CINCINDIGO asked. The fleet commander was sitting on the floor at the far end of the room with the rest of the hostages while RADM James Phaser remained sitting at the conference table. Behind Brooks, a large map of the Terebellum system was displayed on a viewscreen, with various blinking lights indicating positions of vessels and other fleet resources. "Shut up, Brooks. I'm thinking," Phaser snapped, breaking his own concentration. "Yeah, a real fine mess you got yourself into here," Martel scoffed. Roxella Royan shot him a nasty glance. "You've got pretty much the entire fleet staff held hostage, you've identified yourself as a Dalriadan informant, you're most likely responsible for providing them with information leading to the deaths of thousands of Federation personnel, you're stuck on a Starbase... I'd say you're screwed," Captain Dieje pointed out. "You can't receive assistance unless someone on the outside knows what's going on," LCOL Sorill suggested. This time, the nasty look came from CINCINDIGO, although the admiral trusted that the Vulcan knew precisely what he was doing. "A clever ploy in negotiations is to rush the other side into a situation they're not prepared to handle... to make them lose control. I've used it myself many times in my diplomatic career. Nice try, however," Phaser explained, waving his weapon at the staff adjutant. In his left hand, he still clutched the explosive device that could vaporize them all if his grip should falter. "I'll make my next move when I'm damn good and ready." While keeping his hostages at bay, James Phaser secretly wondered to himself what his wife would think about what he had done. Would she be disgusted with his lack of loyalty to Star Fleet, or would she be grateful with his attempt to provide for their luxurious retirement? How many deaths had he indeed been responsible for? Did the Dalriada already know the location of the LEXINGTON? Surely he was not their sole source of information. They should have already known that Tabilin was not well-defended. Kraggon informants could have already supplied them with the details on the Dante system. But now none of that mattered... he had been discovered and his new priority was escape. His contact in Dalriadan Intelligence, in exchange for his help, provided Phaser with a few last instructions. ___________________________________________________________________________ FMD : 7.0025 Scene: Corridor Outside the Situation Room, Starbase OMEGA "Okay, I think I've got it. Lower the temperature in the room by several degrees," James Bennett said. LCDR Condor Henderson accessed the environmental controls from the computer panel which ran along the bulkhead in the corridor. "That should do it..." Condor responded, his fingers dancing across the panel. "What have you got?" K'Bronn demanded, addressing Bennett, who wore a set of headphones plugged into some sort of scanning device. "You can listen for yourself, sir... as you move this pointer to various locations within this diagram of the Situation Room, you'll hear different sounds depending on the heat the temperature sensors are picking up. A loud, piercing noise indicates a high-level heat signature. A being. Or a fire, I suppose," Bennett informed the XO, handing the headset and device over to him. K'Bronn donned the gear and shifted the pointer across the Situation Room map displayed on the device. "Sounds like there's a whole group of them by the wall... and one near the table." "You think that's Phaser?" Nuave asked. "We can't tell for sure, but it does look like a hostage situation of some sort," he concluded. "Ensign Finn, what's your status on breaking through that forcefield?" "I can't seem to get through, sir," the engineer replied, fiddling with some circuits inside an open panel next to the door. "But I think I can override the hatch lockout manually. We'd at least be able to see and hear what's going on." "Do it." Ensign Finn spliced a few wires as a few sparks shot out from the circuit board. With a loud click, the door slowly slid open. "Welcome to the party, Commander... it's about time," Phaser called out, noticing that the hatch had been opened. "If you try anything stupid, I release my grip on this bomb and it kills everyone." "Henderson, cancel that tranquilizer gas idea," K'Bronn whispered. ___________________________________________________________________________ FMD : 7.0028 Scene: Officers' Lounge, Starbase OMEGA "Sis?" Lieutenant Wendy Phaser looked up in surprise as her little brother entered the room. "Steve... did they tell you what's going on? About Dad?" "Yes," Ensign Steven Phaser replied. "My department head on the PROMETHEUS, Lieutenant Commander Kyran, briefed me. What the hell's going on? They pulled you off the ZEUS for this?" Wendy stood up to give Steve a quick hug. "I can't believe he sold out the entire fleet, Steve!" she exclaimed in a broken voice, tears welling up in her eyes. After a few moments of silence, Steve replied, "Have you talked to mom about it yet?" "I went with the executive officer of the starbase to inform her. She didn't take it too well," his sister answered, sitting down with Steve at a nearby table. "Steve, they need our help." "Who? What do they want us to do?" "Commander K'Bronn, the base XO, wants to use us against our own father." "What??" Steve asked in total disbelief. "They can't make us do that!" "We're Star Fleet officers, kiddo. Dad's revealed himself to be an enemy of the Federation. I'm afraid it's our duty," she explained. "I'm not turning against my own family!" Steve harshly whispered. Wendy let out a sigh, and then said, "I figured you wouldn't understand... you haven't been wearing that insignia long enough." "Who's all in there with him?" "The fleet commander, some random commodore, the base CO... a lot of top brass. I forget," Wendy answered, looking away. "I wish my old CO were in there... he'd know what to do. He'd really kick some ass," the young Phaser boy pointed out, trying to change the subject for his sister. "You mean Captain Slick? The one you set me up with? I still haven't gotten you back for that, you twerp! I know this nurse aboard the ZEUS..." "Is she cute?" "I think you'd enjoy her tentacles. Anyway, how is ol' Rick Slick?" "His characteristic good luck ran out," Steve responded. "He went down with the AGAMEMNON." "It's probably dad's fault, Steve. This is all probably his fault. People are going to blame our entire family for this... we've got to do something." "What do they want us to do?" "Got a Type I hand phaser on you?" Wendy asked her security officer sibling, who nodded and promptly showed it to her. "Good, set it to stun..." ___________________________________________________________________________ FMD : 7.0030 Scene: Armory, Starbase OMEGA A random security officer entered the Armory, spotting one of his friends strapping on various gear and weapons. As he approached, his friend slipped a few stun grenades and slipped a phaser holster around his waist. "Hey, what are you doing?" "Didn't you hear? INDIGOXO's got the entire fleet staff held hostage in the Situation Room. I'm going on a daring rescue mission!" his friend replied, slipping a small stilleto into his boot. "What... are you crazy? If you screw up, he'll kill them all! And you know what that will leave us with?" "What?" "Admiral Dirkas 'Happy Face' Mirtox, Commander-in-Chief, INDIGO Fleet." There were a few moments of silence as the other officer considered those consequences. "Shit, you're right. Screw it... let's head back to the bar." [[NRPG: Told you that you'd be seeing that one, Mike. ]] ___________________________________________________________________________ FMD : 7.0032 Scene : Situation Room, Starbase OMEGA Theme Music: "Send Me an Angel" by Scorpions "I have some people who'd like to see you, Admiral," K'Bronn addressed the traitor, with a slight smirk. "Dad?" came his daughter's voice from the corridor. Both of his beloved children, Wendy and Steve, soon appeared in the doorway looking at their father in disgust through the protective barrier of the forcefield. The elder Phaser became enraged at Commander K'Bronn for this tactic, which he considered to be below-the-belt. "Wendy... Steve... what are you doing here?" he gasped, still keeping a firm grip on the explosive device and pointing his phaser at CINCINDIGO. "Anyone but them enters this room and you'll be cleaning Brooks off the bulkhead for a week." K'Bronn nodded acknowledgement. "Computer, lower hatch forcefield for five seconds." The field came down and the two Phaser siblings entered the room. "Dad, are you okay?" Steve asked as they both rushed to his side. In the background, the forcefield went back up. INDIGOXO set his phaser down as his daughter approached him with her arms outstretched. "I haven't seen you in such a long time!" Wendy exclaimed while embracing her father, her voice trembling in anticipation of what was about to follow. "I missed you too, precious. I'm sorry for all of this," Phaser said, holding his daughter closely. A tear began to trickle down his cheek. "I'm sorry too, Dad," Wendy explained as she terminated the hug and used both of her hands to press his left hand around the device. "Do it now, Steve!" Steven Phaser fumbled for his hidden sidearm and pointed it at his father, who began wrestling with Wendy for control of the device. "Steve!" Quivering in hesitation, Wendy's younger brother tried to win the internal struggle which was preventing him from firing on his father. "I... I can't. Wendy, I can't!!" Lieutenant Colonel Sorill lept from his sitting position and rushed towards Ensign Phaser, but before he could get there, INDIGOXO had managed to knock his daughter to the floor and grab his phaser which he had previously set down. He set it to stun and spat streams of energy out at the Vulcan, catching him right in the abdomen and forcing him to the deck, twisting awkwardly in the air as the stun beam hit. The next shot caught his son in the chest, causing him to drop his sidearm and crumple to the floor unconscious. Wendy lay on the floor, weeping. "Get them the hell out of here! Wendy, get out of here!" INDIGOXO shouted in rage. "He's losing it," Roxella whispered to CINCINDIGO. "Lieutenant Phaser, remove your brother from this space. Proceed to the officers' lounge and await further instruction," John Brooks calmly ordered. The fleet XO lowered and raised the forcefield as necessary. "I want a shuttlecraft prepared for me and select hostages, along with a security detail escorting us from here to the Shuttle Bay. Bring me my wife, and Captain Brooks," Phaser demanded after his children were out of hearing range. "We'll see what we can do," K'Bronn said, blowing off the request. "Computer, activate forcefields in all exits from the Promenade and deactivate life support for that area," Phaser instructed. <> "The quicker you comply with my demands, the less personnel will freeze to death, Commander." K'Bronn gave some harsh whispers to Nuave and Henderson, and the two officers dashed off immediately. FMD 7.0040 The forcefield lowered momentarily to admit Captain Brooks, son of CINCINDIGO and triple agent against the Dalriada. Phaser did a quick check to ensure that he was unarmed, and herded him over to the rest of the group. "Where's my wife?" asked the informant. Nuave whispered into K'Bronn's ear, who shook his head sadly. "Apparently, after receiving the news from myself and your daughter earlier, she hung herself in your quarters," the base XO relayed. Phaser stood in shock for what seemed to him like hours. "What?" he choked. "She's dead, Jim," Admiral Brooks had nearly said, but then thought about it a bit and decided not to. "Your wife has expired, sir. She took her own life... she could not live with the humilation of your treachery against the Federation," K'Bronn helpfully explained. "You lying bastards!" Phaser shouted. He depressed a switch at the head of the conference table. "James Phaser to Tracy Phaser... Tracy, please respond." After a few moments, he tried again in desperation. "Tracy... respond, dammit!" [[Admiral Phaser, this is Sick-Bay. I regret to inform you that your wife has passed away. Time of death, 0030.]] "NOO!!" Phaser screamed, sitting down at the table and beginning to sob. "Your shuttle is ready, sir," LCDR Henderson reminded from the corridor, giving INDIGOXO no time to grieve. For all he knew, this man was responsible for leading the Dalriada to the LEXINGTON. Condor had no compassion for a traitor. _____________________________________________________________________________ FMD : 7.0042 Scene: Corridor Outside of Situation Room, Starbase OMEGA As the forcefield in the doorway lowered, the security guards stationed in the corridor dropped to a kneeling position and directed their phaser rifles towards the entrance. The first person to step out was CINCINDIGO, with Rear Admiral Phaser close behind, jamming his weapon into the back of the fleet commander's neck and firmly gripping the explosive device in his other hand. Robert Brooks followed. "Escort us to the shuttle bay," Phaser ordered, no longer having the smirk he once had. "The admiral and his son will remain with me as hostages until I am safe," he lied. The commander of INDIGO Fleet and a triple agent against the Dalriada would bring an extremely favorable income to Phaser upon their delivery. Bringing these two individuals into Dalriadan custody were the final instructions given to him by his contact. As the three officers proceeded through the corridors, the rifle-bearing security team positioned themselves three ahead and three behind. When using the turbolifts, which Phaser activated as necessary, two security specialists went ahead of the group, two remained with Phaser and his hostages inside the turbolift, and two followed behind in the next available turbolift car. This procedure was somewhat slow and tedious. Finally, they reached the starbase's main shuttle bay, where a shuttlecraft had been prepped and was standing by for INDIGOXO's use. Dieje and K'Bronn were waiting there. "We have complied with your demands. Restore life support to the Promenade," demanded Captain Dieje, who was no longer required as a hostage. Presumably, Dieje had taken a more direct route to the shuttle bay. "Computer, restore life support to the Promenade, deactivate all forcefields within exits from the Promenade," Phaser called out. "Restore all computer access in fifteen minutes." <> "Let's go... into the shuttle. Dieje, I want runabout escorts to Dalriadan space. No funny business or I swear I'll kill both of them." The CO of the starbase looked at INDIGOXO one last time as he entered the shuttle with the elder and younger Brooks, and then realized this was a man who had just lost his beloved wife, and had proven himself a disgrace to his children. He no longer had any reason to not set that explosive off... Fiendishly submitted, Rear Admiral James Phaser, Traitor Against You Federation Pansies Long Live the Dalriadan Alliance! NRPG: This would have been out sooner, but Norton Utilities thought it'd be more efficient to defragment my hard drive by removing fragments instead of joining them together. I hope I played everyone's characters correctly... I mentioned some events which can be further explored in backposts if you'd like: A) Kyran breaking the news to Ensign Phaser on the PROMETHEUS B) K'Bronn and Wendy talking to Mrs. Phaser C) K'Bronn instructing Wendy on a plan to subdue her father D) Crisis on the Promenade as life support is deactivated and the exits blocked E) Someone discovering Mrs. Phaser's death F) There's a block of time between 2345 and 0025 for any information-gathering anyone wants to do about the hostage situation. You can assume that the NOVA informed the Starbase about INDIGOXO's status... but I can't recall what time that was offhand. Also, any interaction the hostages would like to add would be welcome. :) For Starbase OMEGA, as of FMD 7.0045 the hostage situation is pretty much over. The shuttle will leave the base with Phaser and the two Brooks', heading for Dalriadan space. The next post from me (probably a joint effort with Jeff Jenkins) will conclude my ASR career. ---- Ensign Jeffery D.
