," Tao asked, wanting to share the joke. "Well, Admiral Brooks' office is a little overwhelmed by this war. They sent us a CSO and an OPS officer." "But we already have a CSO... it was a Science officer we wanted." Greyclaw chuckled again. "That's right, Tao. But I'm not going to send anyone away, are you?" Tao grinned. "No, sir. We'll find a place for..." -- he looked on the PADD Greyclaw was holding -- "Mr. K'Ath." "I think he shouldn't be too disappointed with Assistant Security Officer. And ask Ensign Larrimer if she could step up to the Science position for now... you and Ryan (rest his soul) had given her glowing review in the past." Tao saluted. The memories of Ryan Heath swept throuh his mind once again, and he dared not speak. <<>> Just a quick set up for the impending arrival of a new CSO and OPS officer. All will become clear soon.
