He was going to lose lives that was for sure. The enemy fleet was numerical superior to what the federation had in the Dante system. The only question that remained was this. Would the Yorktown inflict some losses to the enemy fleet? It was not an easy thing to go into a battle knowing some of your crewmembers would die in the next few hours. The Yorktown had been able to complete repairs in record time. In fact she was almost 100% operational. The Yorktown had been loaded fully with all the operational probes she could handle. The Yorktown would now in effect become what was known in the 20th Century as a "Light Air Craft Carrier". The Yorktown would resupply the fighters when needed with the probes. The probes themselves were simply redesigned to act as a missile. Basically what the Dalriadan forces were using against SB-ALIGHIERI and the federations forces. With less firepower then the Diaridan counterparts it was hoped they would do enough damage to force the enemy withdrawal from the sector. "Sir were receiving instructions from SB-ALIGHIERI informing us we have clearance to depart, also there wishing us luck" said Ens Johg behind tactical "Inform SB-ALIGHIERI we won't come back empty handed" said Katz with a forced smile. The entire ship was tense it was up to the command staff to show confidence in what appeared as impossible odds for them to win. Captain Katz was going to do his best to insure this. "Lt.Cmdr Gibson status report?"asked Katz to reassure himself the Yorktown was ready "Sir ship is at 85% operationally. I'am informed we can probably push it to 90% but not for long says Ne'telkmar" finished Gibson "Makina, set course for these cordinates," Katz hurried over and handed the tall Bajoran a PADD, "and engage at full impulse. "Aye sir course laid engaging now" said Ens Makina Jalta "ETA?"aksed Gibson "25 minutes sir" said Ens Makina Jalta "Good Lt Johan you have the bridge contact me in 20 minutes Lt.Cmdr Gibson follow me to my ready room" said Katz Scene: Captain Ready Room Captain Katz quickly entered his ready room not bothering to take a seat. Lt.Cmdr Gibson quickly entered the room and waited for his captain to speak "Michael I'm going to keep this short and to the point. In the case that I'm injured or killed I need you to take command of the Yorktown right away. Do not hesitate to do so. The Yorktown could depend on it" said Katz "Well, Captain, ..." "Please, keep this meeting nonformal, Michael, and stick to my first name." "Ok, John. I'll assure you that I'll have a close eye on you, so that won't happen but I'll perform my duties as your XO as good as possible if the need arises to stand in for you. For this special situation I think there won't be any problems with the crew. I think I've been on board long enough to be respected by the crew." said Lt.Cmdr Gibso "Good now that's out of the what are your recommendations on our upcoming battle?" asked Katz "We will have serious problems on engaging the Dalriadan fleet. They don't give us any sign that they will split up if not on serious reasons. So it is most likely that we won't get the chance to take one of their ships by surprise. The best from my point of view is to support the fighters with all the power we have although I have to admit that this is not the way of action I prefer against an enemy." "Michael I want to make this clear I want to inflict as much damage on the Daldrian as possible. I have a personal score to settle with them. "Do you mean the death of the Lexington and Captain Oliva Lee?"Asked Lt.Cmdr Gibson "Yes I do. Comdr. but I will only do so if the Yorktown is safe. I want to try to lead one of the cruisers out of the pack and destroy her." said Katz "However we will remain as far back as possible resupplying the shuttle crafts and launching our own missals. Only if the chance arises do I want to pounce and destroy the cruiser if possible." said Katz "Mr. Makina and I have discussed several flight- and attack-patterns that might give us the chance to hand to succeed as you wish, John. Our chance to take out or seriously damage the cruiser has been estimated by Mr. Johg at 46.6 percent. We will have to run a Kamikaze-like attack against our target. This attack will only succeed if we can take them from the rear. Almost unlikely to happen. All other scenarios will fail and result in destruction of the ship." "Well, Michael. Let me see the patterns." They went through the patterns which included ECM-measures as well as firing-rates and approximation under warp. The discussion went on for another 10 minutes. Katz suggested some alterations to the patterns which proved useful. Finally they chose a pattern which combined the YORKTOWN's action of nearing the enemy-phalanx from behind under warp combined with a fighter-attack. They were interrupted by the intercom. "Captain Katz it's been 20 minutes since you have been in your ready room" came the voice of Lt.Johan "Thank you Lt. Lt.Cmdr Gibson and myself our own our way" said Katz quickly exiting the ready room and entering the bridge. Captain Katz quickly sat down in his command chair and waited for the battle Spread out upon the viewscreen was the now less distant Dalderian fleet. . ...small ships flying ever closer to StarBase Alighieri. The bridge crew watched in silence as they grew ever closer. Sceen: Outside Dante Belt FMD: 5.1500 "Sir we are reaching our destination I've picked up the BELLEROPHON DETROIT and SINGAPORE." said Ens Johg on the Yorktown Finally Katz broke the silence, "Alright, Johan, signal the task force. Were going in." The engines of the hudge starship flared to life. A silent roar filled the void as the Endeavour class ship surged forward toward the fleet. "There," recited Johan, "But for the grace of god, we go." "bljatlh 'e' ylmev" murmured Johg. "Some Klingon Opera?" wondered Alexis. Makina and Johg grinned, glad someone had broken the air of tension. "Power up all phasers and load all photon torpedoes" said Katz "Any word on the status of NC-17 and NC-34?"asked Lt.Cmdr Gibson "Yes sir they are engaging the enemy, and are requesting docking permission to reload missals" said Ens Johg "Give them clearance" said Katz Scene: Battlefield FMD: 5.1520 "Sir the the Dalriadian are opening fir on the BELLEROPHON" said Johg "Her shields are holding for now" finished Johg "Dammit get us in there she can't last that long" said Lt.Cmdr Gibson "Belay that order.." said Katz with a cold voice. Everyone turned to the tactical display that was on the main view screen The Dalriadan ships moved closer to the front lines but careful to stay out of range of BATRON 2. They began to launch missiles toward BATRON 2 and the YORKTOWN. "The BELLEROPHON can defend herself with the aid of VENICE and MOBILE we need to worry about those destroyers launching the missals at ALIGHIERI" Said Katz "Sir we are receiving a message from the commander of the BELLEROPHON asking us the assist against those destroyers" said Johg "Ens Makina get us as close to those destroyers as possible. I believe it's time we tried that simulation to see if it will work" said Katz "Aye sir we have some fighter cover to assists us" said Gibson "Good Ens Makina were going to need your skills manoeuvring the Yorktown for this to work" said Katz ***************** Scene: FMD 15:30 Scene: Front Line ****************** The MARATHON, CONSTANTINOPLE, and VENICE launched their torpedoes at the oncoming missiles. Meanwhile the fighters streaked past the destroyers attacking the other members of BATRON 2 as if they were headed toward the ships farther out. At the last moment, they turned and approached the destroyers from behind, launching their probes at the least shielded area of the Dalriadan ships. At the same time, the YORKTOWN launched some of her probes at the bow of two attacking destroyers. The torpedoes from BATRON 2 exploded within the oncoming missiles, destroying about one-third of them. The remaining missiles streaked past into Dante's belt. Once in the asteroid field, the missiles encountered the unusually strong solar winds from Dante's sun enhanced by the emissions from the modified probes, sending their guidance systems into turmoil. Many of the missiles went off course, impacting on nearby asteroids. Some detonated prematurely, releasing their deadly xray lasers into the asteroid field,destroying some of the probes. Approximately one hundred missiles from the initial two hundred launched miraculously made it through the belt and continued on toward ALIGHIERI. Meanwhile the weapons fired against three destroyers found their marks. The EM pulse on several of the probes successfully punched holes in the weaker part of the Dalriadan shields, delivering their payloads to an unprotected hull. One of the destroyers went up in an expanding fireball, to the shouts of the crews of BATRON 2, the YORKTOWN and the fighters. Two other destroyers suffered severe damage. Captain Sanders ordered her ships to concentrate their fire on the remaining three destroyers, especially the relatively unscathed one, even as their own shields continued to take a pounding. The two damageddestroyers eventually submitted to the pounding from phaser fire and exploded. Scene: USS YORKTOWN FMD:5.1535 "Continue firing on the last destroyer." said Katz concentrating on the last destroyer. "Sir the destroyer is trying to make a run for it" shouted Johg "Concentrate all fire on there engines I want then disabled" said Katz The Yorktown let the Dalriadian destroyer have the full impact of her phasers. The Destroyer weakened shields from the previous engagement could not withstand the volley and her shields collapsed. The phasers of the Yorktown ripped through the engines of the Dalriadian causing them to exploded and stooping the destroyer in mid track. "Sir the Dalriadian engines are gone" said John "Hail them and inform them that they are to power down and prepare to be boarded, otherwise we will destroy the ship" said Katz "Aye sir hailing frequencies are open" said Johg The crippled Dalriadian destroyer was not going to let its missing engines stop it from continuing the attack it angled itself so that it's weapons would be able to strike to Yorktown and prepared to fire. "Sir..."started Johg "I see it ensign open fire" said Katz The Yorktown opened fire on the crippled Dalriadian destroyer ripping through it's weakened structure like a knife cutting through butter. The destroyer had no chance she exploded killing all on board her. "Sir I'm picking up multiply targets coming from the reaming Dalriadian they fired there missals "Get us the hell away from them retreat to the Dante belt on the double fire as many probes as possible against those missals" shouted Katz just as the order came from the BELLEROPHON. The missiles detonated upon reaching 200,000 km, releasing their deadly xray lasers. The invisible beams pelted the four starships as well as the retreating starships, ripping through their already weakened shields. The metaphasic shields provided some protection from the radiation, eliminating what would have been fatal damage to the BELLEROPHON. Unfortunately, the DETROIT and SINGAPORE didn't fare as well. The DETROIT's shields had already been weakened by the destroyers and the xray lasers tore through her, igniting her warp core into a brilliant fireball in space. The SINGAPORE suffered heavy damage and was dead in space, most of her crew killed by the deadly radiation. The MOBILE, whose captain would be branded a coward in the short term but would later come back to greater glory, punched out to warp before the radiation wave hit. Even the BELLEROPHON felt the sting of the missiles as key plasma conduits were fried, shorting out the ship's weapons and long range scanners. The other members of BATRON 2, along with the YORKTOWN, suffered damage from the lasers, but their distance from the impact sight had saved them from serious damage. Still some of the radiation had penetr ated their shields, disrupting systems and killing crew members. The fighters of NC-17 and NC-34 had managed to take cover behind the various asteroids within Dante's belt, only losing two ships to the fatal attack. "Status report" asked Katz as the Yorktown recovered from the missile attack "Sir main systems are still on-line a few back ups were knocked out. shields down to 85% I'm receiving causality reports so far 5 crewmembers confirmed killed." said Gibson with a sigh Scene: USS YORKTOWN SICKBAY FMD: 5.1530 Ens Avalon was assisting the sickbay as much as she could. With the sudden departure of the formed CMO the Yorktown was under staffed. Ens Avalon had done some basic medical courses. So far the situation was not good but not terrible. The CNS of the Yorktown could sense that the ship was tense awaiting the outcome of the battle. Ens Avalon could fell the impulse engines kick in as the Yorktown began to do whatever she was going to do. So far no casualties had arrived to sickbay but Avalon was sure that would change soon. As if to answer her thought the ship was suddenly thrown around like a child toy that a child had thrown away. Ens Avalon tried her best to maintain her balance but she could not and was thrown against one of the sickbays wall. Just as she hit the wall one of the supports collapsed crushing the CNS of the Yorktown Scene: USS YORKTOWN MAIN BRIDGE FMD 15:40 "Sir I've just received reports from sickbay that CNS AVALON was injured during the missile attack. She is in a coma and isn't expected to come out of the coma in sometime" said Gibson "Dam we could use her right now.. Alright we can't do anything about her right now. Ens Makina get us into that Astrid belt now" said Katz fearing the worst As the Yorktown entered the asteroid belt Johg informed the crew that the Dalriadan fleet opened fire with another volley of missals half went to the remaining protecting fleet of the Dante system. The other half went directly for SB-ALIGHIERI. "Johg destroy as many of those torpedoes as possible" was all Katz could say. The Yorktown would destroy as many missiles as possible before they hit ALIGHIERI but there was no way she could destroy all of them >>>> ALL: Post from the Yorktown perspective.
